There are many things to consider when setting up your survival kits. First size is probably the most important aspect to consider. If your day trip survival kit is so large that you do not carry it with you and it is left in the cab of your truck while you embark on your hunting trip it is worthless. However, if it is not adequate in dealing with common emergencies and covering the basic human needs than it is also ineffective. There are items in your kit that will not last an indefinite period of time. This can be anything from food, medication, etc. Therefore, you should use what is going to expire first, or what has been place in your kit first if it does not have an expiration date. Rotating of expendables in your kit is a great way to become familiar with the items of your kit. You should even mark the outside of the kit with a grease pen with the date of the first item that is going to expire. This allows you to check the date of your kit, quickly before each outing.
Last advice on preparing your day trip survival kit is to make it dummy proof. Water proof everything, actually double water proof your kit. I line my kit with a gallon zip lock bag, then place individual items in their own water proof bag as well. Important items are also lanyard to the kit to prevent loss. My flashlight, knife, whistle and match container are all lanyard to the kit to prevent them from falling out. Also, place bright colored tape on all items that are subdued or natural colored.
