To say that 27-year-old Willis Earl Beal has lived a colourful life would be a serious understatement. The
Chicago native will tell you that his life has been one of "monotony" - which it has at times - but stints in the army, an ongoing desire to be a superhero, bouts of serious illness and a stretch of sleeping rough in an unfamiliar desert town wouldsuggest otherwise. As an outsider artist, Beal's career always existed just beyond his imagination, witha history of leaving homemade novels, artwork and CD-Rs across America to promote his work, suggesting a desperate desire to be heard. This practice of "gifting" - matched with a natural booming voice, rich with range and a talent for penning raw, beautiful melodies - led to early features in both Found and the Chicago Reader that changed his life's course. Beal's creativity caught the attention of
Hot Charity / XL Recordings who released Acousmatic Sorcery in March, 2012 - an 11 song set Beal wrote and recorded on a discarded karaoke machine while living in Albuquerque, NM.
Since the release of Acousmatic Sorcery, Willis Earl Beal has toured the world, performing in clubs and festivals with nothing more than his guitar and back-up tape machine to support him.Delivering soul baring performances night after night, Beal has been lauded for not only his vocal mastery but the intensity with which he performs. In the music industry, there have been many figures that have transformed the business, as we know it. Perhaps the most successful of these is Antonio ‘L.A.’ Reid. Antonio Reid has been best known for his determination to strive for success. He exhibits an array of skills both in his musical talents and managerial flair. Having been exposed to both the singer/songwriter, and behind-the-scenes work since his roots in the industry, Reid has without a doubt grasped the music business in its entirety in a way in which no other person has. Displaying musical skill in vocals, piano, and percussion (Net Industries, 2011. Para8) as well as his outstanding ability to manage and multitask, describing himself as an “overachiever”(Norment, 2003. Para 8.), Reid fits all the requirements for a successful career in the music industry. However what set’s him apart from the rest, is his infamous ability know talent when he see’s it. Despite being unable to describe exactly how he obtained such a skill in the industry, stating, “It’s something that I feel when I meet an artist”(Net Industries, 2011. Para10), it is without saying that he has proven his ability to recognise star-quality when he can see it. This is evident through his countless triumphs in his career, discovering successful artists such as Toni Braxton, TLC, Usher and Pink, just to name a few. (Net Industries, 2011. Para10&11) Reid’s unique sense of knowledge in the music industry, along with his other attributes, distinguishes him from others in the music industry, and has helped his success. His passion for all genres of music, having grasped the importance of musical diversity, has set him apart from others in his line of work. Not only is this something that I admire in Reid, but also it is something that I wish to apply to my own career in the entertainment industry, and hope to obtain enough experience and knowledge to strengthen a sense of understanding of what can be successful music. I…

He has songs for every moment. When I'm lovesick, I listen to Give me Love or Nina. When I want to sing, I'm a Mess is the perfect choice. When I just want to relax, The A Team and I See Fire create a cozy atmosphere. Besides accompanying me throughout my different moods, Ed is a complete musician. He sings, plays guitar, and composes both lyrics and melodies. This versatility is his feature I admire the most. He masters all steps of music creation and demonstrates his geniuses on his shows. It is amazing to watch him step into the stage only with his guitar and his beautiful voice. Ed’s simplicity contrasts with the current trend of excessively produced musicians. It reminds me that, sometimes, less is actually…

He was so engaging throughout the performance, which surprised me because he was alone on the stage with nothing other than the lighting effects and three songs. He made himself the most interesting thing on the stage and that is something that I would hope to do as well. I also really admire him for being able to stand on a stage in front of so many strangers and be so open and vulnerable. He was able to bare his soul to the audience, knowing full well that he may be judged for who he was. That is why his performance was so compelling and…
