Describe the world you come from
Describe the world you come from; for example, your family, clubs, school, community, city, or town. How has that world shaped your dreams and aspirations?(*) (200-250 words)

Growing up in an immigrant Russian Jewish family resembles a chess tournament. All pieces have their precise position, movements and strategies; all my family members work together to achieve an ultimate goal of making it in this wonderful county. This puts enormous pressure on me since I am the oldest child, holding the burden to please my parents and be a role model to my siblings. I have woken up at 3 in the morning to study chess to achieve my goal to win the US Nationals; I stayed up all night cramming formulas for AIME and USAMO. I sat at my computer for two weeks straight perfecting my Connect Four program. That’s when I realized, I was not doing this to please anyone, I genuinely wanted to succeed and be the best I could.
The rigorous schedule of school and volunteer work was leaving me no time to connect with my friends and meet new people, so I founded a local Heritage Club. We welcome anybody who is interested to join in, it helps us to better understand current political, cultural events and each other.

In a word, my world is nerdy, but I am proud of it and hope it will expand during my college years

I am most proud of my persistence and my dedication. Dad started teaching me chess when I was only two years old. It took an enormous effort to stay focused, but I learned to be persistent and spent long hours mastering my moves. We still laugh at my toddler photos where I am tasting chess pieces. I enjoy the challenge of learning new skills and I can now spend hours getting ready for math and programming competitions going over difficult parts numerous times. I can practice violin and guitar even when I am frustrated by the results. Patience and dedication also come in handy when I am tutoring students in math or explaining to senior citizens how to use a computer or electronic gadgets. Persistence makes it possible to help my siblings with their homework without major disappointments.
I am very dedicated to making my town a safe place, so for four years I took part in Junior Police Academy and then Prosecutor’s Summer Internship. I was also training with State Troopers. It was a true physical challenge that made me stronger and much more fit.
When I am writing computer code, I can patiently stay focused for hours. My latest achievement is a computerized Connect Four game that has a better strategy than most existing applications

Having the opportunity to play varsity shortstop in high school, reaching one hundred hit, and being selected into the National Honor Society are three such accomplishments. Growing up, my siblings and I participated in a variety of competitive sports. For my brother and me, this consisted of soccer, basketball, and running track. We would constantly practice together and would make every aspect of it a competition. For example, whoever was breathing hardest at the end of a sprint lost, whoever shot more goals in soccer won, and whoever could dodge and fake out the other was the best athlete in the family. I would try and try to beat my brother but he always found a way to get the upper hand. Compared to my brother, I saw myself as a failure. It wasn’t until one parent teacher conference night that i realized that I was far more academically capable than my older brother. I had better grades and was more well liked…

An accomplishment that I am very proud of and believe is a strong example of my dedication is the following. When I was twelve I trained for and completed a half marathon. I finished with a time of 1:42 and won the eighteen and under age group. My training for this race included running, biking, and weightlifting. Every night, many times by myself and other times with my mother, I would go out and run or workout. I remember going out Christmas Eve for interval training and then rushing home to make sure I did not miss the Christmas Eve service. The next year I completed another half marathon in 1:32 averaging a 7:09 mile pace. Last year I traveled to Florida to run the Disney Half Marathon and completed it in 1:22 averaging a 6:18 mile. Through hard work and dedication I got 45th out of over 22,000 runners in Disney.…

I think that I owe most of my improvement the BRHS Marching Band. Being a part of an activity that demands you to be the best you can and then some made me feel like I was not a new student. Marching Band taught me a lesson that most people learn when they get to college, time management. “If you are on time, you are late, if you are early you are on time, and if you are late, get ready to run laps.” I have this posted on my bedroom door to remind me that time management is a key life lesson. Balancing the demanding schedule of band and school taught me to not procrastinate. It has also showed me that when you work at something really hard, there is not one thing that can stand in your way when you reach to grab it. I still remember the moment I heard the announcer say the name of our school at the state competition. I can’t describe the excitement I had when I heard that we beat…

Growing up, I was never naturally athletic and very injury prone. Regardless of these issues, I always remained determined and strived to accomplish my goals. As I enter high school one of my main goals was to make the varsity tennis team. During my freshmen year I practiced every day for the first 3 months of school hoping that I could just make the team. Unfortunately I tore a ligament in my wrist for the second time which prevented me from practicing till right before the tennis season started. I ended barely making the JV team which was very disappointing, but it only motivated me for next year. In my heart I knew that I if I was determined enough I could play varsity next year on my own merit. As I progressed through the sophomore year,…

Tennis and marching band are two extracurricular activities that require both dedication and commitment. Prior to entering my first year of high school, I decided that I wanted to take my love for tennis to the next level and make the O’Fallon high school tennis team. In 5th grade, I committed myself to playing the alto saxophone in the school band and all that entails with lessons and practice, with an eye on playing in the high school marching band. During high school, I made a commitment to participate in the Rose Bowl Parade in California. After making that decision, I found out I made the tennis team. Practicing both these activities in the summer and playing during the fall semester put me at odds with my parents on what should come first tennis or band. The amount of time needed for both activities to succeed was monumental and would be an uphill battle compared to the actual time I had. This caused internal conflict knowing that one will not get as much attention as the other. At that moment, I decided to come up with a solution to my problem then put it into action. One way or another I had developed two answers. I realized to become good at band and tennis something had to change.…

Every day I wake up determined to do more than I did the day before. My past achievements include gaining leadership skills, being on a varsity sport, and learning outside of school. I have been in tennis for eight years and varsity for three years, where I have received two awards for most improved player. I was accepted into the program “Trees for Tomorrow” where I learned how to manage and use natural resources in a classroom and in field studies. I participated in a new sport, a cross country ski team, where it taught me skills and strengthened my mind set about myself. My early years of high school, I was part of the backstage crew for a play, performed at my high school. The theatrical plays were terrible, under equipped, with barely…

I feel that my greatest skill is perseverance. When I was 9, I left brick and mortar education to pursue one of my greatest passions: figure skating. It was my dream to go the 2018 Winter Olympic Games representing the United States of America. Many years later, fractures in both of my knees ended that dream. I thought that I'd be able to return, and would have a fantastic comeback story, but the knee pain never left. I was never able to return to the sport.…

Ever since I can remember, I have tried to be great at everything I do. My mom constantly tells me, "Matthew, you're biting off more than you can chew!" worrying that I might wear myself out. I try to listen to her but I really do enjoy engaging in a great deal of distinct activities outside of school; whether it's marching band, volleyball, academic enrichment or even video games, I constantly participate in competition-based hobbies and take pride in going beyond what is expected of me. This inner drive for competitiveness, I believe, has stemmed from my love for proving people that doubt me wrong and doing what others would say is impossible.…

I’m always ready to take up the next challenge. I can work very hard for a long time and finish my work. My parents tell people this too because they see me working every night on a new assignment and they could come back out an hour later and I still would be working on that same assignment if I hadn’t finished it already. I work hard every single day to accomplish goals, even when I’m not in school. Every weekend, I am working out one of my family’s houses or taking care of my three dogs like walking, bathing them and such. After school, I’m helping my family with stuff around the house and practicing piano when I have a break. Piano, that’s another part of my perseverance and my growth. I have been taking piano for almost five years now because I love it and it helps my mind grow and…
