Outstanding post on differentiate between jail and prison. I think the general population fall in the trap of considering jail and prison as the same thing. Even though they are significant different between the prison and jail, a person should be afforded the same basics rights and privileges allow by the court regardless where they are located.

    Four Types of Prsons

    The four types of prisons are federal, state, municipal, and military. A federal prison is operated and managed by the government. Federal prisons normally house inmates who have been convicted of a crime in violation of a federal statue as opposed to a state or local laws. A municipal prison is a high security prison. A military prison is a prison operated by the military. Military prisons are used to house prisoners of war, enemy combatants, those whose freedom is deemed a national security risk by the military or national authority and member of the military found guilty of a serious crime. A state prison is a facility operated by a state and used to house and rehabilitate criminals. There is both minimum and maximum security prisons which are divided based on the nature of the crime committed by inmates at the institution. A total institution is an enclosed facility separated from society and physically where the inhabitants share all aspects of their daily lives. Total institutions are small societies and evolve their own distinctive values and styles of life and pressure residents to fulfill rigidly prescribed behavioral roles. Some of these places include prisons, concentrated camps, mental hospital, seminaries, and other facilities in which individuals are cut off from society forcibly or willingly. Jails play an important role in the criminal justice system because it keeps offenders that committed a crime off the streets. Jails also help our community to be safe and there would be less violence. Jails are used as a form of punishment either short-term or long-term depending on how severe of the crime. Without jails in the criminal justice system crimes will be overrated and individuals that break the law will receive no punishments and will keep committing the crimes over and over…

    With prison populations growing at an alarming rate and crime rates on the rise, one has to stop and wonder if there will soon be a prison decorating every town or city. America’s prisons have been called the “graduate schools for crime” and with the recidivism rate, one has to agree that this term was not coined flippantly. It stands to reason: Take a group of people, strip them of their possessions and privacy, expose them to constant threats of violence, overcrowd them onto a concrete block as long as a street, deprive them of meaningful work, and the result is an embittered underclass more intent on getting even with society rather than contributing to it. Take out the word “prison” and replace it with inner city and you have just described the lower class. Could it be that we are treating our prisoners and our lower class the same? In the course of my research, and well known to our legislators, Americans pay a great deal to keep this cycle going at the cost that is far greater to society as a whole. Like most of the government solutions today, they are expensive. What our legislators neglect to inform us of is that it costs approximately eighty-thousand dollars to build one cell. Our legislators depend on the voters wanting a quick fix with little question as to the cost over a long term fix that will take patience and tolerance, yet be beneficial in the long run for society as a whole. They hide the fact that crime is the result of a morally negligent government and people making morally wrong decisions, for which they must be held accountable. The response should be a quick response to such behavior is punishment, which may include restitution, community service, stiff fines or in the case of violent offenders, prison.
