Diagreement With Tennis
Description
Throughout my life, I have had several disargeements and disputes involving various issues with people who are close to me. One particular instance in which I was in a diagreement with a close friend was when I beat him in a tennis match. We had played a full set with the final score being six games to five, however, there was a discrepancy in the final score. This caused an argument to arise between us which left a mark on our friendship.

Narrative I heard him shout the score as if it is an Olympic matchup between Federer and Djokovic. He shouted,“15-love!” as he set up for the next serve. The set had been an intense match thus far and my opponent had seemingly defied all odds of me winning. As I recall, the score was three games

My muscles tense, eyes staring at him like a hawk, focusing on the ball. I hear whispers in my mind saying “you are ready, now win this game.” He throws the ball into the air and another crack is heard from the other side of the court. I rush to the ball and lob it over the net, allowing my self to reset. We hit the ball back and forth for at least 3 minutes straight, a rare sight to see amongst tennis players. On his last hit, my opponent sliced the ball towards me and with every bit of agression left within me, I slam the ball. In all joyfulness, I celebrate an rejoice but this joyfulness is short lived. My oppenent tells me “it was just shy of in and was more out.” “What? That shot was clearly in, I could see it all the way from over here.” I said. “Nope, you were just shy which means I win the set.” “How could my eyes fool me. The ball was clearly in the court and on the line. I’m pretty sure you are wrong.” “Are you kidding me? I was on the side where the ball hit in the first place. How could you say I was wrong.” My body began to tense once more. I tried to take a few deep breaths to calm myself down but it did not seem to work. “You know what, fine! Enjoy your win because I am never playing you again!” My voice

“Tennis is lonely. There is nowhere to hide when things go wrong. No dugout, no sideline, no neutral corner. It’s just you out there naked” (57). This quote may mean nothing to people who don’t play tennis, but for tennis players, it defines the way it feels on the tennis court. “It's no accident, I think, that tennis uses the language of life. Advantage, service, fault, break, love, the basic elements of tennis are those of everyday existence, because every match is a life in miniature. Even the structure of tennis, the way the pieces fit inside one another like Russian nesting dolls, mimics the structure of our days. Points become games become sets become tournaments, and it's all so tightly connected that any point can become the turning point. It reminds me of the way seconds become minutes become hours, and any hour can be our finest. Or darkest. It's our choice.” This is one of Andre’s most meaningful quotes from the book. Almost everyone who reads the quote, can learn a lot about life. Andre may be writing about tennis, but there are so countless universal themes that apply to…

We had made it clear to each other that he would not go unavenged. We had enough passion to fight the world if we felt absolutely necessary and we went on through what seemed like a war that weekend. Through blood, sweat, and injury, we battled for that title. The championship match came in our grasps and tensions were high for the entire game since we didn't only want to win for us, but for our coach who had recently resigned. After a game full of devastating hits and elaborate set plays, we lost after an undefeated run of 5-0-0, but we fought to the death and left it all out on the field. No regret in our heads would ever go opposite the way we played in that title match because Coach Day had educated us all that no matter how exceptionally skilled at something you believe you are, you will never progress without putting your entire willpower to the task. Without passion, you fight for nothing. Passion is what will drive you through every hill and valley of your life. From that day onward, all I have done has been for a reason and I have strong-armed my way through thick and thin to be successful in my life and I plan to extend this through my entire college career and lifetime. I will at no time give up on what I believe is crucial, similar to being successful in that tournament for my…

To be successful in the game of tennis is dependent on the player’s technique as well as biomechanics which play a vital role in stroke production. A fundamental mechanical structure is founds in all tennis strokes.11 The backswing provides the distance. Tennis players need to be able to control the direction of the racket and the timing of the entire movement. The skill level of the tennis player depends largely on the mechanics of their forehand swing. The force of impact is determined by the racket speed at the moment it comes in contact with the ball. When maximum distance is used for accelerating that is when maximum velocity can be obtained. Body weight support is necessary for the forehand drive because shifting weight when striking the ball will increase ground reaction force to the body and the ball. A player wants to be balanced to direct power and energy without losing control. Forward momentum will carry the racket through the ball after contact. The follow through helps prepare the player for the next stroke. It should be long and the arm and racket should wrap around the body. It dissipates kinetic energy off the racket and that is when the player wants to arrive at the right point and balanced to be ready for the next stroke and to be able to play the ball back. The player’s body must absorb the remaining energy of the racket and the…

I had to get up and chase down my girl, it was my duty. I couldn’t let my team down. I get right on her pushing myself to now stay with her. She has the ball. I give all my energy to stop her from going to the cage. She quickly dodges and blows right by me. I see the back of her ponytail and I knew I misplaced my feet. I was on my heels. I run as fast as I have ever run and thrash my stick forward to check her. My stick hits the top of hers for a clean black check. I race after the ground ball. I bend as low as I can making sure I don’t miss, and I sprint to the attacking side of the field. As I run it over the attacking line, the buzzer beeps. The game was over, we lost. I jog off the field leaping into Colleen’s arms. I didn’t care that we lost, I had my best game. It took all the confidence and everything in me to step up to the plate and I couldn’t have done a better job. Colleen gripped me tight breathing so hard placing her forehead against mine. We both couldn’t contain our…

We train our bodies, improve our fitness, so that we have the strength and stamina required by a long tournament. When you have trained physically, you have confidence that your body will hold up throughout the long day ahead. When we practice and drill, we learn the technique of a particular shot. We drill until we can hit 50 or 100 dinks back to our partner without missing. By doing this, we develop trust in our ability to dink again and again. We train, we drill, we practice so that we trust ourselves. With this trust comes confidence. Our focus is not on missing the shot, but rather on our ability to do it again and again without fail. When we are training, we should be working on improving our technique. However when we are playing, our focus is on trust rather than…

When I was struggling with hitting I was so frustrated that I had taken my anger out onto the field. When I was upset about my prior mistakes hitting, I would start making error’s trying to field the ball because I wouldn't watch the ball into my glove. During this time I got into a bad habit of trying to flip the ball out of my glove into my hand and that made me not make the plays I should have.…

He took me out of the game for a "little while" so we could "save my energy for when we really need it." I saw right through his poor attempt at enthusiasm and encouragement. The whole team was furious at me for losing the ball. I was angry at myself because I was playing poorly and had earned the name of the team loser. After the time-out, several boys on the other team that had been laughing at me marched haughtily onto the court. From my perspective, they are so full of themselves. John mouthed to me, "This is how it's done." Brandon flashed a bitter smile. I tried not to just hand victory over to them, but it was very difficult not to be furious. Eventually, I found myself scowling at the…
