Deviant Behavior And Norms

Deviant behavior can be defined as behaviors that are not the norm. Thus, it may differ from culture to culture, environment-to-environment, people to people and even time to time. What is a norm in one culture may not be a norm in other culture and in return, it will become a deviant behavior in that particular culture. For instance, premarital sex may not be emphasized in one culture but it is particularly emphasized among the Muslims and Christian. In their culture, it is consider a taboo to commit premarital sex and it will be consider as a deviant. While in other culture, not much emphasize are being put on this matter as compared to the two cultures. Therefore, it is rather hard to determine a point where normal behaviors become deviant behavior in my opinion. This is because everybody has different opinions toward what is
It differs from time to time as well because what is deviant in the past may be a norm now in the present. Another example will be same sex relationship, in which it is a taboo and deviant in the past but is more and more accepting now and is even legalize in the United States now. This shows that the standard of deviant behavior may change or vary from people to people and more.
Despite that, there are some behaviors that are universally understood as deviant. For instance, the act of homicide will be universally understood as a deviant behavior. Therefore the quality of a deviant behavior will be creating harm to one self or others. When a behavior is creating harm to one self or others, it will be universally understood as a deviant behavior.
