Death of a Parent
I believe we are defined by events that happen throughout our lives both passivity and negatively. Most of the events that change people’s paths often happen suddenly in their life and sometimes have long term effects. Whether it is a personal, religious, life style, or even a career change the fact still remains the cause for change was caused by the event.

The statements above are true for my life; my life was about to change forever. This is the day I found out my mother had only six months to live, I was only 19 years old. I was picking my mother up from a routine follow-up appointment she had at Keesler Air force Base Hospital in Biloxi Mississippi, on the afternoon of 3 March 1997. I was walking up the steps of the hospital when I saw her walking out her face was pale I asked her if she was ok, her response was no. At this point in time everything went silent she asked me to sit down on the steps but I couldn’t I just wanted to know what was wrong. My mother while holding my hands then told me the results of the test and that she had liver cancer and it was untreatable. I was frozen not knowing what to say I just grab her and held her close and begun to cry. She told me to stop crying because she was going to need me to be strong for her and my brothers, that she wanted her last six months to be happy memories not sad ones.

Let’s step back for a moment so I can explain the relationship I had with my mother because it was not your normal one. My mother was so much more to me than just a mom, she was my best friend I told her everything and she told me everything. We spent many late nights talking about everything in life from how our day went to what life would hold for us in the future. My mother was one of those people who never wanted or asked for anything for herself but was one who gave everything and would do anything for her children. When I say her children I don’t just mean her biological ones, she took care and provide for so

I remember before we left for vacation, my mom’s eyelashes started to grow back and she was so excited to go out and be able to buy mascara again. My mom fought her way through cancer and now she was able to start living her life normally again and that made me more happy than I had been that past year. My mom deserved that vacation more than anything, she was finally able to relax, be spoiled, and know that everything from there on out was going to be okay. Fast forward to the summer of 2014, my mom received her five years clear of cancer and strolled out of her doctor’s office to a round of applause by all the nurses who helped her win her fight. I remember that day smelled like the sunflowers my sisters and I had set on our dining room table for our mom to come home to. It was then that I realized I was given the best role model possible. I could not be more thankful to have a mother who is strong enough to beat cancer and a family who is there for each other no matter what. My family’s happiness and health will always come before anything else for me. My family values have been instilled in me ever since sixth grade, the year my life changed, and as long as I have the support of my family I will be able to take on anything that comes my…

Some nights I dream about Michael. He’s coming home from college for christmas break and he’s brought a girl with him. Our family is sitting at the dinner table and he’s giving my sister’s new boyfriend a hard time. He’s sitting in the audience, whooping and hollering as I walk across the stage and receive my diploma. Other times, he’s standing in a waiting room, introducing my sisters and me to his little girl. I dream about all of the moments my family and I never got to have with him and my heart breaks every single time. Michael has been gone for almost 16 years and yet he is still with me every day. I dream about him and what could have been; what should have been. Michael’s death teaches me something new almost every day. I have learned what loss is, how to deal with it, and how to grow from it.…

I still remember the day like it was yesterday, when I got the news about my mom being diagnosed with stage four lung cancer. Back then when I was in the seventh grade, there was not really much to know about it but that when someone had cancer they would die. My mom being the closest person to me and her being the only parent that was by my side, thinking that she no longer would be. When this time came there was nothing else for me to do but step into my mother's shoes of becoming the most responsible one in the house. This was the most difficult obstacle that has ever come my way due to the fact that I was only 12 or 13 around the time and I had to take care of a newborn baby while my mom was away getting treatment. She was gone for two…

During the time I was at school the only I could think about was if my family was ok especially my ill mother. “I wish you were never born”, my mother screamed across the living room. Mom was in one of her moods again, what was new. She has a way of making you feel like you couldn’t even understand. You didn’t know if you should run to her aid or go shut yourself in your room to get out of her hair. No matter what she made you feel it was always about her. I dealt with my mother’s selfish moods on a daily basis. I did not even come close to understanding this as a young child but always had an innate feeling that there was something seriously wrong with her. I would go back and fourth being pissed off to severely empathetic to her. I have always struggled with wanting a relationship with my mother; I love her and hate her all in the same breath. I can never recall one time in my life feeling like we were emotionally connected. I just want her to be sorry, and even more than that I want her to just recognize how bad it was. Ultimately more than anything I want to feel close to her. I don’t want to feel uncomfortable when she hugs me.…

The purpose of this study is to review literature related to the effects of parental death on children. Children who experience the death of a parent is considered an at risk population for psychological, behavioral, and social problems. There are many factors relating to the way children adjust to parental death. Some of these factors include the age of the child, the gender of the child, the circumstances surrounding the death (accidental, expected, or violent death), the adjustment of the surviving caregiver, etc. Children who experience the accidental or violent death of a parent are more at risk to develop psychological problems, such as depression and post-traumatic stress disorder, than those children who experience the expected death of a parent.…

