Descent From The Cross Analysis
Analysis of The Descent from the Cross Vincenzo, Danti’s “The Decent from the Cross” was cast in 1560. It is 44.5cm high by 47.1 cm wide, made from a blend of copper/bronze alloy commonly used for sculptures of that period which was then finished in a translucent green varnish. It is currently on display at the National Gallery in Washington, D.C. The evolution of the sculpted painting into what we commonly refer to as a Relief, was the first step towards larger cast bronze sculptures and eventually architecture on a grand scale. A work like this would commonly be used in a rustic grotto or as an inlay on an altar or possibly even the doors of a church. Early bronze work like Jade was designed to be handled and accessible. It combines Art and Devotion a common theme of the Renaissance. Is Danti truly Michelangelo’s greatest follower?

This connection is unmistakable, between a mother and her son. This type of relief tells a story as an image, which was ideal for those believers that were not literate. Stories or a narrative from the Old Testament utilized this pictorial technique of storytelling. Another interesting aspect of this relief is the frame. The gold inlay gives the piece a portal to Iconic status. It reminds me of religious icons of the Eastern Orthodox Church, yet it pre-dates them. The culture of 15th and 16th century renaissance scholars was equal passion for the beauty of classical design in all-artistic endeavors. This is evident in the columns that frame the piece, but the roughness of the over all impression of the piece contrasts the lightness of the divine. Essentially making the piece more approachable an accessible to the common

Structurally, the innovation of using slabs to cover the lower part of the interior walls protects the mud brick from moisture and wears, reinforcing the perpetualness of the king’s reign of the Kingdom.2 But the slabs also served a communicative and decorative purpose, the durable surface for the relief decoration. Originally all the reliefs painted with bright colors, which made the relief vibrant. But very few of the pigments survived now due to the contact with the air. The reliefs are made of gypsum, an easily carved and locally available stone. Due to the limited craft of the ancient time, many sculptures chose gypsum because it is ease the process of cut. The reliefs found in the panels are all low relief. It also requires less work and is cheaper to produce, because less modeling is required. These reliefs were carved with delicate craft, showing common motifs such as the king accompanied with the winged genie performing a ritual process or some battle scenes. The two reliefs we are going to…

While although Pope Leo X eventually cancelled the San Lorenzo project, Michelangelo’s labors are the labors of countless others who risked life and limb to get the marble out of the ground and transport it across land and water is truly worth noting. We rightly marvel at the great works of architecture from the pre-industrial world. We extol their design, their ingenuity in construction, and their durability. Perhaps we ought to marvel more that they even got any stone to the…

“What spirit is so empty and blind, that it cannot recognize that the foot is more noble than the shoe, and skin more beautiful than the garment with which it is clothed” (Michelangelo). Michelangelo was one of the great artist who created great art during the Renaissance period. One of his most popular paintings is the Ceiling from the Sistine Chapel with the Creation of Adam being the main focal point. Art in the Renaissance period was more focused on the aspects of realism, humanism, and the prospective of what was created. Leonardo da Vinci was perhaps the most interesting artist of the Renaissance period; with that, he still holds presumably the most idealized painting in the world today, priced upwards of $1 Billion the Mona Lisa. Both…

Throughout history there have been rulers that have come and gone, with this alone, it sets up a challenge for the artist of the time to create a lasting piece of the ruler in a way that would stand out from all the rest. This is seen with The Head of a Ruler from 2300 to 2000 BC and The Marble Portrait of the Emperor Carcalla from 212 to 217 CE, they both were at one time a public figure of royal status, but they have their own individuality in the way these artists made them for their time and way of remembering them by. The Head of a Ruler represents a classic way of how rulers are remembered whereas The Marble Portrait of the Emperor Carcalla appears more casual and sets up a new way of portraiture, expression wise, for years to come.…

First, but probably least important, DaVinci and Michelangelo led very similar childhoods. Neither was encouraged in arts by their parents, and had originally wanted to be businessmen. They even had similar physical features, being short in stature, with long faces and a scruffy lengthy beard. More importantly, Michelangelo and DaVinci were skilled painters and artisans. They focused greatly on their works and often spent a great deal of time on projects. We can associate both artists with classical pieces, but many more people find it easier to connect DaVinci with the afamed "Mona Lisa". Each artist had their own personal tastes, but both frequently produced works of a religious connotation, striving with the ideals of the Renaissance and humanism, but Michelangelo usually only strived for accurate depiction of stories or tales, he painted, sculpted and depicted the human body, with an extreme accuracy, and attention to form,…

I find it surprising that the in artistic culture of Early Renaissance Florence, the artist seems to seek prestige. Most of the paintings that are reviewed in class had a religious function or the symbolism functioned in a religious context. Even the bronze sculptures by Brunelleschi and Ghiberti still functioned in a religious context; the objects were telling the story of the Sacrifice of Isaac and serving as decoration for the Baptistery in Florence.…

This sculpture was most likely the artist's attempt to capture the essence of some fable that had been passed down through the generations. Perhaps more likely, it could have been the artist's own imagination that fathomed the macabre beauty of the rendered scene. The sculpture is done in high relief, carved out of a solid block of marble. The lines and curves of the sculpture give each character within it great definition. It almost appears though, from the…

I experienced the work of art in an informal way because it was a nude woman and she’s on the bed with a sort of comfortable expression and gesture. Also, it felt as if this painting was meant to be seen in private by someone it was painted for. The fact that it was secluded, not hung like other bigger pieces, and how it was in the room with other artworks among the Rococo style, there was no stress felt, and I sort of almost felt fluffy and relaxed as if this painting was in my own home too. I also had a feeling like I could grab this piece off the platform as if it was me picking up a photo frame at my mom’s house to look at. I think it was originally seen as a private painting like how it’s in a private placement in the museum and since the Rococo period was about love, being happy and carefree, then that’s what the painting was meant to do. The gold framing wasn’t necessarily unique in the museum because most of the 14th-16th century pieces had some gold detailed framing.…
