The same principles of building positive relationships can be applied to children, young people and adults. If you are respectful, honest and communicate appropriately, you will make people feel at ease in your company and encourage them to communicate with you. We are more likely to communicate information to others if we have developed a mutual, trusting, positive relationship with them.
In school we develop and build relationships with others on a daily basis in a variety of different ways. We develop relationships by;
Showing respect- It is very important to be respectful and to listen to the points of view of others. In schools you will experience working with adults and pupils who may be from different cultures and have different values
Taking time to listen to others – It is very important to take the time to listen to others, especially if someone is asking you for your advice, help or need to confide in you. You should always show that you are interested and listening to what someone has to say. It is important for a child to gain the approval of adults, children and young people will respond better to a member of staff who is taking the time to listen to them, and this also gives a child the confidence to talk to staff if they have a problem.
Being clear on key points – Good , clear communication is vital when you are; giving information, discussing key issues to support learning, reporting an incident or issue, discussing concerns or giving feedback. You should always check that the other person is clear what you have said at the end of the discussion. It is very easy to get distracted from the main points, always summarise key points at the end of the discussion and ask the children questions to clarify and check their understanding, or get them to repeat back to you what they need to
