A. Recommendations on how to improve current workflow in the Shanghai plant:
In this section of the task, as the operations consultant of Shuzworld, I present my recommendations in detail on how to improve current workflow in the plant of Schuzworld’s Shanghai production facility.

As I reached the Shanghai plant, I received a warm welcome by the plant’s operating director Mr. Alistair Wu. Wu is responsible for production at all the three facilities in China. His team was eagerly waiting for me for my help on finding the ways to improve efficiency and they were willing to put into effect any recommended improvements. After taking a tour of the plant, Wu introduced me to Catherine Pang, one of the line managers. Wu explained the assembly line issues in the production of Rugged Wear Work boot product. The plant is budget to produce 6 work boots per hour and operates 40 hour workweek. The Rugged Wear Work boot has been design as steel tipped boots and hence it takes longer than usual to make. The assembly process of these boots consist of 8 steps as part of the assembly of the boots and below is the schedule, performance time with sequence requirements.

To increase the reliability of systems, redundancy is added. Redundancy is the use of components in parallel to raise reliability. In order to select which machine needs to be backed up I used the excel reliability tool to get my answers because it is more accurate and reduces the chances of errors. To use the tool you simply enter the reliability rate under the machine that you wish to back up and it will give you the new reliability for each machine and the system reliability for backing up that

To improve the current workflow in the plant Shuzworld needs change the facility layout so that production is more efficient. In order to do this they need to balance the amount of time spent at each workstation so that each employee is maximizing their time. According to the information provided 48 units of work boots are required for each 8-hour shift. Each shift totals 480 minutes divided by 48 units is 10 minutes, which is the maximum amount of time each task (workstation) should take in order to meet production goals. Currently Shuzworld uses 8 workstations as follows: Task A requires 10 minutes, task B requires 6 minutes, task C requires 3 minutes, task D requires 8 minutes, task E requires 3 minutes, task F requires 4 minutes, task G requires 3 minutes, and task H requires 9 minutes. The predecessors for each task are also listed as follows: B and C follow A, D follows B and C, E and F follows D, G follows E and F, and H follows G. Based upon the previous calculation of a maximum of 10 minutes at each workstation Shuzworld should reorganize their workstations to come as close to the 10 minutes as possible while still being efficient. I found that the best way to organize the assembly line is to have 5 workstations. Workstation 1 includes task A and will take 10 minutes, workstation 2 includes tasks B and C and will take 9 minutes, workstation 3 includes task D and will take 8 minutes, workstation 4 includes tasks E, F, and G and will take 10 minutes, and workstation 5 includes task H and will take 9 minutes. This layout was determined using the assembly line balancing tool.…

The decision making process that Anne Mulcahy followed save Xerox in my opinion. The company was at the brink of bankruptcy and the longtime employee, now turned president and CEO made great strides to prevent that from happening. After viewing the video, and collaborating with my group, I agree that Anne did an excellent job with Xerox and patched all the holes in the sinking ship. One of my teammates wrote that lack of structure, uncertainty of risk, and conflict were all problems that Anne had to deal with. I agree with the findings whole heartedly. The lack of structure left the company falling apart, and also caused irregularities within the accounting department. With the company struggling, there was no way for Anne to understand what she had to do right away, so she just went to work. There were two options she was looking at. The first was closing the doors, or the second was trying to do the right thing and still having a possibility of closing the doors. All this diversity she was looking at still didn’t stop her from reacting. The conflict she had to deal with was being told that she couldn’t save the company and should just close the doors, but she didn’t like that option and went to work at correcting what she could. She made some hard decisions by shutting down a project that she designed herself, as well as cutting jobs around the company. She also took the approach to talk to the trade commission by herself to discuss the irregularities of the books.…
