Differences Between The Crucible Play And Movie
The Crucible is a play, and film, set in Massachusetts during February 1692 and May 1693. The play is written by Arthur Miller that portrays a court case, in the village Salem, called The Salem Witch Trials. The film was written after the play, therefore Arthur Miller was able to fill and take away in places that needed, which gives lots of comparison and contrast between them.

In Act I of The Crucible, it starts with the girls gathering up and meeting Tituba in the woods. An example of change from the text to film,would be the setting of Abigail and Proctor’s conversation. In the book, the setting took place in Parris’ home therefore, Betty heard. Whereas in the film, the conversation happened in private outside Parris’ home, which means

    One of the biggest differences between the play and the movie is the dramatization of everything, they show all seances with something that the play could not deliver by itself. One example of this is the opening scene, we see Abby violently swinging around a dead chicken and then smash its neck open, and proceed to drink the blood. This violent display was show in the play to be more calmly done.     The movie The Crucible was made in 1996, its main characters are John Proctor, Elizabeth Proctor, Abigail Williams, Reverend John Hale, and Judge Danforth. Early in the year 1692, in the small Massachusetts village of Salem, a collection of girls fell ill, falling victim to hallucinations and seizures. New England’s Puritans extreme involvement with religion led to the theory that frightening or surprising occurrences were often attributed to the devil or his cohorts. The incomprehensible sickness stimulated fears of witchcraft, and it was not long before the girls, and then many other residents of Salem, began to accuse other villagers of consorting with devils and casting spells. Old grudges and jealousies were exposed in to the open, while the air was getting filled with chaos and hysteria. The Massachusetts government and judicial system, heavily influenced by religion, jumped in to action. Within a few weeks, dozens of people were in jail on charges of witchcraft. By the time the fever had run its course, in late August 1692, nineteen people had been convicted and hanged for witchcraft, as many as thirteen people died in prison, and one person was pressed to death. The facts from the movie seemed accurate, and were somewhat similar to the genuine facts that occurred in this event; although the film did have its distinctions.…
