DECLINE OF STARDOM AND EMERGENCE OF REAL LIFE CHARACTERS IN MALAYALAM CINEMA: A STUDY BASED ON SALT AND PEPPER, TRAFFIC AND ADAMINTE MAKAN ABU

INRODUCTION
The Malayalam film had a glorious past of 80 years. It has gone through various phases of time and of success, failures in various aspects of film, of technical changes, treatment of the plot, editing styles etc. The black and white moving images became colour and now having digital format with satellite distribution and worldwide audience.
Similar to world cinema it also had stars, comedians, villains etc. The word ‘Stardom’s first known use was in 1865.It is defined the state or status of being a very famous or talented entertainer or sports player by the Oxford Dictionary. Webster’s Dictionary is version is the status or position of a star.
Malayalam had two major male figures Prem Nazir and Sathyan who dominated the industry in the beginning But 1980s saw birth of new superstars, and the entire film industry revolved around these stars. Ignoring the films with more than life characters, which made them the superstars they are today, Mammootty and Mohanlal are two great actors, who have proven their ability whenever they have got chance. Mammootty excelled in his verity roles of Yavanika, Yathra", Thaniyavarthanam, Vidheyan, Mathilukal and Oru Vadakkan Veeragaatha. Mohanlal with his natural and original style excelled in films like Kireedam, Vaastuhara, Vaanaprastham, Kalapaani and Bharatham.
Both of them emerged as super/mega stars of Malayalam Cinema. Even though some other actors did well in the silver screen they couldn’t challenge the dominance of these two kings. They are now in the status of stardom. The Malayalam film industry has now got new dimensions with young generation artists both in front and back of the camera.
