Definition Essay And Praise-Worthy
What is the fundamental difference between receiving praise and being praiseworthy? If we could only achieve one, which should we prefer?
Praise means to say or write good things about, to express approval. Praiseworthy means deserving praise, worthy of praise. With that being said, you should strive to be praiseworthy. “We must at least believe ourselves to be admirable for what they are admirable. But, in order to attain this satisfaction, we must become the impartial spectators of our own character and conduct.” (Smith, 1982, p. 114). Additionally, Adam Smith put it perfectly when he said, “The most sincere praise can give little pleasure when it cannot be considered as some sort of proof of praise-worthiness.” (The Theory of Moral

At the beginning of the movie “Glory” there is an obvious segregation between whites and blacks, captain Shaw seemed to be of the vast minority that treated African American’s with some sort of decency. Shaw was hard on his men but only because he wanted them to be great soldiers. The overall attitude towards African American’s is what you would expect from the time. Most white men look at themselves as far superior as the black men. Even though the African Americans have volunteered to risk their lives as soldiers, they still all feel basically as slaves and tread lightly around officers. Captain Shaw along with the rest of the white men in the camp have a hard time relating at all to the black men because of how different their lives were up to that point.. Captain Shaw believes highly in treating all men equally, unlike the rest of his white counterparts.…

Whether if it’s by saying "please" or "thank you", recycling a soda, or just paying someone a compliment, these forms of kindness are what unify our community and inspire us to be good citizens. Did having straight A's and immense power in the class rankings define success? No, I believe that connecting with your peers, teachers, even the cafeteria staff was the true definition of success because by socializing within your society you develop a new mindset on how you look at life. One of my priorities is to not only excel in my academics but become a servant leader who spreads kindness and empowers others to reach their full…

Think of it like basketball. There were two sisters named Sarah and Jenny McDoodle. While Sarah was at home practicing singing for concerts Jenny was at the gym practicing persistently far basketball games. When Jenny won basketball games she received as much praise as when Sarah did well in concerts. Just like if a farmer produces good crop then he will get as much respect as when a poet writes a good poem.…

During the 16th and early 17th Century there were few detailed accounts of commoners’ lives in London, England leaving a gap in historical records. Such a gap was not just about the commoners, but the perspectives of the entire society, cultural norms of that era, and even business. However, the insight into London during the late 17th century through the 18th Century came from the criminal literature like the “criminal biographies, last dying speeches, Newsgate accounts and trial accounts” from Old Bailey (Emsley, Hitchcock and Shoemaker, “Publishing History”). This provided the most insightful information into the Old Bailey Session House proceedings, due to the trials being documented by reporters writing to inform the…

The job of leading demands that you acknowledge good work and be critical of bad work on the part of your subordinates. How you do this can have an important bearing on your effectiveness as a leader. The key here is moderation. Excessive praise and excessive rebuke are each detrimental in their own way. I am not saying that rewards or punishment are to be avoided; I simply mean that they must be metered out fairly and intelligently. One thing that annoys me particularly is the current trend in the Forces to heap praise upon people who are simply doing the good job that is expected of them. The danger is obvious (as it is in the opposite case of over punishment). It's like fighting a battle; if you commit all your resources to a routine action there's nothing left for the unforeseen. You must keep something in reserve, and this is no less true when it comes to awarding praise or…

Most people measure success monetarily. We spend the majority of our lives working towards success (“Defining success”). The word “success” is defined in the Merriam Webster dictionary as the attainment of wealth, favor, or eminence. Individuals who would be considered successful in this generation are Kim Kardashian or even Justin Bieber. These celebrities simply live in the moment, without thinking about what their goals are. Everyone wants to be known for something. Success takes several different forms but because of societal issues we have lost sight of its true definition. To be successful is to have a purpose, to know where you're at, to know where you're going and to not be afraid to work for it.…

As defined by Webster’s Dictionary, success is: “the gaining of wealth, fame, etc,” or “favorable result.” Success defined by myself is: being content in life, having the necessities, forming a family , having the career of your choice, and believing in myself in all I do. I believe that success is also trying and trying till you reach the goal or point in life you are aiming for. It’s not so easy being grateful since it’s really hard to be happy with what you already have and realizing how lucky you are to have them. I honestly wasn’t grateful for anything, I thought I never had enough, I always wanted more. Till the day came that reality slapped me across the face and helped me open my eyes to something’s I thought I would never notice. I didn’t learn to be grateful all by myself, I had the help of an amazing friend that and I’m glad she came around because if it was for her, I’d still be the same old ignorant person I used to be.…
