I.
Purpose
The purpose of this experiment is to see what affect light has on the germination of pinto beans.
Introduction: Farming corps is the most important process for the survival of human race. The plants not only provide food for our bodies but it also helps provide the oxygen we breathe. They clean the air in a process called photosynthesis. This experiment tests if pinto bean seeds germinate better if they get more direct morning sun light, afternoon light, nonstop light or no light. Seeds are dormant before germination begins. Dormancy ends when the seed environment reaches a temperature of 77 to 85 degrees Fahrenheit and exposed to water and oxygen.
III. Hypothesis: The amount of sun light does effect the germination.
IV. Materials
 100 beans
 10 5 x 8in bags
 Permanent marker
 Ruler
 Paper towel
 Water
 Masking tape
V. Procedure
1. Think of four spots that you could place the seed in. One needs to have at least 4-
5 hours of morning sun, the next 4-5 hours of afternoon sun, one needs to have light all the time and the last need to have no expose to light. Chart what environment the seeds where placed.
II.

3. To germinate the beans, place one folded paper towel, moistened but not soaking wet, into the 5 x 8in bag. Place 10 beans in a horizontal line on the paper towel (betw een the paper towel and bag).
4. Label each bag with the variable being tested.
5. be sure to keep the environment temperature above 70 degrees Fahrenheit\
6. Leave the bags alone for seven days.
7. After a week get the seeds and measure each seed root and record the length, record the length on the chart.

VII. Results:
Length of Pinto Bean Seeds root
This experiment tested what effect light has on pinto bean seed germination. A total of 100 pinto bean seeds were used, 20 of which were put in temperatures below 70 degrees, and the seeds did not spout. Then the rest were divided into four group, in each group half there presoaked

overnight. 20 were put in the window that was expose to 4-5 hours of morning sun, 20 put in a window that was exposed to 4-5 hors of afternoon sun, 20 were placed under a grow lamp that was left on nonstop and 20 were placed completely in the dark. The seeds that done the best were the not soaked seeds placed in an environment that did not change the entire time. The seed in the dark did not grow as long as the ones placed in light however they thicker, stronger and longer but were paler then the ones in light. Therefore, this experiment showed that light did have an effect on seed germination, by changing the health of the plant.
VII. Conclusion: The purpose of this experiment is to see what affect light has on the germination of pinto beans. The data shows that light did have an effect on the germination. The plants need light and a constant environment in order to germinate more successfully. The seeds that were placed in the window began to grow slower and shorter, some not even sprouting. This could be due to the drops in temperatures at night. The seeds placed in the closet did germinate, was longer than the seeds in the window, suggesting that the steady environment and temperature may have more of an affect than the amount of light.

We experienced a number of errors in our experiment. Sources of error were human interaction, inaccurate measurements, and incorrectly handling the seeds and materials. In the future, these problems can be avoided by interfering with the plastic bags that contained the seeds, adding the most accurate amount of solute as possible, or making sure that we don’t crush the seeds or the towel that was inserted in the bag. Ideas for future experimentation would be to plant the seeds outside so that the sun would be used as the…

Please notice the attached page for the data of each seed. In the Petri dish labeled “hollycock”, Experiment Group A. the group tested a total number of twenty (20) radish seeds (Raphanus sativus), out of the twenty (20) seeds, there was only a twenty-five (25) percent of germination, and only five (5) seeds had actually germinated. The length of each seed varied in lengths from the shortest, three (3) millimeters to the longest fourteen (14) millimeters. Each length of all twenty (20) seedlings were added up and divided by twenty (20) and the group averaged 2.7 millimeters in length of the germinated seedlings. In the second Petri dish labeled “control”, Experiment Group B, out of the twenty (20) radish seeds tested with just distilled water, a percentage of eighty-five (85) percent of successful germination, and the actual number was seventeen (17) actually germinated. The length of these seeds varied in sized from the shortest of seven (7) millimeters to the longest of ninety-two (92) millimeters. Each length of all germinated seeds from the controlled group were added up and then divided by twenty (20) and the average length of the germinated seedlings is 19.35…

We then made four small indents in each of the pots towards the middle of the pot and placed a seed, using forceps, in each of the four indents. Once the seeds were in each of the pots, we covered the seeds with the soil around them. The pots were then watered and placed into a large growing plate that was covered with mesh netting.…

By proving that artificial light can give plants the ample amount of nutrients and energy, people can now make use of this kind of light for their plants to grow healthy and unharmed. By using this kind of light, plants can now be protected from destruction by natural disasters. Also, indoor plants can now have sufficient amount of light for them to live. By controlling the time of light that a plant is exposed into, people can give the right amount of light that the plant will need. Whenever there is lack in sunlight, people can always make use of…

Seeds generally require two to three days to germinate (when they break through the soil) and another week to grow tall enough to have leaves so that the effects of light become evident. Once germinated, the plants in the dark will grow faster than the plants in the light. However, they will be spindly and will have fewer leaves. If the experiment were stopped before the plants in the dark condition die, the experiment will be left with the alternative conception that light is not necessary for plants to live and grow. Even though the plants in the dark grew faster before they started dying they did not look healthy. They did not have a very green color and they had very few leaves.…
