Desiree's Husband
“Desiree’s Husband” In Kate Chopins “ Desiree’s Baby” the main character Desiree is a fragile human being who was the victim of a few unfortunate circumstances. Her life starts disorder and also ended in disorder. As an infant she was purposely abandoned in a gateway and found by Madame Valmonde who loved her dearly. At the end of her life she was also abandoned by her husband who shuns her once he finds his mother “belongs to the race that is cursed with the brand of slavery”. The character Desiree is a loving, caring, beautiful woman but also blinded, unconfident and hopeless.
Desiree loved her baby and her husband with everything that she had. The author uses many words and phrases throughout the story to express how deep her love went. She was desperate for her husbands love “When he frowned she trembled, but loved him. When she smiled, she asked no greater blessing of God”. When we love people we can see through differences. But in the case of Desiree’s husband he could not and accused Desiree of being of a different race which she was not. She went through a roller coaster of emotion through the story. When she finds love in her husband Armand and then has his baby she is happier then she could even dream but all the while still doubtful. She becomes devastated and confused when her husband suddenly changes; she went from one extreme emotion in her life to another. “He absented himself from home; and when there, avoided her presence and that of her child, without excuse.” She is hopeless when she learns he wants her to leave the home they had created together.
Desiree is unconfident in herself to live with out her husband and she claims “I must die. I cannot be so unhappy and live” so she tragically kills herself and her baby in the bayou. Desiree showed exactly how deep her love was for her husband by taking her life and that of her child in the ultimate act of

Women have forever been portrayed as curious, deceitful, beautiful creatures that capture the hearts and minds of men and Kate Chopin does a fantastic job of portraying women in her amazingly talented short stories. While the stories may be short, the roundness of the characters and plots are intricate, and are nothing short of depictive. For example as she speaks of when Armand falls in love with Desiree, “the passion that awoke in him that day, when he saw her at the gate, swept along like an avalanche, or like a prairie fire, or like anything that drives headlong over all obstacles.” (Kate Chopin, 116) She also does just as well, if not better, of a job describing Calixta:…

In “Desiree’s Baby”, Desiree is just the wife and the mother of Armand’s child that he ends up denying. Women did not have a say so at all during this time. Armand is the very strict slave owner, but he is also the “breadwinner”, but he makes Desiree feel complete when he is showing her his soft side. When he starts to disown the baby that’s when Desiree becomes weak because he blames her for him being mixed blood. That is when she tells her mom “My mother, they tell me I am not white. Armand tells me I am not white. For God’s sake tell them it is not true. You must know it is not true. I shall die. I must die. I cannot be so unhappy, and live” (Chopin 5). After Armand tells her to take the baby and leave, Desiree becomes depressed and does not want to live…

First, it is possible to see similarities between both short stories regarding the subject of love. Indeed in both stories, the man feelings make him take control of the relationship over the woman feelings. In the beginning of Desiree’s Baby, Armand Aubigny was deeply in love with Desiree and so was she. Also the only indication on how the relationship between both lovers has started was because of Armand’s feelings for Desiree. However as soon as Armand suspected his wife and baby of being of black ancestry, he wanted nothing to do with them. It went from: ‘’The passion that awoke in him that day, when he saw her at the gate, swept along like an avalanche […] or like anything that drives headlong over all obstacles’’ (p. 1) to ‘’When he spoke to her, it was with averted eyes, from which the old love-light seemed to have gone out’’ (p. 2). Even though Desiree was still in love with him and tried to make him change his mind about her, the relationship was over. In summary, Armand ended the relationship as instantly as he started it. We can a similar contrast in The Lady with the Pet Dog where Dmitri Dmitritch Gurov started the relationship and also, revived it. Indeed, at the beginning his love for Anna made him make the first move: ‘’the tempting thought of a swift, fleeting love affair, a romance with an unknown woman, whose name he did not know, suddenly took possession of him’’…

