Course Description: Comprehensive study of the psychological development of the individual, including linguistic, social, personality, and cognitive aspects of development from conception through adulthood.

Prerequisites: Psychology 210

Course Rationale: Developmental Psychology is an elective course in the Psychology curriculum that provides an introduction to the interaction of biological, psychological, and social dynamics in the normal development of the human being over the entire life span. In addition to psychology majors, it is suitable for nursing and education majors as well as for anyone interested in understanding human growth and development. Psychology majors will receive reinforcement and expansion of topics such as the biopsychosocial model of development, neural and personality development, and nature-nurture that were introduced in PSY 210 and PSY 211.

Supplementary Reading: If any supplementary readings are needed, I will hand them out in class.

Course Goals and Learning Outcomes: Upon completion of the course, the student will be able to:

1. Describe biosocial, cognitive, and psychosocial development as an ongoing set of processes, involving-both continuity and change. 2. Analyze various developmental events from cognitive, learning, humanistic, and psychoanalytic perspectives, and recognize these theories when used by other to analyze events. 3. Explain how research contributes to the understanding of development. 4. Demonstrate understanding and recall of important developmental concepts, terms, and processes.

* Weekly homework assignments:
These will be due via blackboard before the beginning of the class in which it is due (starting week #2). I will have drop boxes for each of the homework assignments for each chapter. If the assignment is turned in after this time it will receive a MAXIMUM OF HALF CREDIT. If you turn it in after class Tuesday it will receive 50% Credit, 37.5% credit on Wednesday, 25% credit on Thursday, and 12.5% credit on Friday. I will only accept late assignments through my e-mail, and I will only accept them until Friday after class (before 12 AM Saturday), any assignments turned in after this will receive NO CREDIT.

University-Wide Requirements:

* Writing – Students will be handing in weekly, written homework and will participate in class activities that may include some reflection and writing. * Information Technology Literacy – Students will be asked to utilize blackboard to turn in their homework assignments and keep up with their class grades. * Scientific Reasoning – Students will be required to answer critical thinking questions for each chapter * Oral Communication – Students will be required to give one five to ten minute presentation on a topic pertinent to developmental psychology. * Critical Thinking – Students will be asked to critically think to answer their chapter questions.
