What is Atkins Diet? The Atkins Diet is also known as the Atkins Nutritional Approach. It was made by Dr. Atkins, an American cardiologist. Atkins Diet was developed by reducing one’s carbohydrate intake. The body is an engine; carbs are the gas that makes it go. Low carb –Atkins is a modern and science diet based on energy metabolism. The principle of this mode is to cut the total amount of carbohydrates in the body because carbohydrates are the main culprits causing excess fat in the abdominal area and sweets cravings. By implementing Low Carb combination of exercise, the body will burn fat faster, people will win obesity in the shortest time that is most comfortable eating (compared to all the other diets). Proponents of the Atkins diet say that it can prevent or ameliorate many diseases, including high blood pressure, and reducing the risk of heart attack and stroke. Atkins Diet freely allows to eat green vegetables, fruits, potatoes, bread, but still reduce weight. It is critical that the dose and method especially in carbohydrate ratio. Instead of providing protein from animal fat, one move to supplement beneficial fat that is good for health including soy bean, nuts, seeds (e.g. sunflower seeds), fruits and vegetables. Approximately 31% of calories from vegetable protein, 43% from oil / vegetable fat, and 26% from carbs. Previously, the old Atkins brought coffee to the list of things crossed, but now, the new version Atkins encourages to drink coffee because it contains antioxidants, helps burn fat and contributes to weight loss. Atkins diet is an effective way to weight loss, but it usually takes a lot of time for finding the carb in any individual. Like any kind of diets plan, Atkins diet also has four phase to get weight loss. This has to do step by step: Induction, OWL (Ongoing Weight Loss), Pre-Maintenance, Lifetime Maintenance. The Atkins diet has some same goals with the sound diet (ABCMV) as discussed in Chapter 1 of textbook. In text book, the first step of sound diet is adequacy. The process of adequacy is to provide all of the essential nutrients, fiber & energy (calories) in amount sufficient to maintain health. However, in Atkins diet, the purpose of the first one is to kick-start weight loss and the most difficult phase by avoiding some foods such as fruits, breads, and whole grains. In this phase, calorie consumption from carbs limited to 20 grams per day. The amount of carbohydrates is much less than the recommended amount of carbohydrate 300grams per day. This phase could be related to the third phase of sound diet (calorie control). The second phase of Atkins diet known as OWL (Ongoing Weight Loss) is to start to climb the Carb Ladder, slowly adding different foods such as seeds, nuts, melon and more. And then continuing the process of finding one’s personal carb balance as the second phase of sound diet. Unluckily, in two last phase of Atkins, these purpose is not same as sound diet anymore. In pre-maintenance and lifetime maintenance, these goal is approaching to sexy body by raising a daily Net Carb intake and carefully monitoring a weight. Atkins diet’s main purpose is to change the body metabolism so one can burn fat for energy instead of glucose, this state is called ketosis. When one eat foods containing high amounts of carbohydrates such as refined sugar, the body metabolizes it to glucose. The body can only hold a certain amount of glucose. So that it will burn glucose prior to the accumulation of fat in the body. In theory, if someone lose a large amount of carbohydrates absorbed, the body will use more time to burn fat and they will lose weight. Not only Atkins diet change the course of one’s metabolism, but also the theory suggests that eating protein is to help curb appetite.
