Dear Bill Cosby
Alejandro Cordero Dear: Bill Cosby My name is Alejandro Cordero and in my English class we have read your “Pound Cake” speech. I believe that your speech is great but can be a bit too judgmental at times. I believe you gave people the truth and hat is quite great because most people don’t tell the truth or they even sugar coat it. I also feel that you can generalize a group of people; I know that you mean well but some people don’t understand the generalizations you put forward. I do believe that you speech did well but making assumptions about a particular set of people can be very stereotypical. Furthermore the fact that you said the “Pound Cake” speech helps out greatly because many people need to know the truth and since you are a celebrity this can be heard much more than an average person. Over all the “Pound Cake” speech has its pros and cons. Mr. Cosby I agree with most of what you have said about views on minority communities. For example “we cannot blame white people. White people don’t live over there.” I believe that this quote you said is very accurate. I believe this quote is very accurate because white people are not doing anything to damage the black community. The white people live on their side while blacks and other minorities do not live on the white side. Minorities blame others but those “others” have not done much of anything to this generation of minorities. To me one does not have to join the peace corps or go to another country to help out, one can just go in his/her neighborhood and help save their community. I agree with your quote you said “Just forget telling your child to go to the Peace Corps. It’s right around the corner. It’s standing on the corner”, to me this quote is correct. “And something called parenting said if get caught with it you’re going to embarrass your mother”, this quote is very quote is very true why? Because doing something horrible is frowned upon in communities. The people of your community will look at your parents and think that your parents did not raise you right. I believe that some of your beliefs are very true ad many people can agree with what you have to say. There are many views and points that I disagree with Bill. I feel as though most of the time you are profiling a group of individuals. A good example of profiling is “And women having children by five , six, different men”. To me you make minority women look as though the minority women have multiple fathers for their children. You cannot say that all of these women are having children after children after children because not every woman has multiple fathers for their children. To me this can anger many people because everyone does not do the same thing, which is very stereotypical. Another example of saying wrong in your speech was when you said “You can’t be a doctor with that crap coming out of your mouth”. I feel as though one can still become a doctor because you can always have a chance to become a doctor. There is a chance to become a doctor because if you try hard and show you know the work then what’s the big deal , one can also change their language when in interviews as well. Lastly you said and I quote “Five or six different children, same women eight, ten different husbands or whatever .” This quote goes back to stereo types; not all women have eight, ten different husbands. That is generalizing a group of people, I know minority women who don’t have multiple boyfriends or husbands or partners etc. To me you have multiple ideas that I disagree with. I believe that all can change and we always have a chance to change. I believe that with the right people and organizations, the organizations can help black women or minority women look better and less as they say “ghetto”. I also believe that organizations or you can show that the black community and minority’s community can become doctors and can fix their language. You can also give tell these important people that language is very necessary in work and interviews. I am glad that you brought the truth to the people and this makes a big change but I feel as though you were a tad stereotypical and somewhat blunt. I believe that one can be blunt but one has to understand that not everyone takes subjects the same way. I believe you are very funny and thank you for bringing about change in the black community. Sincerely, Alejandro Cordero

This assignment proved to be a very difficult one for me, for the very fact that I just don’t watch a lot of television at all. I don’t find much of anything at all that is entertaining to me. So many of the sit coms today have such a dysfunctional portrayal of families and I find that many of them down right degrade and show nothing but disrespect for the father’s especially. Nonetheless I chose to use “The Cosby Show” as my program of choice because it is one I used to watch when I did find time for television viewing and found it somewhat entertaining.…

I went the first day, so I don’t have a recording to look at. Even though I cannot see my speech I still realized some of my strengths and weaknesses. Some of my weaknesses consisted of: bad transition words, sounding shaky within the introduction, and time. My strengths consisted of: good movement, good tone, good statistics, and good eye contact. To start off my introduction I was very nervous, and I don’t know for sure, but I think the audience could tell. My transition into my first main point was not the best, but once I was in my first main point I was able to settle and really stroll through the rest of my speech. Within my speech I was able to incorporate many statistics to make my point why horse slaughter is needed although I am still…

The one sub-category of this section that I felt that Javier could’ve executed better was the appearance of being prepare. I’m not trying to say that he did know the material but when he’s presenting a speech in front of the audience and reading his out-line can really make the audience feel like he wasn’t prepare or intersected in the audience at all. After observing this, I decided to give a three in the sub-category of the section because maintaining eye contact with the audience as much as possible let’s the audience know that you appreciate their attend and therefore, keeps the audience interacting. What I recommend is to next time try to not use the out-line so much and only use it to keep you on track and to read off any direct quotes you may have. Try to have an ideal or mental picture in your head of how your out-line looks like so you kind of have memorizes your main points and can talk about them without reading your out-line word for word. Overall, Javier did a outstanding job with the rest of the sub-categories in this section like meeting all of the requirements of the assignment and adapting the speech to fit the audience.…

