Definition Essay About Being Good
Although all humans are created good, society corrupts them, as they grow older. Criminals, for example, do not become criminals overnight; it’s a process in which they forget they once had kind and forgiving hearts. Goodness is an ambiguous word that the dictionary defines as the quality of being good. It leaves a lot of opportunity for anyone to fall under that category (goodness). Such as those who are religious and attend church every Sunday, but look down on those they find inferior. Those who define themselves as good people, but don’t act upon their word. Goodness is a lifestyle where honesty, kindness, and morality are practiced. Imagine this, a woman has died, and you don’t want to be the one that delivers the news to her mother, who is old and suffers from a heart condition, for you fear it will kill her. Will you tell her anyway? Everyone lies at some point in their life, it’s part of human nature and it’s unrealistic to tell someone not to; lying done with bad intention is a lie that will condemn you and make you seem guilty. A lie is a lie, but did you intend to harm someone or benefit from the lie you told? Honesty is crucial to living a life full of goodness, a life where you don’t intend to …show more content…
It’s difficult to be humble and kind, but not impossible. It’s a key part in being a good person, being friendly and understanding to those around you; even if they don’t hold the same opinions and values as you. Many vegetarians, for example, don’t eat animals because they don’t think it’s fair to kill and torture them for the sake of appetite. Although not everyone is willing to follow the vegetarian lifestyle, people must always take the feelings and thoughts of others into consideration and try to be as courteous as

In A Good Man is Hard to Find, the author, Flannery O’Connor, focuses heavily on the suggestion of “good” in the story’s characters. However, the perception of what makes a person “good” is different for each character. I believe that an individual’s upbringing and placement in society determine that person’s definition of what makes one “good.” Subsequently, I believe that a person can only be considered "good" based on his or her intentions and actions.…

Lies are told around the world multiple times during the day. Everyone sitting in this room has probably once today, said a lie. Sometimes lying is understandable for someone’s protection but sometimes the truth is essential to the person. There are multiple things people say in a day that are seen as lies such as “That outfit looks really good on you!,” “It wasn’t me!” and “I’ll be with you in a few minutes.” Honestly is not always the best policy because in the end it does not make everything better. People tell little lies so that they protect someone they care about and not hurt the feelings of another person. Honesty not always being the best policy is showed in The Scarlet Letter, “Tell All The Truth” poem, the “He Lies” video,…

Firstly, we must understand what is meant by ‘good’ well good is that which is morally right. With God it is said in the bible “oh give thanks to the lord, for he is good; for His loving-kindness is everlasting (Psalms), another way is the 10 commandments which shows God setting the standard of what is morally right and wrong. Another way of showing of how ‘God is good’ is by creation in genesis 1 and 2 which shows God either creating the world or how he is crafting everything, also in the bible of how God has preformed miracles and in todays society.…

The dictionary defines a lie as, “a false statement made with deliberate intent to deceive; an intentional untruth; a falsehood.” However, while the intent of a lie is to deceive, that deceit is not always intended to cause detriment to others. Lies can be told for justifiable reasons such as to protect the feelings of others, but more often lies are told for the wrong reasons. For example, lies are mostly told to avoid the consequences of one’s actions such as with criminal activities and academic misconduct. When comparing acceptable and unacceptable reasons to lie, the unacceptable reasons greatly outnumber the acceptable.…

First off let me start of by saying that we lie. We all do. We exaggerate, we leave out things, we avoid confrontation, we try to be inconsideration of other people feelings, we conveniently forget some aspects of the truth and even keep secrets. Like most people, I find myself in situations of small falsehoods and still think of my self of an honest person. Sure I lie, but it’s not really bothering anyone or anything.…

Being raised in the Capitalist system based on competition, we were taught that it was fine to tell lie. Some argued that it was fine to lie when it is a death and live matter, others may argue that it is o.k to lie if it doesn't hurt any one. On my personal level, I don't feel it is morally comfortable to lie to anyone. Because of the society we live in is filled with lies and mistrust doesn't mean we, as the newest generation should learn to lie. Instead, I want to live in a lie free life.…

Nonetheless, each person shares similar traits and qualities that define good or bad. My impression of a truly good person is someone who makes the best of every situation, shows kindness to all people and smiles. There are positives and negatives in every situation we are in. A truly good person will focus on the positive situations and try to improve the negatives. There are some people in this world that we will never find common ground with. That as it may, a good person is kind even to the people they don’t relate to. Finally, I believe that a truly good person walks around with a smile on their face. A smile can simply light up the room and bring a little joy to someone’s day. My impression of a not so good person is someone who is a victimizer, offender and negative. I pertain to a victimizer as someone who cheats others. Cheats them out of games, materials, and deals. Anyone who is considered an offender is a bad person in society and constitutionally. You don’t find too many good people breaking the law all the time. Lastly, I believe that a not so good person brings negativity wherever they go. When negative people walk into a room, they bring attitudes down and make people feel uncomfortable. This is why I think a truly good person shares a smile. A simple smile can change more than people…

Words, unbeknownst to most people, usually have more than one meaning. Us as a people need to strive to look deeper into the words we use. I have one word in particular that I would like to share. Great, a word commonly used throughout America. No one would ever think that a word as simple as this could have multiple different meanings depending on the setting it is being used in and who it is being said by. No one would guess that the way your mom uses great might differ from the way a teen might use the word great. The way a doctor uses great could completely different from the way a football coach uses the word great. These are some of the numerous examples that can and will be explained within this essay.…

I believe in honesty. I stand by the saying “Being honest never hurts anyone. Being a liar only hurts you.” When I have lied in the past I feel a sense of guilt and shame. I now strive to be honesty in all occasions of my life. Being honest sometimes seems like the more difficult thing to do and lying may be easier but in the long run it feels better to know you told the truth. I will take responsibility for all of my actions and be honest about what I have done and…

    Effects of Lying

Human beings have one thing in common – we all lie. Many of us like to think of ourselves as honest individuals, but what we do not realise is that there are many occasions when we will resort to lying, whether we are aware of it or not. Lying has become a part of our social behaviour such that most of us often think it is okay to do so, without weighing the consequences of our actions. True to what we think, lying can be acceptable, but it depends on the circumstances. There are many reasons for lying: We lie mainly because we want to avoid something from happening, or we are afraid of something; we lie as a joke, for deceptive gains and even sometimes, to protect the people around us. This is especially so when we think that telling those people the “truth” may hurt them, thus we tend to hide the truth by telling them a white lie in order to preserve the relationship. In this case, the lie is often seen as harmless, though it may not necessarily be acceptable to the person being lied at, as some people just prefer the truth, no matter how much it may hurt. There are other forms of lies and what defines a lie is anything that is not the whole truth. Thus, people may lie unconsciously either because they cannot recall the entire truth, or because they think that some information are not necessary and can be omitted. The severity of the consequences for telling lies differs, depending on the type of lie, but these consequences are usually negative.…

Most of the time it is easier to tell a lie than it is to tell the truth and there is no way that we will ever completely eliminate lying from our society, because it does make our lives so much easier. Sometimes though lying can come with consequences, and it can backfire when someone discovers that you lied. Lying can cause a situation to become worse than it would have been if the truth had been told. Take James Frey for an example. He wrote an autobiography called A Million Little Pieces and the book was featured on Oprah and put on her book club list. After a while it was discovered that parts of his autobiography were not real and he was humiliated on a national level. If he had told the truth then his book could have still been published, but as a fictional story, and he could have still been a successful author and had a bestselling book. You should always be careful with the lies you tell and who you tell them to because there’s always a chance that someone will find out and then you would be in trouble.…
