Definition Essay On Respect
Today, the word respect is spoken vicariously. However, we may not truly understand what respect means. Respect “is the feeling of deep admiration for someone or something elicited by their abilities, qualities, or achievements (Oxford Dictionary).” This definition can become clear when one learns that respect comes from the Latin respectus, meaning “regard, a looking back at, consider.” The word respect could also be derived from the Latin specere, which means to look at. As early as the 1580’s, a common definition of respect was used to hold someone in regard due to his personal worth or power (Online Etymology Dictionary-This definition… power). However, this definition does not encompass the real meaning of respect. Respect is the equal …show more content…
It is not our purpose to become each other; it is to recognize each other, to learn to see the other and honor him for what he is: each the other's opposite and complement (Quotes About Respect).” This quote perfectly exemplifies what respect really is. He says that respect needs to be mutual. If respect is not reciprocated between both parties, then it is not possible to live in harmony with one another. Specifically, in marriage if one does not have respect for his spouse, then the marriage cannot function and will probably end in divorce. Also, the lack of mutual respect can be problematic in the workplace. In the business world respectful employer to employee relationships are essential. Problems between these parties can lead to a disruptive business. Many times these complications are often in forms of: strikes, lack of communication, rumors started in the workplace, and most obviously loss of sales and production which in turn leads to a loss of money (Small Business Demand Media-In the business... money). Mutual respect is needed in all situations throughout

Respect is a word that has a lot of depth to it no matter what way you use it. The word by definition is kinda hard to pin down concretely because it is so subjective and it can be used in many different ways with many different meanings based on the usage. It is a word that everybody wants a piece of no matter how big or small the piece they get is. All definitions aside, the respect that most people want is the respect that is earned by the showing of honorable actions or personality characteristics. Be it dedication and sacrifices for ones job or ones moral and ethical views and principles. These are examples of some traits a person can earn respect from normally. I say “Normally” because in all facets of life respect is almost always something to be earned and given on a personal level. My personal view is that showing respect is more a statement about us than those to whom we show it. Others may or may not merit our respect, but giving others their dignity protects our integrity and honor. We can set limits, but we do not have to stoop to gross behavior to protect…

Respect has great importance in everyday life. As children we are taught to respect our parents, teachers, and elders, family and cultural traditions, other people's feelings, our country's flag and leaders. And we do tend to value these things; when we grow older, we may shake our heads at people who seem not to have learned to respect them. We develop the tendency to respect only those who are popular. We may also come to believe that, at some level, all people are worthy of respect. We may learn that jobs and relationships become unbearable if we receive no respect in them. Calls to respect certain things are increasingly part of public life: environmentalists exhort us to respect nature, foes of abortion and capital punishment insist on respect for human life, members of racial and ethnic minorities and those discriminated against because of their gender, sexual orientation, age, religious beliefs, or economic status demand respect both as social and moral equals and for their cultural differences. We may learn both that our lives together go better when we respect the things that deserve to be respected and that we should respect some things independently of considerations of how our lives would go.…