Every class day a layer of ignorance erased, eyes and minds which were closed are now open. The class of Global Studies demonstrates the quote I previously provided. Our teacher came with the idea to share the injustice of the world, all she had to do was think for a moment and at that moment the world improved. A student from Cleveland, Ohio giving a speech on racism and the effects of ignorance is improving the world, one moment at a time. The wonderful ability of our species is our ability to relate, to sympathize, we witness others pains and see it as our mission to never let a situation happen like that again. Jermaine Cole, an A-list celebrity, rapper, a man improving the world that he is living in. Cole raps about the struggles of the black community, he is giving the people with no voice a voice, letting them tell their stories to the deaf ears. My parents, Middle class, and unknown. Many know Bill Cosby from his success as an America comedian, actor, author, etc, but what he's best at is providing his many words of wisdom as an African America educator. Bill Cosby address to the National Association for Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) on the 50th anniversary of Brown vs. Board of Education goes down as one of the top speeches in America. His speech given at this ceremony was directed straight to the younger generation of the African-American community. He begins the speech with a statement he heard a prize fight manager say to his fellow who was losing badly, “David, listen to me. It's not what he's doing to you. It's what you're not doing.” This statement was a very significant feature in this speech because it centers around many things he mentions such as the school drop-out rates and juvenile delinquencies and young women and men disgracing themselves. All those things are what generates the speech as a whole. Cosby main reason and focus was how African-Americans were putting higher priorities on other things such as music, fashion and money other than education,…

    Summary: The New Jim Crow

I must say that I may have been completely wrong about the state of diversity in our country. I have worked in public service for literally my entire working life (30 years) and in public safety for all of it. I have worked in inner city areas and subsidized housing plans. But my opinion has been similar to that of most white Americans; that people of color do not want a hand up, they want a hand out. Not to be derogatory but that’s what I concluded based on what I experienced. That minorities, especially African-Americans, were using their race and situation to justify their poor choices. After reading The New Jim Crow, by Michelle…

We can only know this through self-examination” (p. 39). One must first determine what must be changed before being able to change it. We all have a duty to examine our belief structure and the behaviors of those around us. If we frequent a business that discriminates against African-Americans, we are indirectly racist. If we hold beliefs or attitudes that are racist, we have a duty to acknowledge and alter them. Reconciliation begins with personal responsibility, and we share this burden collectively.…

I believe that he has a point, but instead of talking about the issue as a whole and suggesting solutions, he is taking a few specific problems and taking it to extreme measures. There is also the matter of white poverty and black poverty. Crosby never mentioned the white people who live in poverty. Let’s face it; there is always something more that we could have done in a situation that we did not so we are all to be blamed for the situation we are in. These situations are identical; the only difference is their skin color. This means that these people should be blamed equally for the situations they are in.…

There is nothing wrong with encouragement when people are stereotyping the race/ethnicity one comes from. It is okay to be “Black and Proud” (Case 4). After all, “[The black community] has to convince [themselves] every single day that [they] are worth something and that [they] are valuable, because [they] are surrounded by systems and a society that constantly devalues and dehumanize [them]” (Davis 5). People of color should be able to love their race especially when they are trapped in a society that cares less about them, and more about keeping their privileges, as whites do. In addition, Davis articulates that, “not only are [people of color] still recovering from hundreds of years of brutalization against [their] ancestors, but [they] are still facing daily racialized trauma because of the ways those violent systems have continued to lock [blacks] out of the resources [they] need” (Davis 5). Still to this day, due to stereotypes, black people’s race and character continuously gets attacked even after all of their past sufferings. Black people can make an effort to advance, but still need encouragement from one another in the black community to get by. Though it is important to be pro-black in an Anti-black world, it has nothing to do with hating white…

Bill Cosby’s address at the NAACP on the 50th anniversary of the Brown v. Board of education was definitely a shock to the black community, as well as the nation. Bill Cosby was a comedian, and a figure that was looked up to in the black community, however this speech ruined his career and reputation. Bill Cosby’s speech split up the black community into two. One side strong believed in what Bill Cosby said and agrees with him, while the other side disagrees with him and despises him. This speech impacted the black community very much, and even ruined his reputation, however I believe that he said was true. Although, he expressed it in a cruel way that left you cringing in your seat, it is very much true and action should be taken.…

    Speech Critique

The first thing that I noticed in my introduction is that I need a better attention grabber. It was good, but there is definitely a better way to get the audience’s attention. The biggest thing in my speech that I noticed the most was the eye contact. I tend to look down at my notecards a lot. I review my speech over and over again before I give it, and almost memorize it, but it is my worst fear to speak in front of people so that is why I look down at my cards so much. Also, I have my cards too close to my face. The second thing that caught my attention while watching myself was that I need to have more gestures with my hands. Having a little bit more mobility with my hands will put more emphasis on the things that I am trying to say to the audience. The power point that I made was simple, but I feel like it got the points across and corresponded with my speech. I thought my tone throughout the speech was good. I feel like my tone of voice is very personable with the audience and not too soft or loud. Another thing that I thought I did well was pausing. I let my information sink in with the audience with a pause. I tend to use a lot of head movement when I’m speaking, and it is distracting to the audience. I used some humor in my speech by giving funny pictures and saying some things in my speech that made the audience laugh. I gave some time to let the humor set in with a pause and then proceeded to go on with my speech, so I thought that I used humor in my speech pretty well. My speech needs to be more conversational. When I watched myself speak, it seemed like I was reading it a little bit. With a more conversational way of speaking, you can attach yourself to the audience rather than reading your speech. Saying that, when I was speaking I was standing with good posture and speaking with a good tone. Even though I may have not been speaking conversationally, I think that my posture made up for it a…
