Designating an official language of the United Stated

For my research paper the topic of choice was designating an official language of the United States. In my paper I did my best to be informative and unbiased. There are many different sources used, including my personal experiences, in order to limit the subject, and to justify the information gathered. English was named as the most appropriate language. There are many reasons that this topic has been chosen. One reason is that, this subject has always been very important to me and my family, using one language has brought us closer together. Another reason is cost efficiency, our economy is already in trouble when it comes to this problem, and finding something that will help with this problem can do no wrong. However, the main reason that this topic very important is that it has the ability to help our economy come together and unite as a whole, to have our people unite and grow together completely in a way that nothing else can.

One reason that distinguishing a language for everyone is important to me is that many people have mixed racial families when it comes to blood and step, including my own. We could all speak more than one language, although we used English as our main language at home. This helped to eliminate mixed communication when it came to everyday chores and activities. We were also taught that talking in a different language around someone who does not know it is considered rude. I understand why. Before I knew what was being said, I always felt as if they were talking about me. This causes anger and it can also hurt feelings, which is never good, be it family or strangers.

I have had numerous jobs where many different ethnicities come to purchase different products. Not being able to understand what someone wants makes it frustrating to help people. The problem is that there are too many people speaking too many languages for everyone to agree on one. However, most people that do know other languages also speak English, as well as the other language, in their homes. Official English unites Americans, who speak more than 322 languages (2000, U.S. Census). With this many languages being spoken in a country, this has to lead to confusion among the people. Deciding on one language for everyone to use would help this tremendously.

Another example of miscommunication between people is the tower of Babel. Up until this point in the Bible, the whole world had one language - one common speech for all people. The people of the earth became skilled in construction and decided to build a city with a tower that would reach to heaven. By building the tower they wanted to make a name for themselves and also prevent their city from being scattered. When the languages were changed no one could understand each other and the worlds were divided.

There are also problems here and now, instead of just in biblical era. Canada is a wonderful example of dual lingual problems. Canada's dual-language requirement costs approximately $260 million each year. Canada has one-tenth the population of the United States and spent that amount accommodating only two languages. A similar language policy would cost the United States much more than $4 billion annually, as we have a greater population and many more languages to accommodate. (Mujica, M. 2003). By choosing one language and integrating that into every American citizen, we would reduce annual cost and misconception among our people. The confusion and frustration would be brought to a minimum, and our citizens would be much happier living more peaceful lives together.

The reason that English is the most appropriate language is due to one main reason. People have been speaking English since America was founded. Changing to a different language would costs millions of dollars for retraining and relearning. This would put an extreme dept on our...
