2nd ASSIGNMENT

Fatigue Failure Resulting from Variable Loading

S1.

A schematic of a clutch-testing machine is shown. The steel shaft rotates at a constant speed . An axial load, 1.xxx P is applied to the shaft and is cycled from zero to
1.xxx P. Change the xxx term in the axial load with your last three digits from your matric card number. The torque T induced by the clutch face onto the shaft is given by

T

f (1.xxxP)( D  d )
4

Where D and d are defined in the figure and f is the coefficient of friction of the clutch face. The shaft is machined with Sy = 500 MPa and Sut = 700 MPa. The theoretical stress-concentration factors for the fillet are 3.0 and 1.8 for the axial and torsional loading, respectively.
Assume the load variation P is synchronous with shaft rotation. With f = 0.3, find the maximum allowable load P such that the shaft will survive a minimum of 106 cycles with a factor of safety of 3. Use the modified Goodman criterion. Determined the corresponding factor of safety guarding against yielding.

The construction materials course is an essential part of civil engineering as the strength of all structures and constructions depends on the material used. The tension test is one of the laboratories which help students develop their knowledge in this course by practice. During the laboratory a Tinius Olsen Tension Test equipment was used, and the test samples were from low and high carbon steel and timber with grains parallel and perpendicular to the load.…

The experiment was done with the purpose to analyze systems in equilibrium using the second condition of equilibrium and to distinguish some of its use and significance. In the experiment we analyzed systems and how it is applied. After performing the experiment, I can therefore conclude that the torque is affected by the forces acting on the system and their radial distance from the axis of rotation, the shorter the lever arm the greater the force, the longer the lever arm the lesser the force.…
