Describe Lifetime Goals

There exists this pressure on my generation that we must have our entire lives already planned out to a T. Even as a fifth grader, I remember a prompt on a state test asking “Describe your lifetime goals and how you will achieve them.” This question is asked throughout our lives in different variations but the point remains the same. What are you going to do with your life? Asking me this prompt throughout my years in high school would have given you 4 completely different answers. Just a couple months ago I would have given you a different answer than I would have now and I’m sure a similar story can be said for almost any student. Lifetime goals evolve as we mature and grow throughout life, and my high school career reflects these changes.
Granted, while they may be great at it or enjoy it now, who’s to say their passion or talents won’t change? A perfect instance of someone’s interests changing as they grow involves a man named Burnie Burns. Determined to pursue a career in medicine, Burns was a member of Health Occupations Students of America during high school and spent a semester of his senior year making rotations at a local hospital. After gaining entry into University of Texas, he changed his pre-health major and eventually graduated with a BA in Computer Science. Burnie also worked on the campus radio network and made a feature-length film with fellow classmates. Today, Burnie Burns is the owner and co-founder of one of the most successful and innovative production companies in new media: Rooster Teeth Productions. Burnie’s answer to the question of, “What is your lifetime goal?” would no doubt have been very different as an 18 year old when compared to his college or post-collegiate self. We as humans are inconsistent in our desires and pleasures so it is unrealistic for us to expect to find what our calling in life is so early into
