 Definition of group work method
According to H.H. Stroup,
“Group work is that branch of social which helps individuals in their relation to certain group. It is the process of helping individuals through their participation in leisure time recreational activities conducted under a group leader”.
According to H.B. Trecker,
“Social group work is a process through which the individuals in groups in social agency setting are helped by a worker to relate themselves to other people and to experience growth opportunities in accordance with the needs and capacities of the group and group members”.

The purpose of social group worker is to help the group to achieve its desired purpose through the proper utilization of the resources and the capacities of individuals. The group work method requires that the worker and the agency must take into account the needs, resources, strengths, and limitations of the group and must form specific objectives in accordance with the group’s needs and capacities. Principle of self-determination
Self-determination is the democratic principle of social group work. The role of group worker is to help the group to make its own decisions and determine its own activities, taking the maximum amount of responsibility in line with the capacity and ability. The primary source of control over the group is the group itself. Self-determination allows the group members to accept and reject the policies of the group and the agency. It is the basic right of the members.

Social group work is a primary method of social work which believes that the development of individual is mainly dependent on the group experiences.
