Dialectical Journal Entry: The Alchemist
1. “And this is my interpretation: you must go to the Pyramids in Egypt. I have never heard of them, but, if it was a child who showed them to you, they exist. There you will find a treasure that will make you a rich man.”
Response: Santiago went to the old Gypsy woman to see if she could interpret his dream of a child taking him to the Pyramids, trying to reveal the location of the treasure. At this point, the adventure begins and the old woman convinced him that the treasure was at the Pyramids. However, she does not tell him what the treasure is. Instead of something being materialistic such as diamonds and gold, he could be rewarded with intangible things, such as knowledge and wisdom.
2. “If someone isn’t what others want them to be, the others become angry. Everyone seems to have a clear idea of how other people should lead their lives, but none about his or her own.”
Response: This quote expresses the discouragement Santiago had for being at the seminary. He constantly saw many of the same people, who planned out his life for him. His father persistently wanted him to become a priest for the family, however his uneasiness allowed him to tell his father that he wasn’t going to do what he wanted, or what anybody else wanted.
3. “It’s this: that at a certain point in our lives, we lose control of what's happening to us, and our lives become controlled by fate. That’s the world’s greatest lie.”
Response: After Melchizedek explains about personal legends and the greatest lie, Santiago takes a turning point. At this time, Santiago decides to sell his sheep and go search for his own personal legend. However, he is reminded to never become too prideful in his journey and to always be alert.

Santiago has a reoccurring dream of him going to a field and from there being brought to the Egyptian pyramids. When he meets the King of Salem, Melchizedek, Santiago tells him about his dream and the King tells him that going to the pyramids is his Personal Legend. The King also says to Santiago, “To realize one's destiny is a person's only real obligation” (Coelho 22). To follow his Personal Legend, Santiago must give in order to receive. He must give one sixth of this sheep to the gypsy and also one sixth to the King. Once he has given that, he must sell the rest of his flock to obtain enough money to get to Egypt. Foster says that “The real reason for a quest never involves the stated reason” (3) and for this Santiago is not aware that going to Egypt is an actual quest. The King comes to help Santiago realize where he is to go, “You are trying to realize your Personal Legend, and you are at a point where you are about to give it all up” (Coelho 23). Typically when something in life does not go your way, we give up and do not want to continue trying. Santiago starts to feel the urge to give up early on, however he begins to work hard to overcome these feelings “More…

The first three chapters present this period in American history by showing us the life of a boy at the time, Tom Sawyer. From his adventures, Twain depicts that the education at the time was not as well enforced and as serious as it is today, which is shown by Tom not going to school, but instead, he went swimming. Furthermore, Twain depicts religion at the time to be a formal event, shown through the way Tom had to wash himself and dress for his Sunday school. In addition to this. Twain depicts that religious knowledge is something that the children should be rewarded for, to get the honor of a bible and a ceremony.…

Mark Twain said, “Keep away from people who try to belittle your ambitions. Small people always do that, but the really great make you feel that you, too, can become great.” Twain had the belief that people need to surround themselves with others who will encourage them to be their best. Those who belittle others who are in pursuit of something ambitious are not the kind of people who are pursuing their own passions and desires. Those are people that may never have received words of encouragement to set their feet down and run. Also, those who belittle others ambitions have not had someone to walk alongside them in life and speak greatness to them. They have not been around the great ones themselves. The small are missing something that they cannot see. The influence of people around us can encourage us to greatness or easily help us to believe we are inept at achieving something bigger than what we know.…

Continuing, the result of Santiago’s journey might not be the same if the obstacles that were in his way were not there. It’s kind of like the saying “One step back, two steps forward”, the obstacles that may have momentarily been bad or got in his way, actually ended up helping him in the long run or making him stronger. For example when Santiago lost all his money and had to work in the shop for a year or so, he ended up making money and learning to speak Arabic which was very useful for him.…

It shows the history in pyramids and other myths and legends of egypt, how they believe in gods that will guide, help, and punish. The god Horus came down from the sky as a falcon and took her slipper. Then she started to cry. When the falcon reached the pharaoh, he gave the pharaoh the slipper. Since it was bright he thought it was a scrap of the sun. Then he realized it was a gift and said, “All the gods and goddesses give us pharaohs something so we know who’s the perfect wife for us.” (The Egyptian Cinderella. This archaeological discovery is significant and will remain so throughout history as it is crucial in interpreting the lives of Egyptians from thousands of years ago. The lost city that was submerged under water for so long beholds ancient elements that were made and used by the Egyptians. These items expand our knowledge on the Egyptians way of life. Through hieroglyphics and engraved images, archaeologists are able to go further back in history and picture how Egyptian life was like and how people conversed with each other. As the fragments of coins, anchors and statues are brought to the surface, archaeologists are able to create a virtual model of what the city might have looked like at the time, giving them a better understanding of Egyptian…
