The Alchemist: Dialectical Journal
Quotation and page number
Reflection: Why do I find this quote important or interesting? What does this quote mean? How does it relate to my own life?
“Because I don’t live in either my past or my future. I’m only interested in the present. If you can concentrate only on the present, you’ll be a happy man. You’ll see that there is life in the desert, that there are stars in the heavens… Life will be a party for you, a grand festival, because life is the moment we’re living right now” (85).
This quote is about living in the present, not focusing too much on the past or the future. I often struggle with being content in the moment, and I am always looking forward to my next goal, next trip, next adventure. I want to be more present in the moment, noticing the little things like the life in the desert or the stars in the sky, as this quote says. I want to be able to be present as a teacher, appreciating the little ways I am inspired by what my students do, say, and write. I want to be able to appreciate and acknowledge the little acts of empathy, compassion, and kindness I witness in my students, rather than just look forward to summer vacation.

He smoked his last cigarette… As Nat's wife is trying to put the children to sleep, Nat decided to try the wireless one more time to see if there might be any broadcast. "What are you doing?" Nat's wife asked Nat, "I'm checking the wireless one last time for any broadcast" All to be heard from the small speaker was a scratchy irritating noise, "Nothing." After the children fell asleep, Nat and his wife were discussing what they were going to do, when suddenly the noise of the birds stopped. Realizing that the tide had risen, Nat got his shoes on and prepared another trip to the Triggs farm for some more supplies. On his drive over he heard a soft humming noise coming from the east. After a few minutes had passed, the noise had grown…

CHAPTER ONE We are at rest five miles behind the front. Yesterday we were relieved, and now our bellies are full of beef and haricot beans. We are satisfied and at peace. Each man has another messtin full for the evening; and, what is more, there is a double ration of sausage and bread. That puts a man in fine trim. We have not had such luck as this for a long time. The cook with his carroty head is begging us to eat; he beckons with his ladle to every one that passes, and spoons him out a great dollop. He does not see how he can empty his stew-pot in time for coffee. Tjaden and Müller have produced two washbasins and had them filled up to the brim as a reserve. In Tjaden this is voracity, in Müller it is foresight. Where Tjaden puts it all…

As I read the first two pages of chapter twenty I pictured what Amir had witnessed and felt an overwhelming feelings of empathy, sorrow and gratefulness that I would mostly never have to see that in my life and how when he walked through his old neighborhood all his old memories would forever be haunted by ruined and death ridden place he once called home. This is another window that shows the reader another daily event Afghan’s witnessed walking through there own or old neighborhoods. For example it said, “I had a friend there once,’ Farid said ‘he was a very good bicycle repairman. He played the tabla well too. Then Taliban killed him and his family and burned the village.” This quote was an example of one of the several thousand Afghan’s who have seen or heard of family, friends or neighbors killed by the Taliban for a plethora of unknown reasons. This two pages reveal to the audience one out of plenty troubling and horrendous ordeals that people dealt with for possible all their lives living in Afghanistan after the war.…

One’s life may seem dull when favored by many but not by one’s family. A lazy man, not devoted to his family, who neglects his obligations, is selfish and cowardly. Life is short, even shorter and less rewarding when taken for granted. Living life as a pessimist leads one to such displeasure but living optimistically will guide one to happiness.…

This quote portrays that you shouldn’t worry about the future because it’s going to happen anyways, and you shouldn’t spend your whole life worried about it. My grandpa used to say to me, that “Tomorrow will never come”, or he would provoke that, “Yesterday was the past, tomorrow's a mystery, so don’t worry about it.” It’s best to keep your mind on the present instead of worrying about tomorrow. The future is going to happen either way. If you force yourself to worry about the future, you’re going to miss all the wonderful things the present has to…

Don’t let the noise of other’s opinion drowned your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition, they somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary."…
