Due to the high number of school shootings the last ten years, we at the editorial have chosen to write this article regarding the discussions on gun control, which have been up in the media lately. We will be putting the different arguments up against each other. We have gotten opinions on the subject from President Obama, The NRA and many more. The purpose of this article is to start a discussion at our University and help the students gain insight on the subject.
President Obama wants more gun control
“When it comes to the most vulnerable among us, we have to act now.” - President Obama said at a press conference for the victims of the school massacre at New Town, Connecticut.
President Obama's plan to reduce gun violence focuses on mental health, gun sales and school safety. President Obama's plan involves that you will need a mental health check before you will be able to get a gun permit. If you are mentally healthy, the permit will only allow you to own weapons with a 10-round magazine, in addition to that is it also his plan to make military type assault weapons illegal.
The 10-round magazine limit will make incidents as the New Town school massacre less deadly, due to the lower amount of ammo the criminal will be able to carry around. It is known that it is when the criminal have to reload his gun the victims and first responders are able to fight back, and the low amount of ammo in a magazine will force the criminal to reload more often.
The support for stricter gun laws in USA have been steadily decreasing the last 30 years, but so have the numbers of violent crimes too. Even though the number of violent crimes have decreased, USA is still the country in the world with the highest amount of gun related deaths. In USA 3.2 of 100,000 deaths are gun related, while the number is only 0.5 in Canada and a mere 0.1 in UK.

    Gun rights and gun control are always hot items during any political discussion, whether it is between peers or politicians. One of the many great advantages to being an American is the ability to choose for one's own self what to believe in, another advantage, in my opinion, is the right of the people to keep and bear arms. It is my intention over the next several pages to make you aware of my point of view on the issue of gun rights. These unnecessary deaths could have been prevented with safety training and weapons familiarization.     After the shooting at Sandy Hook, the controversy of gun laws began to erupt. However, not only was this debated over in Connecticut, but it influenced other states as well.     Anytime there is a crisis that has taken place, it is up to the president to take matters into his hands and come up with a solution. However his plan to stop the tragic shootings by choosing to “make background checks for gun buyers universal, putting a ban on high-capacity magazines and a ban on so-called assault weapons” (Metzler, 2013) is not the answer. Making background checks universal includes making them a law for all sales including for private sales. This then causes an additional cost to the seller along with additional time and responsibility. It also means that the buyer must give out all of their personal information to a complete stranger which opens doors for additional illegal activity such as fraud or identity theft. Placing a ban on high capacity magazines will also yield no real results. The only thing it will do is make people carry more regular magazines that take no time to switch out.
