Diesel Combustion Lab Report
¬¬¬¬In this lab, we explored the theory of combustion and used it to create and biodiesel. Diesel is a common fuel used to power many large trucks and heavy equipment (such as tractors and backhoes). Diesel fuel is made from crude oil that was formed over millions of years by the decomposition of prehistoric plants and animals. Through the use of an oil well, crude oil is pumped out of the ground and transferred (often by large ocean tankers) to oil distillation units. Crude oil contains widely varying organic chemicals that range in size from small molecules with only 1 carbon atom to very large molecules with more than 20 carbon atoms that can be separated into various fractions (or components) based on the size with a distillation tower. …show more content…
Combustion reaction, is a reaction in which oxygen reacts with another element or compound (generally a hydrocarbon) to produce energyg in the form of heat and light. There are two types of combustion reaction: complete and incomplete combustion reaction. In complete combustion, the reactant burns in oxygen, producing a limited number of products. When a hydrocarbon burns in oxygen, the reaction will primarily yield carbon dioxide and water. Incomplete combustion will occur when there is not enough oxygen to allow the fuel to react completely to produce carbon dioxide and water. It also happens when the combustion is quenched by a heat sink, such as a solid surface or flame trap. In this lab, biodiesel was …show more content…
The heat combustion refers to the amount of heat released when one mole of a substance is completely oxidized or combusted. When combustion takes place, the hydrocarbons present in the fossil fuel creates energy. The heat that is used to burn fossil fuels cause molecules of carbon and hydrogen to react and produce large amount of energy. When biodiesel is combusted, the products are heat, carbon dioxide, ash and water vapor. Hot water vapor, formed as part of the combustion reaction, has quite a bit of energy (compared to cool liquid

(Vegetable oil) + (Alcohol) → (Glycerol) +(Methyl Ester)On the other hand, diesel is made from the petroleum which takes millions of years to form under the earth. Thus, it is a kind of nonrenewable energy source. Same as diesel fuels, biodiesel can generate the engine through combustion process. The cloud point of biodiesel is 13°C whereas the cloud point of diesel fuels is -15°C (Hafman, 2003). Both biodiesel and diesel fuel are liquid in room temperature.…

The purpose of the lab was to determine the ratio of air to acetylene results in complete combustion of acetylene gas. The balanced chemical equation for this experiment was C2H2(g) + O2(g) --> CO2(g)+ H2O(l). Complete combustion is the reaction of an element or compound with oxygen to produce the most common oxides and energy. Complete combustion occurs when the fuel and oxygen combine in exact proportions to completely burn the fuel, which leaves a clean test tube. Incomplete combustion is the reaction of an element or compound with oxygen to produce some oxides with less oxygen than the most common oxides. Incomplete combustion occurs when there is not enough oxygen to react completely, not all fuel is used. This may result in the formation of solid carbon a black residue.…

In this lab, we will measure the heat of combustion, or calorimetry, of a candle and compare the found quantity with known values for other hydrocarbons. The calorific value is the total thermal energy released when a substance goes through complete combustion with oxygen. In order to achieve the purpose of this lab, we must first determine the mass of the tea candle. Then, we will determine our room temperature, measure about 100 mL of chilled water, and then pour the water into the given empty soda can. Afterwards, we will set up the soda can and candle in a stacked-style apparatus - the candle underneath the lifted can. After we have set up the apparatus, we will carefully light the candle and gently stir the water with a stirring rod. We will continuously check the heat of the water with our thermometer in order to make sure the temperature is neither too high or too low. After the water is heated above room temperature as it was below room temperature at the start, we will extinguish the flame…
