GCSE ENGLISH LANGUAGE UNIT 3: DESCRIPTIVE WRITING

The Descriptive Writing task in Unit 3 is worth 7.5% of the subject award and is marked out of 20. The mark given for each of the examples provided is supported by comments related to the criteria given in the specification for (i) Content & Organisation; (ii) Sentence Structure, Punctuation & Spelling. A notional grade is indicated in each case, based on the way that the same mark scale for Writing has been used in the past, and consistent with the uniform mark scale which will be used in the future to report results. However, it is important to note that in practice grade boundaries are determined when units are awarded, and that prior to this individual students’ marks are subject to internal standardising and external moderation.

A School lunch hall (Please note that this descriptive task is not available for the 2012 entry) Condensation slides its way down the window, leaving behind it a ribbon of smooth, murky darkness. The sheer suffocating heat and humidity inside suggests the number of drenched bodies seeking refuge from the relentless onslaught of rain. In one corner, a single teacher loses the battle to restrain a group of shouting children and is swamped in a wave of uniformed bodies. Buzzing with anticipation, their instincts triggered by the promise of food, the mass of children charges past him into the canteen. Dragging back some small measure of control, he finally manages to stem the flow and continues to thin out the crowd at a steadier pace with many jealous glances towards the table where several of his fellow teachers lounge, indulging in a few sweet, children-free minutes. As the room fills, the shouts, yells and vague discussion coming from the hoard of tatty teenagers rise to a pitch and volume that could shame a football crowd. Wanting to live up to their reputation, the children continue their barrage of sound, undeterred by the half— hearted efforts of

I gazed up into the bleak morning sky and viewed the wafts of smoke, anything to take my mind off what was to come. The sound of the landing craft’s engines revved up indicating we were on our final approach. I gripped my Thompson and carefully glanced over it. The functionality of this gun could mean life or death for me and so it received my dearest attention. Suddenly the ear shattering sound of the big .50 caliber machine gun opened up on our boat. Immediately thereafter, the screech of a whistle permeated the air, and the front of the boat began lowering.…

Beads of sweat trickled down my face as the sweltering sun continued to beat on down on me. The waves crashing rhythmically on the shore were tempting me to enter those enticing waters to cool off. But, no. I could not. I was here for a job. A job that needed me to stand here with my heavy makeup bag and watch others have a dip in the cool waters while being photographed and filmed.…

Rocketing across the water, the beach and sky blur into one. But in my mind everything is still, even calm in fact. My eyes dart around. I see men. Pain and panic fill their eyes. Some tremble as if catching a fever. Other soldiers clutch on to their weapons as if gripping onto their mother’s hand when learning how to walk. Some soldiers drink from their canteens, as if it’s the last drink to enter their bodies. I feel my heart race, blood pump through my veins. The Captain yells, “30 seconds! Good luck, men. May God be with you and I’ll see you on the beach!”…

Most people will never get the chance to fly an airplane. They will never get to experience the thrill of soloing for the first time or the terror of dodging crows at 100 mph. Today started a new semester at my college and my class was English 101. I’m a very talkative person normally, but if you’re going into a new class with a new teacher you tend to be skittish and shy. Today just happened to be one of those days for me. I had seen her before but I didn’t know her very well to know what kind of teacher she was going to be so I didn’t want to start off on the wrong foot with my new teacher on the first day. I talked to my friend Laura for a little while before class actually got started. As soon as she stood up in front of the class and started to introduce herself I became silent. I listened to her as she told the class who she was, went over the syllabus, and went over how to work blackboard. She asked some question about some question we had to answer on a piece of paper and I answered only maybe two times then went back to remaining silent. She then began to go over our homework assignment called a writing sample. When she gave us the slips of paper that told us the form to write in she proceeded to tell us what we would be writing about. She said, write about a time you were silent. Most of us laughed especially me because I’m usually never silent. After class a couple of my peers asked her what to write about if we were never silent and I giggled and said, “I’m never silent”. Mrs. Ryle laughed and began to tell us about how we were silent today during class, so I decided to write about…
