Daughter Of Invention Analysis
Prompt 1 The mother and daughter connection throughout the short story, “Daughter of Invention,” is very caring and loving. The mother protects the daughter throughout the story from the father’s harsh words. For example, the mother states, “What is wrong with her speech?... That is no tone of voice, Eduardo (Alvarez 7). The mother believed that the daughter had put together an inspirational speech for school the next day. Furthermore, the father was furious. Readers can infer just by reading this quote that something bad was going to happen. Shortly after the mother and daughter get yelled at, the narrator states, “He snatched my speech out of my hands, held it before my panicked eyes, a vengeful… he tore my prize into shreds” (Alvarez 7).
