Descriptive Essay: My Trip To Fish Canyon Trail
After leaving the falls we arrive at a location that I had done considerable pre-scouting in studying the aerials and topos as well as viewing from different angles from various visits to Fish Canyon. Up we climb through difficult and steep terrain, unstable rocks, loose footing, thick brush, poison oak, and other hostile plants. Thankfully the weather is pleasant with some light clouds and temps in the 60s. Our shoes and long pants are getting wet and muddy from plants still wet from yesterday’s rain. Pushing through thick stands of coastal sagebrush and white sage releases wonderful aroma. Route finding is tricky at times as we attempt to find the best way through and around thick walls of vegetation. There is an element of crazy to what we are doing. Vigilance and safety are paramount. After 90 minutes of arduous climbing and gaining about 400 vertical feet, we achieve a turn-around point with a commanding view of the canyon and beyond. After 25 minutes of enjoying our peaceful perch, we retraced our steps down. Forty minutes of demanding down-climb delivers us safely back to Fish Canyon Trail. …show more content…
Wow, that was something! What a relief to be back on a safe and comfortable path. What a gift to have a fine trail allowing casual forest visitors to penetrate deep into wild places safely without having to embark on treacherous

“We have a long way to go Julie. We have to push ourselves to reach the site before dark.” While true that I worried about our reaching the site ahead of the dark, my real fear was the pain from the loaded backpack. Ten minutes ago I considered it just a temporary irritation, but now it had grown into a real strain on my back and shoulders, and it was an exertion to walk, even on level ground. Rather than yielding to defeat, I felt it best to travel another mile of two and possibly sedate the pain through a softer hiking stride. Not until I had exhausted every possible option, which included a dose of extra-strength ibuprofen, did I not want to surrender to my pain, or speak to Julie about my problems. Since she was ten, we've completed about 40-day hikes in the Smokies, totaling almost 300 miles, and most of that mileage, if not all, were tougher than any we would encounter on Lakeshore Trail.…

The University of California, Merced’s Men’s Basketball team was so enthusiastic, as well as full of energy that humid Saturday morning as they prepared for an extraordinary adventure at Lake Yosemite. Each player greets Dr. Boggs, also thanking him for taking his time off from work in the health center to take them to the lake. Dr. Boggs, feeling warm-hearted and comforted, appreciated the well-mannered basketball players and cannot wait to get out in the lake. “I have brought my boat out here today so you guys can get the full lake experience, but I need to go over some safety procedures. I also need to explain to you all what exactly we will be doing today.”-Dr. Boggs.…

This spring I spent two-weeks in New York visiting my daughter and her family. I spend a lot of time in the city, and I love it, not only because my daughter has chosen to create and raise a family in Brooklyn, but also because of its walkability. I’m not much of a shopper, but I do like to watch other shoppers, particularly those who dress as if they’d like to be watched.…

I remember when I was young and I had to decide what color of popsicle I wanted and it seemed like it would be the hardest decision I’d have to make. These type of decisions get easier as I became older, but I remember when I was young and had to make a pretty fast and life saving decision. My childhood best friend Ethan and I thought it was the perfect day to go out for a cooling dip at Lookout Lake. We got on our Bermuda trunks and raced out of my beat down, old, white ranch house, all the way across our small town to the docks. The best place to hang out was at our hometown lake; the cooling freshness of the water and how the trees slightly glossed over us as we swam kept us from the blazing sun. The beautiful oranges and blues of the…

My family and I arrived at the Death Valley National Park at the Mohave Desert in California, and saw the sign that said “Homeland of the Timbisha Shoshone”. We got out of the car to find it scorching hot. I hadn't realized that it would be this hot in the afternoon, even though it was July. We checked into one of the many hotels there, which was the Inn at Furnace Creek. It was one of the most charming hotels I've ever seen. My mom said to the friendly attendant, “Could we please have a glass of water, it's extremely hot out there”. The attendant replied, “ Of course; the weather does get very hot in the summer; springtime is the most popular time to visit because it’s not quite as hot, and lots…

Started our expedition on the top of a hill, near a cafe/ pub which is where we found the litter; a box of beers. Apart from that the route was very difficult to navigate at first because the footpaths were almost non-existent. Furthermore, because of the remote location there was little disruption to the land, grass grew long, wild and marshes were hard to spot. There were few fields for cattle and many times our group had to take bearings because any signs, footprints and the footpath were not visible. This was probably the most physically challenging day as there were many hills and inclines.…

Have you ever gone somewhere where no one has before? Thankfully the people that left their family's to go find new land did because America wouldn't be America as we know it now. The Oregon trail was part of the trails out west which is when people would travel to start a new life. Family's would travel the trails with many dangers on the journey just hoping that they find good land. "The road to-day was very hilly and rough. At night we encamped within one mile of Fort Hall. Mosquitoes were as thick as flakes in a snowstorm. The poor horses whinnied all night, from their bites, and in the morning the blood was streaming down their sides." -Margaret A. Frink, July 11, 1850. Even though the struggles the pioneers faced on the journey out west it was worth it at the end.…

We went to my Uncle Brian’s house to see them for a family get together. I asked my cousin, Derek, if he could take me hunting soon. He said that when hunting season comes and when It’s youth hunting that he will take me. I said ok and a month later I called him when hunting season started.
