This morning I got my tea and drove down to Moody Nolan, yet again. As I went up the elevator, I was greeted by Lisa Merket, an interior designer, telling me that I had the opportunity to shadow her. While I was in interior design department, I learned about distinct fabrics and materials. I walked to the fabric library, a collection of supplies, and helped a woman named Eva pick out a design for her countertop. We both agreed to do a matte granite, considering the fact her kitchen is contemporary. Lisa then taught me how to use photoshop. The dublin Marriott hotel asked Moody Nolan to decorate the exterior and interior of the building. With that, Lisa gave me a blank outline and I got to change the outdated textures and furniture. Satisfied…

Louis Comfort Tiffany’s eclectic sense of design incorporated the styles of the Arts and Crafts, Aesthetic, and Art Nouveau movements (Johnson 8). He had an eye for ornamentation in which he transformed every piece in a room into a humanly functional work of art (Johnson 27). Light and color were strong for forces in the design of his spaces to create a sense of exoticism and romance (Johnson 33). Though his designs were lavish, he strived to make his spaces livable and enjoyable by the user, not just museum-like rooms that marveled wealth or status (Johnson 28). He grew inspiration from the artistic values of other cultures giving him a fascinating image of design where he sought to create harmony by integrating these principles with aspects of nature in order to make striking yet livable interiors.…

The second-largest art museum in the country, the Art Institute houses treasures and masterpieces from around the globe, including a fabulous selection of both impressionist and post-impressionist paintings. The theme I decided to pick was called the Holiday Thorne room. The Holiday Thorne room has the most magnificent displays including descriptions of holiday objects that were labeled as historic from previous ownerships. Some artifacts took us all the way back to Germany and China which sparked the room for the holiday spirit. The 68 dollhouse-like rooms, built on a scale of one inch to one foot, display what rooms around the world looked like in different historical eras. The curator name was Lindsay Morgan, and said adding the Christmas decorations was a lot of work. Morgan says she spends months researching the holiday traditions for each room. Last year on NBC’s Today show, they had labeled the Art Institute’s most popular attractions. As I was absorbing the room’s beauty, I took note on how the rooms were specially made for holiday fineries that showcases historical traditions. Also they had offers on the window into seasonal festivities. New to the decorating tradition this year is the Pennsylvania Dutch (German) room. And, for the first time in 50 years, an original German Rococo room will be displayed in the same Thorne room.…

The early 20th century in France was a cultural moment which artists and aesthetic sensibilities influenced each other, especially in costume. The French couturier, Paul Poiret (1879-1944), born in Paris to a cloth merchant had the good fortune of being immersed in the traditions of the French couture. As a young boy, Poiret was fascinated with color, design, and fabric. He experimented with scraps of fabric on a wooden mannequin during the first job for an umbrella maker. His first break came when the French designer, Madeleine Chéruit, accepted some of his sketches. Following apprenticeships with Parisian designers, Jacques Doucet and later with Charles Frederick Worth, Poiret established his own Parisian couture house in 1903. Other businesses and artistic interests included designing theatre and film costumes, and establishing a design school, Martine, for the decorative arts. The Martine design school encouraged students to create designs for furnishing fabrics and wallpaper as well as designs for the printed silks and taffetas of Poiret dresses.…
