One of the easiest plants to grow year-round are radishes. Although they are, like all plants, meant to be grown outside, it is possible to grow radishes inside with similar results. Radishes tend to grow quickly, granted that they are planted and cared for correctly.…

Diffusion is simply the net movement of atoms or molecules from a region of higher concentration to a region of lower concentration. The force behind the movement is heat or kinetic energy (also called Brownian motion). Diffusion occurs when you spill water on the carpet floor and it spreads out, or when you open a bottle of perfume and it leaves the bottle and spreads throughout the air in the room.…

The dehydration synthesis process is the process by which all organic compounds are bonded. The dehydration synthesis process takes the hydrogen (H) of one monomer, and the hydroxyl (OH) group of the another combines them to form water. With the removal of the water molecule, the two monomers are now able to make covalent bonds with each other and share electrons. Simply, the two monomers are being dehydrated to synthesize a bigger molecule. This process takes place in an enzyme that allows the process to quickly occur and create large strings of monomers, creating poly______ of the specific macromolecule. The reversion of this process is the process called hydrolysis. This process adds water back into the monomers, forcing them to break off…

The way to get the full results of this lab was through the process of osmosis. Osmosis is the movement of water across a membrane into a more concentrated solution to reach an equilibrium. When regarding cells osmosis has three different terms that are used to describe their concentration. The first of these words is isotonic. Cells in an isotonic solution show that the water has no net movement and the amount of water that goes in is the same that goes out. Isotonic comes from the root iso, which means equal. This makes sense because the definition of isotonic is: same concentration. The second out of three words is hypotonic. Cells in a hypotonic solution make the water move into the cell to spread out the cells solutes to eventually reach an equillibrium. Hypotonic comes from the root word hypo, which means low/below. The actual definition for hypotonic is: less concentrated. Hypertonic is the last out of the three words. A cell in a hypertonic solution makes the water leave the cell to try to spread out the solutes outside to eventually reach an equillibrium. Hypertonic comes from the root word hyper, which means more/high. The definition of hypertonic is: more concentrated.…

    Celery Research Paper

I always found celery weird, so I never bother or even dare eating them. However, for this assignment I decided to try them and see how it tastes. I decided to choose celery first of all because it is a vegetable that I have never ate due to the fact that I always thought it was bitter because of its green look. Second, eating celery has never been in my plan and also because this is something we don’t really see and eat in my country (Cote D’Ivoire). Finally, celery is very rare in my country and not so common. I decided to cook my celery with fish (tilapia). To begin I went to Lyn’s where I bought my celery. Then, when I got home, the first thing I did was washing it and cut it in small pieces. After that, I cleaned the fish and cut it in 5 pieces because it was really big. I put the fish in a big boll and seasoned it with some salt, black pepper, and parsley. I then cut some tomatoes, onions, and some garlic into big pieces. I put the cut tomatoes, onions, and garlic in the mixer and mixed them for only a couple of second. When I was done mixing up everything, I put my pan on the cooker and set the fire on. When my pan was hot enough, I added my mixed vegetables, covered it up, and let it boil for 15 minutes. Then I added my fish and celery and let them cooked for about 20 minutes. I decided to cook some white rice to eat with my soup. I enjoyed…

The purpose of the lab is to see how different size potatoes have faster water movement depending on the concentration of sucrose it was placed in. We had two sized potatoes, 6g and 10g, and placed each in three different dilutions of sucrose at 0.5M, 0.1M, and 0.05M. We also placed a 6g and 10g potato piece in water to act as a control. Based on the weight percent change over 60 minutes, the 6g potato piece had faster water movement than the 10g. This confirms out hypothesis that smaller potato pieces will have a faster rate of water movement.…

    Carrot Osmosis Lab Report

INTRODUCTION: This experiment is being done to find out what happens to a carrot or a potato if you place them in two different solutions. Osmosis has a lot to do with this experiment and is the movement of water molecules from a higher concentration to a lower concentration. Osmosis only deals with water and is a type of diffusion. The difference between all three solutions is that in a hypertonic solution the cells fluid rushes out of the cell and causes it to shrivel. In a hypotonic solution water rushes into the cell and causes the cell to expand and eventually pop. In a isotonic solution water rushes in and out of the cell and causes the cell to stay the same.…
