I’ve recently moved to the north coast of NSW, after having been a city chick for most of my life. The north coast is a place of remarkable contrasts; I divide my time between Lismore, a largish inland rural city, with its fair share of conservative country folk, and the coast — specifically, hippy, happy, yuppie Byron Bay. If you’ve read Joanne Horniman’s Loving Athena, you’ll have an idea of this place.…

In Amber Bierce’s harrowing short story “Chickamauga,” the author portrays that war is not all honor and glory, but momentous and deathly through imagery. In a make-believe game of battle, a little boy ventured further than his normal grounds and “went forward toward the dark inclosing wood.” The writer uses the words “dark” and “inclosing” to make the reader feel more on edge, and assemble an ominous atmosphere. It hints that this boy is no longer playing a recreation for children. Later on, the child runs into damaged soldiers who’s “creeping figures” had been lit up by a “strange red light,” giving them “monstrous” shadows.…

The passage of writing being deconstructed is taken from Phillip Gwynne’s novel, “Deadly Unna?”, pages 226 to 228, beginning with “The cemetery was surrounded by an old iron fence,...” concluding with “ ‘Average,’ said Clarence.”. This passage from the book plays a vital role in the overall novel, as it shows the reader the life of Nunga’s, for the first time, and how they interact with each other and with Gary ‘Blacky’ Black, a Goonya and how the intimidation of the different race makes Blacky feel unwelcome. It is in this scene that Blacky realizes the unethical racism surrounding him and his lifestyle and how corrupt it has become. It is through Gwynne’s use of descriptive imagery that the reader can feel the emotion of the quiet, beachside cemetery and the peace of the ceremony. And through the first person narrative that the reader can feel the emotions and peace the surrounds Blacky when looking at Dumby Red. This passage provides a very significant view on the relationship between Gary ‘Blacky’ Black and the other Nungas.…

I believe that Andy’s father’s solution to punish his boys was good decision, but also a bad one. Yes, it was a little harsh, but the boys were at fault for their immaturity, without considering how it could affect the Duvitches. “We held a brief whispering conversation; and then, egged on by him and quite willing on my own, I played a shameful trick on the Duvitches, the memory of which will come back to the end of my days to plague.
