Dentistry Personal Statement
My reason for wanting to pursue a career in Dentistry was initially sparked by an interest in healthcare, where I felt I could have a direct impact on the wellbeing of patients. Through my work experience I gained a broad understanding of the importance of effective dental care, particularly by preventing and treating dental diseases that could have detrimental effects on the overall health and comfort of patients. It is this aspect of dentistry that has inspired me to apply for this course.
In 2016 I attended a workshop at the Newcastle University dental hospital. Whilst there I participated in a practical session where I was able to perform a filling on an artificial tooth, as well as learning about the clinical equipment used. My decision to study dentistry has been reinforced by

From this experience I learnt that dentists need to be able to remain calm and be able to carry out treatments safely and in a limited amount of time when in situations of high stress. My ability to work effectively under pressure and my time management skills would allow me to handle these situations well. At one of the dental surgeries I visited, I got to shadow various members of the dental team including a dental hygienist, a private dentist, an oral surgeon and the dental technicians in the lab. This gave me a greater appreciation of how the dental team work together and the close interactions amongst different dental specialists, as well as highlighting the many career opportunities available to dental graduates.

One of the deep cleaning I observed was a patient with infection. I was extremely surprised to see the patient bleed during the cleaning. I think that visiting the dentist on a regular basis is very important because he or she keep their teeth clean and healthy. I could realize many patients discovered about their teeth’s condition through cleaning. I was able to see Dr. Sim perform many root canals, crowning teeth, and filling cavities during three days. Through shadowing I learned that being a dentist and dental hygienist are a very important position with lots of responsibility to their patients. It was time to learn again how important trusts between the doctor and patients. I believe that when patients develop this trust, they are more likely to comply with doctors’ recommendations and therefore get better care. This shadowing helped me realize the importance of good relationships between employer and employees. I can see they always had each other to rely on for help. I was impressed by the excitement and enthusiasm they had for their jobs, and for the company as a whole. I have not decided where to work after graduation. If I work, I felt inclined to work in such a pleasant work…

I asked her questions and checked her teeth. The first thing I did was asked when was her last time she went to the dentist. Her last time was on October 12, 2012. Then I asked if she had fillings. Jaeleen didn’t have fillings, but she had a missing tooth. Her front tooth! Then I asked if she was suffering any pain. She said, “No. My teeth feels great!” Next, I asked how often and how long does she normally brush her teeth. She replied, “I brush my teeth everyday. I brush them after I wake up and before I go to sleep. I brush my teeth for a minute and a half.” The last questions I asked were if…