I was always the type of person that thought I would be blessed with kids when the time was right. I also was the type of person that thought that people who did drugs or had abortions and caused personal pain were the only ones who witnessed or suffered the loss of a child. Obviously I was wrong, anyone can experience this and sometimes not only once. I did none of these but as read on you I am going to try and make you witness how I ended up suffering from the loss of a child. Not once but twice in a 2 year period.…

Many events over the course of my life have had a large influence on me. The one that has had the greatest effect on me was my mother’s stroke. I came home from school one day and went to my friend’s house. At around six o’clock, my dad picked me up and we went to the car. We questioned him about where our mother was and he said that she was in the hospital. I initially had no reaction, as I did not know how to react to the news. Then I immediately began to worry about whether it would impact our family or if he survived. We drove to the Emergency Room frantically. Once we got there, mom was laying in a hospital bed. She could not speak well and the left side of her body was not moving correctly. This scared everyone in the room until the doctor told us that she would recover in around a month. The doctor explained that a hemorrhage had occurred in her brain: a blood vessel had popped and blood had sprayed onto her brain. This was limiting her functions, but once her brain filtered out the blood, she would be alright. Mom remained in the hospital for three weeks and could not speak for the next two weeks. Throughout this time, I was still able to maintain my life.…

On a Saturday afternoon my mom called me downstairs because she wanted to have a mother to daughter talk, which was pretty odd. We talked for a good hour or two. My mom was explaining to me how the things that she has said to me in the past she didn’t really mean, and that one day she hopes that I’ll understand. I’m a very stubborn person. I didn’t want to forgive my mother, I just wanted her to work for my love. So of course I knew that she didn’t mean it My mom was although a great provider, I was never without and never needed anything.…

Over the months and the meetings I was with my mother interviewing her, I realized that we were very alike. People always claim that we are carbon copies of each other, but I didn’t know that we would have so many things in common just outside of physical characteristics. We talked about religion and what it really means to us and she like, me feels that in order for one to religious all he/she needs to do is believe in god. I also got to know my mother very well, including her background and what she went through growing up. My mother and I were close when I was in 9th and 10th grade; however, my junior year we drifted apart because my mother thought that I should always be studying and I thought the opposite. I wanted to explore during my junior year and since I am Indian, the expectation from me were different. My mother was also upset with me for most of my junior year because I failed my SAT and kept going out with my friends. Around the same time, I got my license, so I was independent from my parents having to drive me. I just started to hate being in my mother’s presence around that time because we would always get into fights. Then summer came and my mother started doing her MBA and everything and then we just stopped talking for a long time. Literally everyday I would come home and sit in my room. Then at the beginning of senior year, I was suffering with all the overload of classes I had taken, and I really needed that family support, which my mother gave me almost immediately. During this time did I realize that my mother just wanted the best for me and that she loved me despite what I did in school or standardized tests. Then I started to talk to her little by little about life and what she thought of it. I constantly asked her about her childhood and why she valued education so much. Then in January we were introduced to the project, which was great because I had the opportunity to take our relationship a step further. During my…

    A Change in My Life

I have endured many changes in my life and many of them have happened over the past six years. Here are some examples of the changes I have gone through that lead up to the greatest change of my life graduating high school, getting married to the love of my life, loosing my grandfather, and having my son. But none of those changes could prepare me for the greatest change in my life that I had to go through, and that happened on November 19, 201. What started as a typical Saturday morning with a visit with my parents would not end that way. My eighteen year old brother Wilson Gaut was staying the night with a friend of his Friday night and was suppose to be home Saturday morning well we had not heard from him and my mother asked me to call him to see if he wanted to her to hold breakfast for him. Well there was no answer so we went on about our morning and about ten minutes past and she told me to call him back and I did still no answer. At this point I went and began to get my clothes on and I heard my mother yelling and my stepfather telling her to calm down . Then she went to yelling for me and my car keys. When she opened the door I could tell she had been crying but I did not know what was going on. I went running after her and my stepdad told me to go with her after we got in the car she still had not told me what was going on. My mother began telling me to call my family members for example my grandmother and my aunt. My grandmother did not answer so I was told to have my aunt call her until she got an answer. We got to Upper Fort Hapton Road and I saw the rescue unit on in the road directing traffic and we told them that we were with family of the child, I still had no idea what happened. We topped the hill and I could see the fire trucks and ambulance I had then figured out that my brother was hurt. I saw a white sheet on the side of the road covering a body and I knew…
