Department Of Homeland Security In The United States
The term “Homeland Security” was born of the domestic terrorism incident in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma in 1995. With the realization that our national security could really be threatened on any day of the week, our government leaders decided to take action. The Department of Homeland Security was born of the international terrorism incident on September 11, 2001. There were multiple steps in place addressing our homeland security issues prior to the events of 9/11. Unfortunately, none of these reports were effective in stopping the worst terror attack on United States soil. These types of events obviously to not wait for optimal planning by U.S. countermeasures. Homeland security is defined as a concentrated national effort to ensure a homeland that is safe, secure, and resilient against terrorism and other hazards where American interest, aspirations, …show more content…
If these mentioned events have taught us anything, it would be that our country still has lot of work to do to strengthen our National Security. With many more recent acts of terroristic events, our government has a long road ahead of them. We can never know how our defense will stack up until it’s put to the test. It must then succeed as we hope it would, or fall flat on its face to send our government back to the drawing board for ideas on continuous process improvement. The Department of Homeland Security has 5 enduring missions. First and foremost, its job is to prevent terrorism and enhance national security. Without steps in place, we risk to lose thousands of Americans due to continuous terrorist attacks or lack of attention to detail from a natural disaster.
The second mission is to secure the borders of the U.S. to Mexico and Canada. This is key in keeping terrorism at bay. We cannot afford to let terrorist fall through the cracks and sneak across our borders

The first act talked about is The Homeland Security Act, “In 2001 and 2002, the Committee led the effort to consolidate the 22 disparate agencies... into one Department of Homeland Security with the unified purpose of protecting the homeland” (“9-11 Commision, Homeland Security, and Intelligence Reform”). This act was the first big leap of public safety throughout the United States. Some believe that the DHS was the most necessary structural government change since the National Security Act in 1947 (Knight). One of the first times that the DHS was tested was when Hurricane Katrina struck the Gulf Coast. The U.S. Senate explained the act by saying,“...the Committee drafted and Congress enacted the Post Katrina Emergency Management Reform Act of 2006, which strengthened the Department’s ability to protect the nation from “all hazards” – whether natural or man-made” (“9-11 Commision, Homeland Security, and Intelligence Reform”).
