The burnt scent of roasted coffee tickled the tip of my nose just seconds before a noise so loud roared in my ear like a fire engine screaming through my bedroom. As I wiped the grit from last night's sleep from the corners of my eyes, the bright light hit them. I slung my arm like an elephant trunk on top of the alarm to find the snooze button. I heard a faint voice in the background calling my name. "Kayla, are you up?" echoed down the stairs in the deep male voice of my dad. While stretching my hands and feet to the four posts of the bed,I hesitantly answered "Yes" as my eyes opened after several watery blinks.
I crawled out from underneath my covers, emerging like a butterfly from a cocoon, swinging my legs over the side of the bed. As my warm feet hit the cold floor, I got shivers that send chills all the way up my spine. I shook off the chills and drag my weary body to the steep staircase. Ascending those dreadful stairs is a struggle every morning. I slowly made it to the top, and am greeted by my faithful dog Bella. I meandered through the house and made my way to the bathroom to get ready.
After I am done getting ready, I wandered back down stairs. I diligently grabbed my phone and iPad and once again face the mountain like staircase. Once back upstairs I am re-greeted by an anxious Bella. I fling the door to her kennel open and she bounds to the door for me to let her out. As I opened the door, the fresh morning air hits me like a slap in the face. After hooking Bella on the red leash, I went back in and put my new shoes on my achy feet. I made sure all of my homework is in my bag. I heaved the heavy book bag onto my tired back. I grabbed my car keys and made the short jaunt to my car. I pitched my loaded school bag into the backseat. I strolled back towards the house to put Bella in her kennel for the day. I quickly glanced through the house to make sure I didn't forget anything. All was good so I turned the lock on the door, closed it, and I was

Chica’s head rested in my lap while the rest of her was splayed out on the couch. She knew that there was the no couch rule, but Mark never really enforced it, so Chica would find always find herself comfortable on the couch. She was completely unaware of the puffs of fur she would leave behind everywhere she walked. Lucky for Chica, she was the cutest pup in the whole world so she and her fur could lay anywhere she wanted. I mindlessly rubbed her head as I took a sip of my tea and looked through the window into the backyard. The beautiful mountains of Los Angeles within view. I breathed out a sigh of happiness. The world was quiet and calm. A loud scream pierced the air, breaking the peace and quiet I was enjoying. Chica lifted her head and began to wag her tail, she knew that was her beloved owner screaming at some game.…

Walking down the stairs, turning the corner, I enter my room. As I open the door, I immediately feel the soft carpet, I am enveloped in the familiar surroundings. The two colored walls, the shelves that hold my books and various trinkets, and my bed with its headboard holding an assortment of items. Sitting on the downy soft comforter, I smell a faint whiff of sweet pea that is constantly in the air. While I sit I listen to the quiet music that is always playing in the background. All the while thinking of contentment.…

With my family in front, I stepped onto the tile entryway without taking off my shoes. My soles echoed subtly and strangely in the cavernous, open concept and my soul slowly deflated into the empty space. Sundry clutter was pushed into a corner, backed by boxes holding household items that I wouldn’t miss until they are at the back of the one-car garage and crying to be of assistance. Cautiously, I gave myself a brief tour of the place that I once was able to walk through with my eyes closed, albeit with a couple trips here and there. Though there wasn’t much to trip over there’s still a good deal to cleaned before we could officially call this our old place. I slide open my closet door to find not clothes, but bags and crates and more boxes. Defeated at the sight of so much to still pack, as well as tired, I retreated to where my bed once stood. I began to rebuild my personal space again, and soon I was leaning on my headboard with a warm comforter as a cushion, taking a glance out my window instead of taking a catnap on the cold hardwood floor. The sheer curtains rippled in the cool summer evening breeze, brushing against my skin like a kind ghost and I realized that the real ghost was me. The curtains still hung in the room as the last trace of my presence, but they did not move as I hoped. I had no time to spend in the past, and so I dolefully pull myself out from the spiritual afterlife. I begin to do my duties as to not drag out the…

2:00 AM, I was awoken by my cousin and all I felt was excitement and exhaustion. Right away, I called my friends to wake them up. There was no “Good morning, Janie.” on the other end of the phone call. The only greeting I got was drowsy voices saying, “Yeah, I’m up.” I hopped out of bed, running on only 3 hours of sleep. My body wasn’t ready to begin this journey, the excitement in me was the only thing getting me through Monday morning.…

