The National Dengue Prevention and Control Program was first initiated by the Department of Health (DOH) in 1993. Region VII and the National Capital Region served as the pilot sites. It was not until 1998 when the program was implemented nationwide. The target populations of the program are the general population, the local government units, and the local health workers. Vision: Dengue Risk-Free Philippines
Mission: To improve the quality of health of Filipinos by adopting an integrated dengue control approach in the prevention and control of dengue infection.
Goal: Reduce morbidity and mortality from dengue infection by preventing the transmission of the virus from the mosquito vector human. Objectives:
The objectives of the program are categorized into three: health status objectives; risk reduction objectives; and services & protection objectives. Health Status Objectives: * Reduce incidence from 32 cases/100,000 population to 20 cases/100,000 population; * Reduce case fatality rate by <1%; and * Detect and contain all epidemics.
Risk Reduction Objectives: * Reduce the risk of human exposure to aedes bite by House index of <5 and Breteau index of 20; * Increase % of HH practicing removal of mosquito breeding places to 80%; and * Increase awareness on DF/DHF to 100%. Services & Protection Objectives: * Establish a Dengue Reference Laboratory capable of performing IgM capture ELISA for Dengue Surveillance; * Increase the % of 1° and 2° government hospitals with laboratory capable of platelet count and hematocrit; and * Ensure surveillance and investigation of all epidemics.

Partner Organizations/Agencies:
The following organizations/agencies take part in the achievement of the program’s objectives: * World Health Organization (WHO) * United Nations children’s Fund

The West Nile Virus has helped NYC prepare for Zika by using similar techniques that have been successful in the past. Based on past experiences, we have learned that it is best to have good cooperation among the people of the department because it allows them to easily convey the risks of mosquitoes to the uneducated people. They are also able to educate us on the different types of mosquitoes and the harm that comes with them. For example, based on the study of the West Nile Virus, they learned that these mosquitoes carry Culex with them and that they can tolerate being trapped with carbon dioxide and light. However, Aedes albopictus (zika mosquitoes) aren't tricked by this because they mostly attack in the day. This past study of the virus…

In a variety of tissue culture systems, rimantadine (25 µg/ml) completely suppressed the growth of dengue virus type 2 in human peripheral blood leukocytes (PBL). Rimantadine significantly inhibited dengue virus replication in cultures of rhesus monkey PBL. In virus-infected LLC-MK2 cell cultures, rimantadine decreased the production of all four types of dengue virus [1]. Rimantadine interfered with the generation of cellular immune responses. Rimantadine hydrochloride inhibited the proliferative response of human peripheral blood lymphocytes to mitogenic and antigenic stimulation. Rimantadine hydrochloride…

Fifty to one hundred million people are infected each year mostly in tropical and sub-tropical climates of the world. In the U.S, cases seen affected with the Dengue virus are mostly from Americans who traveled out of the country. Infection of the dengue virus causes dengue fever. Electronics has so much improved to the extent of applying its use to the health sector. In Africa there has been a very high infection rate of the malaria parasite due to the breeding environment conducive for its reproduction available in almost in all regions.About 3.3 billion people half of the world 's population are at risk of malaria. In 2010, there were about 219 million malaria cases (with an uncertainty range of 154 million to 289 million) and an estimated 660 000 malaria deaths (with an uncertainty range of 490 000 to 836 000). Increased prevention and control measures have led to a reduction in malaria mortality rates by more than 25% globally since 2000 and by 33% in the WHO African Region. The article suggests measures for both vector control as well as the disease itself along with the strategies for future preparedness. The methodology provided here primarily revolves around an approach called Integrated Vector Management (IVM) which has been endorsed by WHO. Several studies in the world and Pakistan have shown that insecticides / chemicals have little impact on long term control of the dengue virus; therefore, the focus should remain on larvae source reduction (environment management), disease management and dengue awareness to reduce its impact in the disease hit locality. Tucson, Ariz., and Key West, Fla., each have had sustained populations of Aedes aegypti, a dengue-carrying mosquito, for some 20 years. And yet, whereas the virus rippled through southern Florida, documented cases in Tucson are still unknown. The interest is not just academic—answers could help avert future bouts of the virus.Right now, with no vaccine against the virus, the best defense available is reducing mosquito habitat in areas where dengue fever is common. New clues about why some communities appear dengue-hardened could yield better protective measures.…

The causative agent of Dengue Fever (also known as the Devil's Crunch or Breakbone Fever) is the Dengue Fever Virus (DENV), a member of the Flaviviridae family and the Flavivirus species. However, there are fourserotypes of the Dengue fever virus, aptly named DENV-1, DENV-2, DENV-3 and DENV-4 and within these serotypes there are clades and strains that are inherently different in nature. However, as a conclusion, one would say the DENV virus is the agent of Dengue Fever.…

Dengue fever is a flu-like viral disease common throughout the tropical and sub-tropical regions around the world, mainly in urban and peri-urban areas. Today, it afflicts an estimated 50 million to 100 million in the tropics (Epstein, 2000). The virus has four antigenically related serotypes, which are named DEN-1, DEN-2, DEN-3, and DEN-4. Each dengue serotype is a variation of the flavivrus genus. Dengue is spread by the aedes aegypti, a domestic, day-biting mosquito that prefers to bite humans. Currently, there is no vaccine available to prevent dengue.…

With more than one-third of the world’s population living in areas at risk for infection, dengue virus is a leading cause of illness and death in the tropics and subtropics. As many as 400 million people are infected yearly. Dengue is caused by any one of four related viruses transmitted by mosquitoes. There are not yet any vaccines to prevent infection with dengue virus and the most effective protective measures are those that avoid mosquito bites. When infected, early recognition and prompt supportive treatment can substantially lower the risk of medical complications and death.…