Kate Chopin's "Desiree's Baby" is a timeless portrayal of one woman's startling descent into hysteria and the societal pressures that bring on rapid and uninhibited panic. Desiree unknowingly becomes the victim of her husband's hierarchical cover-up- he puts the blame for the child's condemned skin color on Desiree when he is in fact of black descent. This forceful allegation, compounded with other accusations of not being white that presumably take place outside of the home, in effect drive Desiree and her fragile soul six feet under.…

Man often pairs logical rationale with the underlying emotional basis for his decisions, but emotion ceases to exist when it no longer parallels the rationale. At the beginning, Monsieur Aubigny’s passion for Désirée awakens with the ferocity of all “that drives headlong over all obstacles.” Chopin compares its tenacity to an avalanche and a prairie fire, giving the impression of strength and omnipotence, and Monsieur Aubigny uses this passion to justify his quick courtship and marriage to Désirée. However, just as the fire and the avalanche, his passion weakens with every obstacle. Upon his realization that Désirée gave birth to an African-American child, his passion immediately freezes. He loses his humanity, indifferent to Désirée’s pleas…

You can feel the tension in the air between Desiree and Armand. They loved each other with pure passion, Desiree and Armand had a beautiful baby together and as well loved her unconditionally. This was until Armand found out about Desiree’s upcoming as a child and heritage. This was in a time where blacks and whites were not considered equal, and blacks were treated unfairly to the rest of society. Armand found out that his beloved wife is black, “ He thought Almighty God had dealt cruelly and unjustly with him; and felt, somehow, that he was paying Him back in kind when he stabbed thus into his wife’s soul. Moreover he no longer loved her, because of the unconscious injury she had brought upon…

In the era Chopin wrote "Desiree's Baby" sexism was a major point in the lives of women, permitting them from being able to speak for themselves. Chopin later reveals that Armand was the one who truly was of black dissent and he was the one who had passed those genes down to the baby. But Desiree who has all the right in the world to defend herself cannot simply because of her sex. She is accused of the "unconscious injury she had brought upon [Armand's] home and his name"(244). Although Chopin states that Desiree is whiter than Armand and the baby, because of the setting of the story she cannot defend her honor in saying she isn’t black. Peel writes that, "Desiree is immersed in her husband's value system and never stands up to [Armand], not…

In “Desiree’s Baby” by Kate Chopin, the character Desiree--who is carrying her child--purposely walks into the swamp and never returns. Although she wanted to keep her and her baby safe and not have an unhappy future, Desiree’s decision to walk into the swamp is wrong because suicide is never the answer, murder is wrong, and she had other options.…

In “Desiree’s Baby” the morale of the story is “we often get into trouble when we assume” (Mayer, Gary H.). The husband even though he claimed to have loved his wife rejected her in a time of need, the result of it he ends up losing his wife and son. When the husband found out that everything he knew about his wife was a lie, he forgot about everything he said and just abandoned his family, in the text it said, “He could give her one of the oldest and proudest names in Louisiana” (Paragraph 4, line 4). Armand let judgment deter him from what’s really important which is even if he and Desiree did not last he should still be there for his child. Even though “Desiree’s Baby” dealt with race I look at it as a deciding moment in a relationship, especially if the couple is married to know that you are going to stay together. The baby wasn’t the reason why the couple didn’t make it but the baby was the start of why they didn’t work.…

How Desiree reacts and how she handles the situation with her husband leaving her and her child, you can better understand why Louise Mallord reacts the way she does about her husband's so called death. Desiree's story takes place in the late 1800s and that certain period of time is when women were to be considered better than the slaves but by a small margin. At that time the women had no say in anything and if they did say something nobody really listened to what they had to say. In "Desiree's Baby", her husband feels as if he has complete control over her and that whatever he says goes and there is no discussion about it whatsoever . Mrs. Louise Mallord feels the need to be independent and sheds no tears for her husband's death because it was as if her husband was restraining her from doing anything she wanted. Mrs. Mallord only wanted to be independent because, at that time, late 1900’s, women all around were doing their own thing and displaying a model that women can do anything, she was following the crowd and was wanting to fulfill her desires, but her late husband, Mr. Mallord was not letting her.…
