Declaration Of Immediate Causes
The Declaration of the Immediate Causes Which Induce and Justify the Secession of South Carolina from the Federal Union was a legal proclamation issued on December 24, 1860 by the government of South Carolina. The justification was published in the "Causes of Secession" document. This document went more in-depth than just the state's rights argument that is often cited. South Carolina’s stated reasons for seceding from the United States was because of the new Republican administration being against slavery and the federal government not protecting South Carolina’s property rights that were given in the 5th Amendment. "Not protecting natural rights (life, liberty, and property)“.

Calhoun proposed the states' right theory and attempted to enact nullification twice, after each of two tariffs that South Carolinians saw as one sided and unconstitutional was passed, first in 1828 and the second in 1832. Calhoun felt that his beloved South Carolina, and the south in general, were being exploited by the tariffs. These pieces of legislature, Calhoun argued, favored the manufacturing interests in New England and protected them from foreign competition. Calhoun wrote the South Carolina Exposition for his state's legislature in 1828. It declared that no state was bound by a federal law which it believed was unconstitutional. The secession of South Carolina from the Union was the most extreme way that the South argued for states' rights. John C. Calhoun was, perhaps, best remembered for his part in inspiring the South's effort to achieve national independence in the Civil War, even though it took place nearly twelve years after his death.…

    The election of Abraham Lincoln and the secession of the South led to the outbreak of the civil war. The civil war was the first revolutionary change in America. States' rights were a major issue during this time. Issues of power, different interpretations of the constitution, and banking issues led to many difficulties. South Carolina was the first state to secede from the Union. In South Carolina's Declaration of Causes, it was stated that "powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the states, are reserved to the states" (Document A). The 10th amendment which limited the power of the federal government had acted as a backing for the secession of the South. Nowhere in the constitution did it say that the states had no right to secede from the Union. This secession from the union forever changed the country. Another major change that occurred after the civil war was the thirteenth amendment which abolished slavery. Even though the slaves had fought for the Union in the civil war, they were unable to take any political action and were still inferior as it is stated in document C. The fifteenth amendment granted the right to vote to all men no matter the race.
