Dean Winchester: A Tragic Hero
Dean Winchester is one of the greatest modern examples of a tragic hero. He was born on January 24, 1979 in Lawrence, Kansas. He is the son of Mary Winchester, a young woman who comes from a long line of respected hunters(monster killers), and John Winchester. Dean's mother, was killed by a demon who was torturing Dean’s brother Sam. Mary’s death inspired Dean and his father to become the most deadly hunters on earth. They travel across the country, tracking down monsters and making sure no one has to suffer like they did. While hunting Dean’s father dies fighting the same demon who killed Mary and Sam steps up to take his place by his Dean’s side.
After the death of his father Dean’s reason for living shifted to protecting his little brother. Once his Dad died he reevaluated his life and determined that family was more important than anything, including himself. During battles Dean would jump in front of cars and take bullets to the chest if it meant Sam could stay alive. One day while hunting Sam suddenly disappears. Dean goes on a violent

Sam watches as Dean is dragged off to Hell by hellhounds and is unable to do anything about it. Since Dean died in the end he was unable to have a moment of peripeteia. He went out of his world guns blazing and barely had any time to look back and reflect. If he would have tried to fight his fate sooner he maybe could’ve lived to fight another day. But his obligation to protecting Sam eliminated all chances.
Dean Winchester is a tragic hero for many reasons. He was born to a “noble” lineage of successful and powerful hunters. He possessed a tragic flaw, which was his blind obligation to protecting his little brother Sammy. And he fought against his fate much like the classic grecian tragic heroes. Dean was a good man who was just trying to protect his brother. And in the end he made several bad decisions that caused his own

The climax hits when Lengel comes out and ruins Sammy’s possible moment to shine. However when one door closed Sammy opened another one and, well, quit. Not the prettiest resolve to Sammy’s big break, as he emerged, jobless, and unrecognized. “I could see Lengel in my place in the slot, checking the sheep through. His face was dark gray and his back stiff, as if he'd just had an injection of iron, and my stomach kind of fell as I felt how hard the world was going to be to me hereafter.” (p.19). Sammy has realized the weight of his actions, and doesn’t seem to feel too…

Silas Deane was a man of promise, he came from humble origins, but he rose to great heights. However, he did fall from respect, and lived out his life thought to be a traitor and a cheat. He died in an unusual manner, however. On the deck of the ship that would bring him back to America for the first time in over a decade, he fell extremely ill and died. Silas Deane was murdered by a certain Dr. Bancroft. This is not definite by any means, but it is the most probable cause of his death. The murder of Silas Deane protected Bancroft, and so shows the motive of the murderer, and his circumstances show his ability to perform the act.…

My theory on who I think killed Sam Westing is Sydell Pulaski .There are many people I think that could’ve possibly done this, but Sydell Pulaski is the one who I think was the most suspicious . The main reason I think she killed him is because she’s been trying to attract attention to herself from the time that she got there. I think the first moment I realized she wanted to be noticed and to have attention drawn to her was when she first was being introduced. When she arrived she immediately started complaining about her life and that she should be noticed more. Around pg. 15-16 she made a comment about how they would pay more attention to her. Another was when she took the shorthand notes? I think she did that to ask people want to come…

Fortunately, Sammy and the narrator realize their deficiency – infantility – after their conflict with other people just like the ancient Greek proverb says, "Through suffering comes wisdom" (qtd. in Vannatta 1637). In Sammy's case, "enraged that Lengel has humiliated the girls" (Uphaus 372), he quits his job trying to defend and impress the girls. However, the girls just ignore Sammy and leave the store. Sammy is then left alone. At the end when he look back into the store from outside, "[his] stomach kind of fell as [he] felt how hard the world was going to be to [him] hereafter" (Updike 20). There is a sense of regret when Sammy mentions the hardship in his life after the loss of job. As Donald J. Greiner points out, "Sammy does not want to quit his job" (398). If he choose not to quit, he doesn't have to face "the ugly world of harried housewives with varicose veins" (Greiner 398), nor he needs to suffer the loneliness – he gives up the last help from other people; from now on, he's all on his own. At the end, he finally understands, in his epiphany, that "it is responsible behavior, not playing ‘adult-like' games that will make him a true adult" (Quigley par. 11).…

“He needs help, Samuel said get him into the cabin, please help him. Matthew pulled him into the boat then helped Samuel’s mother onto the boat and into the cabin as well. Abner jumped in and Matthew pulled up the sail, which filled in the freshening breeze. He said to Samuel push off as you come aboard” (136) This proves that Matthew helped Samuel save his family because in the quote it says that Matthew helped him by getting his family onto the boat and in the cabin he is trying to save them from the British. Earlier Matthew had asked Samuel to hit a soldier with a rock and when Samuel did they got his father and brought him to the boat. “I thought I killed him! He raised the alarm. It matters not at all. We're away from the light. The torches won't cast out here. Besides their looking in all directions… It was a good fortune. Fortune's favor the well prepared. Matthew said” (137) by Matthew telling Samuel that the British won't find them Samuel feels a little safer and more secure trying to escape. Throughout the rescue of his parents and trying to escape the British Matthew gives Samuel hope and teaches him to keep…

Critic Northrop Frye once commented that "Tragic heroes are so much the highest points in their human landscapes" (Frye 1). Few characters illustrate this characteristic of a tragic hero better than that of Victors Frankenstein, the protagonist of Mary Shelley's Frankenstein. His story is one of a brilliant man whose revolutionary ideas brought suffering to himself, his family and friends, and his creation. Victor is an instrument as well as a victim to this suffering throughout his story.…
