A cyber-attack is a deliberate exploitation of computer systems, technology-dependent enterprises, and networks (Janssen, n.d.). There are 11 potential security threats thought to be the top security threats for 2013; targeted attacks and cyber-espionage, hacktivism, nation-state-sponsored cyber-attacks, legal surveillance tools, clouds and malware, privacy threats, fake security certificates, ransomeware spreading globally, MAC OS malware, mobile malware, and vulnerabilities and exploits (Davis, 2013). Symantec’s 2013 Internet Security Threat report finds that there was a 42% increase in targeted attacks in 2012…
For example, SFO which is part of the private security program, SPP, conducts emergency exercises each year even though it is required by federal regulations to carry out such a drill every three years. SFO Airport Director declares that this concept is adopted by SFO to maintain high level of training and preparedness against any threat (John L. Martin, 2014).…
As we approach the 13th anniversary of 9/11, America’s air security is more stable. We are more prepared to confront any threats against our airlines. Prior to September 11, 2001, there was only limited technology in place to protect the threats to passengers or the aircraft. Prior to 9/11, security had been handled by each airport, which outsourced to private security companies. Immediately following the attacks, congress created the TSA agency. The new TSA implemented procedures that included stricter guidelines on passenger and luggage screening. Only ticketed passengers could go through security, and an ever-changing array of machinery and procedures were introduced to scan for weapons and destructive items. As new threats were discovered after 9/11, new procedures were introduced, including removing shoes and banning liquids.Second, we’ve improved security with technology that provides advanced screening for explosives. For example at theEven though the pain caused on September 11, 2011 will never be taken back, the American people have taken action to make the United States stronger and more determined to preserve, protect and defend the freedoms which have always defined our nation. checkpoints nationwide, “TSA utilizes Advanced Imaging Technology – among other advanced technologies such as Explosives Trace Detection and Bottle Liquid Scanners–“ that provide us with the best opportunity to detect explosives. With upgraded software, safety is even more efficient, while at the same time ensuring privacy protection for all passengers.Third, TSA now screens all air cargo transported on passenger planes domestically and we are working with our international partners to achieve this level of screening for all international inbound cargo on passenger planes. Airplanes themselves also underwent major overhauls: Fortified cockpit doors were introduced, and first-class cabin curtains were dropped by some airlines. Pilots can now apply to become a federal flight deck…
In an effort to maintain the security of our nation, the Department of Homeland Security has developed a system called the National Terrorism Advisory System that releases security threat updates that can be easily accessible to other departments, private organizations, and even the public. However, before the National Terrorism Advisory System, or NTAS, there was the Homeland Security Advisory System, or HSAS, which was a color-coded advisory system that correlated the threat level to that of green, blue, yellow, orange, and red. In this paper, the author will further explain the two systems as well as explain the differences in the systems and why there was a change. The author will begin with discussing the Homeland Security Advisory System.…
Should Congress have enacted the patriot act to combat terrorism and protect citizens after 9/11/2001, or was it an extreme measure of legislation that violated our civil liberties?…
The current immigration policy is seriously treated as a national security issue due to the rise of illegal immigration, drugs smuggling, and terrorism in recent years (Andreas, 2009). Preventing another 9/11 has been at the top of the agenda in all recent presidential administrations, which has made the immigration policy to fall around this issue by creating new anti-terrorism programs and initiatives that restricts the admission of person into the United States (Andreas, 2009). Before 9/11 immigration in the United States was a “Low Politics” issue meaning that it was not a top priority for presidents, government and state officials (Andreas, 2009). During that time the United States and Mexican border was just a mangle chain like fence with no border patrol officers and anybody could leave and enter the U.S. as they pleased without going through any border searches (Andreas, 2009). After 9/11 the issue of immigration went from “Low Politics” to “High Politics” to the extent that many presidential campaigns have run promising that immigration will be one…
The mission set of each and every one of the operational agencies within the U.S. Department of Homeland Security is critical in the overall success of the DHS mission, keeping America free from terrorist activity. The task of protecting our nation against terror is a no-fail mission, and each of the organizations with the DHS has a critical role with their own staff of expert personnel, trained and proficient in a unique set of skills to contribute to this highly important mission. In any organization charged with providing security, it is imperative to ensure there are no gaps in the protection to be provided. Within the Department of Homeland Security this is no different,…
