INTRODUCTION
I. When you’re driving down the road and your odometer trips another 3000 miles you’re probably thinking there goes another 30 dollars for an oil change.
II. Changing the oil in your car is a simple task that one can easily perform at home.
III. All you have to do is gather the proper equipment, drain the old oil, replace the oil filter and fill the car with new oil.
IV. I have been changing the oil in my car since I started driving when I was 16.
V. It is important to change your oil regularly for multiple reasons, better fuel economy, better performance, and to maintain the life of the motor.

(Transition: Now let me show you how to change your own oil starting with preparation and safety.)

BODY
I. First we will get together all the proper equipment necessary and ensure proper safety before beginning the process. A. Consult your owner’s manual or your mechanic to find out the amount of oil and type of oil filter your car needs. B. You will need a jack, jack stands, a wrench, an oil drain pan, a funnel and of course the oil and oil filter. C. Use the jack to lift the car up so you are able to crawl underneath. 1. Use two jack stands to support the car after jacking it up. 2. Before you get underneath the car, make sure it is firmly supported. 3. Never get under a car that is supported only with a jack.

(Transition: Now that the car is properly secured and you have all the equipment you need, let us see how to change the oil.)

II. The first step when changing your oil is to drain the old oil out. A. I suggest you run the car’s engine for 10 minutes before you change it. Warm oil drains faster than cold oil.

The first step in changing your oil is to place the car jack under the frame of the car and lift it up high enough for you to lie underneath. This allows you to have easy access to the oil pan. After the car is lifted to a comfortable height, turn the car on and idle it for two to three minutes in order to warm up the oil. Heating up the oil allows it to drain more quickly and ensures you stir up all of the loose sediment in the oil. Once your car is warmed up and turned off, remove the oil cap. The cap is located under the hood of your car on top of the engine. This is where you will add oil after you are done draining the old oil. Doing this will help the oil drain more easily because air can flow in as the lines empty. Once this step is completed, you will need to lie under your car and look for a flat metal pan close to the engine. It should have a bolt or plug toward the bottom. This is the oil plug you will need to remove in order for the used oil to drain. Directly beneath the plug, place your pan with a couple of paper towels beneath that for catching the oil. Removing this plug can be tricky; the oil will come out of the pan as soon as you do this. You will begin by loosening the plug counter-clockwise with the proper sized socket wrench. Once you have loosened the plug with your wrench, remove it the rest of the way with your hand. Make sure you have your oil catch-pan placed directly beneath the oil pan before you remove the plug. You must also be careful not to drop the plug into the used oil; it is a messy job trying to find the plug in the black stuff. Now…

    Alberta's Oil Sands

There are several processes and techniques on how to remove the oil or extract it. Removing the oil sands from the ground is easy. They are dug out of the ground with huge shovels and dumped in heavy trucks that take them to the processing plant. Here the oil sands are crushed then hot water is added to them which creates a slurry. This slurry now enters a seperating machine. The sands sinks to the bottom and bitumen stays at the top, it is then mixed with solvent and spun. Finally, it can be processed into oil. There is another technique for removing oil that is better for the environment and increases production. It is called the “in situ” technique. This involves injecting steam or solvent into the machine, which seperates the oil from the sand (oil is brought up to surface). One more way of removing oil is a process called upgrading. Upgrading is done in two ways: The first way involves a process called “coking”, which removes carbon, while the second way called hydro-processing adds hydrogen.…

Before you start make sure you’re wearing gloves, prolong contact with engine oil has been known to cause skin cancer. Park your vehicle on a level surface and make sure the handbrake is on the car in gear or in park and the wheels are chopped. The last thing we want is the car moving when we’re under it. Using the jack and axle stance or a ramp, elevate the car to a comfortable height. Start the vehicle and allow the engine to reach normal operating temperature. Warm oil will drain more easily and will help to drain any built-up sludge and grime. Switch off the vehicle and allow the engine to rest slightly before draining the air wheel. Engine oil becomes extremely hot and could cause serious burns. Loosen filter cap to allow for easy drainage. Located under the car near the bottom rear end of the engine oil pan is the oil drain plug. Place the drain pan underneath to catch the oil. Use a spanner or socket to loosen the oil drain plug. When the plug is loose remove it carefully by hand and make sure you’re not underneath the plug when the oil is released. Most oil drain odds also use a washer so make sure don’t lose it. If the drain plug or washer is damaged it’s best to replace it. Once the old engine oil has been drained replace the oil drain plug and tighten it firmly. Take care to seat the washer correctly. Next up is the oil filter. Using a suitable filter wrench, loosen the oil filter then remove by hand. The filter may be filled with oil so remove carefully from the engine to prevent spillage and tip the contents into the drain pan. Some oil filters are attached horizontally and will drip oil when removed. This is normal, so make sure you have your rags at the ready to mop up in and around the oil filter mounting surface to remove any old oil. The new filter can now be fitted, wash some fresh oil over the seal to prevent it from sticking.…

You then need to place your jack under the car, which the placement of is detrimental to your safety. If you place the jack under an unstable part of the vehicle it could move or bend what the weight is on and seriously injure or kill you. If you are using the jack that came with your vehicle it will sometimes have instructions on where exactly to place the jack. If you are not using the original jack then you will need to look for a flat sturdy spot, usually located around the area you are need to lift. Once you have found that location then you can raise the jack just enough to put pressure on it and yet not enough to actually raise your vehicle. This is for safety reasons, because before you actually raise the car up you need to loosen the lug nuts on the tire. You will want to loosen them enough to be able to easily turn the lug nuts but not enough to where the tire will tilt on the rotor. Once you have completed that you can then raise the jack up enough to be able to freely rotate the…
