Dichotomy In Social Work
Given that Citizen primarily focuses on the dichotomy within the social constructs of gender and race, I structured my piece to focus on similar themes. Although I’ve learned that the intersectionality of race, gender, and class is inevitable and present, I unusually found it difficult to pull up recollections when I experienced discrimination and prejudice. Possibly, I’ve become used to my own skin in a biased world. Through this project, I’ve been able to contemplate my confrontations with racism, sexism, and classism.
A large portion of my project revolves around my parents (especially mom) who were Asian immigrants during a time period less accepting than that of mine. I intended to not only recount past experiences regarding prejudice

“A Class Divided” is a film that everyone should view no matter what race or ethnicity a person might be. Whether we realize it or not, everyone is prone to some form of discrimination or prejudice. Most Americans are not part of the dominant group; therefore, due to being a minority, we undergo a feeling of inferiority. This film presents us with a different view on the color of someone’s characteristics. After viewing this, a person will hopefully be less likely to focus on the differences they have with other people and see people all as equals. This topic was of great interest to me due to the fact that I witness discrimination many times a day. I know that myself, an Asian-American woman, has faced discrimination many times in my life. This film helps those who do not face prejudices in their everyday life, realize what it is like to be on the other end.…

In the second case example, a theoretical perspective that may work for the family, is the Strengths Perspective. In this perspective, a social worker would acknowledge the client’s strengths and help the clients build upon those strengths, as well as realizing that they have the ability to learn and change. In this example, Romelio has numerous strengths that he can build upon in order to change his ways. One of his strengths includes the fact that he was able to maintain sobriety for two years. Digging deeper into this, staying sober, takes determination and commitment.…

Injustices tend to affect almost everyone, but for those who are poor, uneducated, immigrants and ethnics, they all seem to be at the forefront for the majority of most injustices that occur today. It can be suggested that these groups of people become easy targets because they are viewed as negative factors in a society that has been cultured towards a specific idea and way of life. Over the course of the term we have seen examples of racial and ethnic profiling, inequality in wealth distribution and a difference in quality of life and education among the poorest and wealthiest of Americans. This trend of injustices seem to affect people who are trying to achieve a better life for themselves and create a self identity that is different from the majority, but the only way to achieve success in this unforgiving culture is forget self identify and blend into a society that doesn’t accept anything short of the…

My major is social work which encompasses interconnected social problems such as mental health, drug addiction and homelessness which directly affects the prison populations and Child Welfare agencies. Recently, there have been budget cuts that have affected mental health services causing a chain reaction. A person without access to mental health services will usually self- medicate with drugs which causes overcrowding in local hospitals and prisons, at the same time, these parents are going to prison, because they have a mental illness, and their children are sent to foster care agencies all while the government is cutting funds in these programs.…

A sociological perspective The article I read was on how culture is involved in the social working sector in Jamaica. As the article says, it is known that most writers seem to agree that the word “culture” is a sort of relationship between cultural patterns of the groups of people and their survival strategies. Throughout the passage, the plural society theory came about. A plural society is one that is composed of various groups, each with its own subculture, and only a few culture symbols are shared by all.…

Understanding different theories related to social work is something that all social workers working in the field must do, if they are going to be effective at assisting their clients with meeting needs. Understanding theories is an organized way of understanding events and behaviors and situations that are often resented by those served, and while no client or situation is the same understanding these theories is a great way to ensure that you as the practitioner possess the tools necessary to do the job. I have had the privilege of working with people for the past several years in many different settings, and prior to starting the Masters of Social Work course at Our Lady of the Lake I had little formal education that was directed towards…

According to “Contemporary human behavior theory: A critical perspective for social work”, in social work there are several terms associated with the discussion of theories. The terms are theory, perspective, models and practice models. The term theory is used to explain and predict. Theories exist to help practitioners understand why something happens and to help predict future occurrences. To understand theory construction, explanation, and prediction, it is imperative to understand the differences between empirical structures and theoretical structures (Robbins, Chatterjee, & Canda, 2006, p. 5.)…

I had experienced cognitive dissonance at my previous employer. I worked for an agency contracted with The Department of Human Services in MEmphis. I worked as an employment specialist. As a work contractor, I was paid with federal dollars so I had to policy filled and “by the book”. I was responsible for the monitoring of clients mandatory work activities. If the clients were compliant, they would receive transportation each week, in the form of a bus pass or gas card. I was the person of contact for those who were absent, this particular day. I met with a client who did not complete her activity for the week. Per the policy, transportation was denied as she was non-compliant. Client had a legitimate excuse for her non-compliance however,…