The Department of Homeland Security are wide-ranging, and their goal is clear: “A safer, more secure America, which is resilient against terrorism and other potential threats.” The three key concepts form the foundation of our national homeland security strategy designed to achieve this vision: The three are as follows 1) Security 2), Resilience 3), Custom and Exchange. These concepts drive broad areas of activity that the Quadrennial Homeland Security Review (QHSR) process defines as homeland security missions. It prevent, to protect, to respond, and recover, as well as to build in security, to ensure resilience, and to facilitate customs and exchange. The responsibility falls on hundreds of thousands of people from across the federal government, state, local, tribal, and territorial…
The CIA had failed to alert INS and the FBI about their possible entrance into the United States. Khalid and Nawaf entered the United States unnoticed in Los Angeles on January 15, 2000 (9/11 Commission Report 2004, 355). The 9/11 Commission Report brought into place the Intelligence Reform and Terrorism Prevention Act of 2004; the IRTPA established the Office of the Director of National Intelligence who serves as the head of the intelligence community; “act as the principal adviser to the President, to the National Security Council. And the Homeland Security Council for intelligence matters related to the national security” (IRTPA 2004, Sec 102). The Directory of National Intelligence has access to all intelligence and is responsible for making sure that agencies are sharing information (IRTPA 2004, Sec 102). The goal of this paper is to examine the efforts made to ensure interagency information sharing and if those efforts have changed the how agencies share…
It is estimated that 8 million aliens are residing in the United States with more than a million arriving each year. These indicates that there is a loophole that could be exploited by terror organization to ensure there operatives enter the country. Some of these illegal immigrants enter the country with the intentions getting meaningful employment. However, others have the intention of passing through the border undetected so that they can later carry out terror activities against the American people. The current influx of illegal immigrants and individuals overstaying their visas has exacerbated the situation for border and interior enforcement agencies capacity to specifically focus on organized crime, violent felons, as well as terrorist groups because they use the anonymity that the current system offers them (Johnson, 2014; Stewart,…
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) was established in 2002 as a result of the 2001 terrorist attack on the United States. The DHS is composed of 22 different federal departments. Together they provide the coordinated, comprehensive federal response in the event of a terrorist attack, natural disaster, or other large-scale emergency while working with federal, state, local, and private sector partners to ensure a swift and effective recovery effort. Their missions include preventing terrorism and enhancing security; managing our borders; administering immigration laws; securing cyberspace; and ensuring disaster resilience (Mission).…
The evolution of Homeland Security seems like a relatively new one, but really the history leading up to it began in the 1800s. Over time, however, improved preparedness, response and recovery, and creation of certain protective documents influenced how we view Homeland Security today. Bottom line, Homeland Security and its governing documents, specifically the National Incident Management System (NIMS) and National Response Framework (NRF), exist for a reason, these reasons and the documents are important to review.…
There are many things within the criminal justice agency that can be changed in an effort to combat terrorism more effectively though. One of those changes could come from keeping track of the thousands of foreign nationals that enter this country on a yearly basis. Although this may sound like an impossible task to complete, it should not be considered as such when it comes to knowing who is in our country and what their purpose is in being here. The United States has gone through many obstacles throughout history and where there is a will, there usually is a way.…
Prior to 9/11, America has increased dramatically with immigration reinforcement. One of the main goals for America was to prevent and detect for any terrorist behavior. America was determined to stop any another incident like 9/11 from happening ever again. The country developed more border security, racial profiling, and eliminated the immigration reform. Prior to 9/11, citizens of the United States didn’t have to show any legal documentation in order to enter the U.S. but after the attacks everyone was expected to have a legal document to get back into the country. The federal government is very informed about the who and what enters the country because most documents contain a RFID chip ,that contains information about the individual, is…