My adolescent legs strain as I continue along the path aimlessly and my stomach rumbles in emptiness as I realise, I left without food. How can one think of such things at a time like that? I most certainly didn't. Just minutes before leaving for an awesome party one doesn’t remember to do a lot of things and now the only thing dwelling in my gut is the sore pain that was the increasing hate for the cruel beings that have abandoned me here. Lost in my thoughts, my melancholic walking pattern is disrupted as my foot catches on a thick branch in the deceptive darkness and I fall swiftly face first into a small jagged rock. Dazed, I lift myself up from the ground and dust myself off. My left eyelid closes automatically as blood rolls down the top of my face. Cursing, I wipe my face with my white sleeve, soaking the cotton a blackish red instantly. The shock disperses and pain sets in, sharp agony mixed with a strange tingling sensation on my forehead.…

This morning I woke up and noticed something was different. I got out of bed and went to the bathroom to brush my teeth, as usual, but when I tried to grab the toothpaste, my hand was a paw. I jumped up to look into the mirror. I was a dog! I sort of freaked out, for a little bit. I remembered that I had told my parents I was going to a friend’s house to get ready for school in the morning so they didn’t think I was home. This gave me time to develop a plan.…

The morning sun hits me through the windows and I force my eyes open only to see my beloved beside me. His pale face contains a pair of smiling eyes and saliva that’s coming out of the tip of his lips. I couldn't resist but to place a gentle kiss on him while removing the sticky water off of him. Soon I slowly pull myself up in a sitting position next to him. Trying not to wake him up, I turn my head to the panda holding the clock that is showing 7:38 in the morning. I massage my sore arms as I move quietly out of the room. The bright sun lightens the living room as I close the room door behind me. What a great start in the morning with the warm sun shining. I quickly washed my hands in the kitchen sink, which is right next to the living room. Then I…

I think to myself what will I do, how will I react, am I ready for what’s in store for me. I put on my black book bag that was sitting on the white and gold floor next to the living room. The bag is heavy from all the books I have to carry. The blaring ring of the alarm clock runs through my ears, marking the end of my pleasant six-hour sleep. I’m looking at the time and fumbling my hand next to me, managing to hit the snooze button and relapse back to my sleep. Repeating this several times, I eventually decided to get up, and turned off the alarm. I grabbed the towel lying on top of my chair, and turn around only to sneak a glance at the time. I stumble through the bathroom, flick the light switch brace myself for the glare of the lights as I struggle to open my eyes. After taking a nice, hot shower, I quickly got dressed and made my way to the kitchen. After my breakfast, I woke up my mom and told her to drop me off. She got up, and drove me to school.…

“When you smoke herb, it reveals yourself to you,” is a famous quote of the pothead and marvelous musician Bob Marley. He felt as though marijuana helped tune in with your inner being. I believe cannabis that cannabis does this too and therefore have become a habitual marijuana consumer. Being in tune with ones inner being is important, yet not the reason that I smoke cannabis. The cannabis plant is beautiful, from the leaf to the buds you smoke. I love the ‘highs’ from smoking marijuana, and last but not least, I love how I can function while ‘high’. The summary is that little nuggets of joy have been crucial in making me who I am now, and I am grateful for everything marijuana has brought.…

Photography is like any other art where the sky is the limit. The most important component to photography is the camera. I have a Nikon D3000 SLR digital camera. It is like one of my children. I go everywhere with it and when I don’t have I always feel like something is missing. It helps me bring my creative side to life and gives me just the shot I am looking for. It is heavy and sometimes a pain to carry but the weight is worth it for the end results. It has endless settings that I can adjust to achieve what it is I am trying to create. A Day in the Life It’s early morning, well before the eyelids of the day have opened. A familiar noise I’ve heard many times before, brings my mind out of its unconsciousness and back into the real world. I assume it must be sometime around six in the morning, based on similar experiences. I can hear the sound of something small fumbling around on the other side of my bedroom door across the hallway. The sound is sneaking in from a space between where the bottom of the door should meet the carpeting of my bedroom floor. Mornings that begin like this one make me wish I had thought twice about removing the carpeting to expose the bare hardwood floors, only for the pleasure I thought it might bring to my eyes. If only I had known at the time, I would be giving up many mornings of undisturbed sleep. I reluctantly poke my head out from under the burrows I somehow seemed to create in the midst of my deep sleep that chilly night. I hear the sound again, a little bit louder this time. I lay there, head barely protruding out from the warmness contained under my 900 thread count sheets and the down comforter I had purchased, in fear that one day global warming would unexpectedly reverse, and the environment with which I was accustomed to would freeze over without warning. Having been forced to fully open my eyes, I now can see there are no signs of light creeping in through any spaces around the shades. The sounds continue for a while until the day finally begins, for someone else. I can hear her doorknob click when she turns it to open her bedroom door. I can hear the morning greeting she gives to her faithful companion who waited so patiently for her to awake. Overly excited about seeing his loving companion, he quickly pants and snorts with excitement, almost sounding out of breath. She follows him down the hall into the dining room where he leaps at the sliding door excited to finally be allowed to relieve himself from the past 9 hours of having to keep from…
