Designer Baby Debate
Designer baby (“Design-a-baby”)
–a term used by journalists, not scientists
Definition: A baby whose genetic make-up has been selected in order to eradicate a particular defect or to ensure that a particular gene is present.
How production of designer babies is carried out (rough gist): Parents and doctors can now screen embryos for genetic disorders and select healthy embryos. Designer baby technology or reproductive genetics combines genetic screening and engineering1 processes with in vitro fertilization2 (IVF). This process is known as Pre-implantation genetic diagnosis (PGD).
Steps:
1. Creating an Embryo with In-vitro fertilization (IVF).
2. Removing a single cell from that embryo within the first 5 days of creation
3. Genetically testing the cell
4.

Select the sex of a future child. (Illegal in UK)

Note: The debate over designer baby technology in some ways mirrors the philosophical and moral debate over abortion or embryonic stem cell research.

Should the “production” of designer babies be ethically permitted?
YES
NO

Abuse of the use of PGD. Parents may use this technology for superficial purposes such as purposely seeking out a blonde haired, blue eyed baby for appearance concerns only. (DISCLAIMER: This isn’t possible YET, it’s just a concern that it could be possible in the near future)

Prevents genetic diseases such as Down syndrome, Alzheimer’s, Huntington’s disease, Spinal Muscular Atrophy, and many others.

However, this would mean that children with inborn genetic problems are inferior to those without, which is sending the wrong message to the general public.
Parents have a right to prenatal autonomy, which grants them the right to decide the fate of their children.
It is treating a sacred human life as a thing

First all, this process costs around $50,000 and only goes up from there (thedailybeast.com). Also moral and ethical implications could arise. Some “Designer Babies” are created solely for stem cells. After taken, the baby is either up for adoption or aborted. Another con is Violation of rights. This a major issue now which involves that the baby can decide for himself in which is similar to abortion. Finally, mistakes happen. This concept may seem old, but it's still new and has problems. So “Designer Babies” aren't always full proof…

This article, Designer Babies, is said to be written by the Future of Human Evolution Team so some, but not all collaborators include Bradley LaChance, the executive director of the Center for Evolutionary Technologies where he researches human advancement through technological advancements. Also, Norell Hadzimichalis, who has a PhD in molecular biology and has done postdoctoral research in neuroscience labs. Her experience and education is very helpful in writing this article. In the article, both sides of the argument are presented through problems and benefits with the technology and the role it has in society is explained. First of all, the problem of what to do with the failed embryos arises. Some people believe simply discarding them is an action too similar to abortion and therefore the process of genetically engineering embryos is not ethical, but a person’s opinion ultimately determines if they are pro-choice or pro-life.…

People strive for progression in order to move forward with the changing times. As scientific technology progresses, people begin to move towards the bright idea of perfection. This could be seen in the concept of designer babies. A designer baby is a baby that has its genes specifically chosen in order to ensure that a certain gene is or is not present. This concept brings about many questions regarding the safety and the ethics of choosing specific traits for a child. The articles “The art of medicine: Designer babies: Choosing our children's genes,” by Bonnie Steinbock and “Children to…

How to make a Designer Baby? That is not a simple question to ask, it hardly includes complex steps and a process. And each one or each step should be perfect and if not certain problems may occur. First is to create an Embryo with the use of a "in- vitro fertilization" or what we call IVF. The first step is not an easy step, it includes a long and a complicated process.…

Thus the experts will be making a profit out of the traits as well as the procedure. As a result, it will provide an increasingly distinguishable line between the wealthy and the poor. There will be segregation between the children who have been changed to fit a criteria, also known as the superiors, and the children whose genes were not altered with, recognized as the inferiors (Thadani). Likewise, the people who cannot afford the procedure will experience shortness of opportunity in society. In theory, the genetically mutated children will be at the top of the social hierarchy. The rewarding procedure of designer babies will not only benefit the professionals conducting the experiment, but will also create a bigger distinction between the wealthy and the…

When having a child, one of the most important things that parents hope for is that their child will be healthy. For a long time, parents wouldn’t know if their child would have any disabilities until they were born. Now with PGD (preimplantation genetic diagnosis), doctors are able to find deadly diseases in embryos. “The procedure is performed before implantation thus allowing the couple to decide if they wish to continue with the pregnancy.” (American Society for Reproductive Medicine.) This is causing designer babies to become a popular choice for parents that really hope to have…

Designer babies can cost thousands of dollars, thousands of dollars which is not available to everyone. Allowing only the rich to participate in something like this could lead to a huge imbalance in our society. If the only the rich can make their children smarter or more athletic, these enhances will give them a huge chance to be more successful, ultimately creating a never ending chain, making only the rich richer and poor poorer. According to Brandon Keim “The idea that it could be accessible to everyone is specious. We can’t even get universal childhood vaccinations. We hope now that we’re going to get expanded coverage and health care, but to think we’ll supply fertility treatments to everyone, not just people with…

A designer baby is the word used to describe the act of genetically modifying the genes of babies. They can also screen embryos for any disorders and could even been uses for modification of characteristics such as gender eye colour and even intelligence. Advanced technologies have allowed doctors to be able to screen embryos for any genetic disorders to enable them to select healthy embryos. It is now also possible to use these advanced technologies to select the gender of a child. Through In vitro fertilization people believe that we will be able to use the genetic technologies to modify these embryos to choose the wanted characteristics of a child. The term designer babies come from how journalists describe this possible situation but this is not a term used by scientist although in 2004 the term was put into the Oxford English dictionary.…

The process is called preimplantation genetic diagnosis or PGD. Once they have selected an embryo, they use a technology called CRISPR. It allows geneticists to engineer a RNA strand with the desired gene and implant it into the cell. The RNA then goes through the natural process of trying to fix the DNA. The RNA uses an enzyme to cut the desired piece of DNA and replace it with the desired gene. Even though the technology exists, designer babies should not be an option because of the potential side effects on society and the child.…
