Data Migration
Data migration

• Data migration is the process of transferring data between storage types, formats, or computer systems. • Data migration is usually performed programmatically to achieve an automated migration, freeing up human resources from tedious tasks. • It is required when organizations or individuals change computer systems or upgrade to new systems. • To achieve an effective data migration procedure, data on the old system is mapped to the new system providing a design for data extraction and data loading. • The design relates old data formats to the new system's formats and requirements. Programmatic data migration may involve many phases but it minimally includes data extraction where data is read from the old system and data loading where data is written to the new system. • After loading into the new system, results are subjected to data verification to determine that data was accurately translated, is complete, and supports processes in the new system. • During verification, there may be a need for a parallel run of both systems to identify areas of disparity and forestall erroneous data loss. • Automated and manual data cleansing is commonly performed in migration to improve data quality, eliminate redundant or obsolete information, and match the requirements of the new system. • Data migration phases (design, extraction, cleansing, load, verification) for applications of moderate to high complexity are commonly repeated several times before the new system is activated.

Conversion is the process in which data is changed from the old system to the new system. This process must be planned by professional I.T. users in the library to change the old system to the new system whilst making miniature or no mistakes. Even though there are 4 types of conversion, in the Liverpool library system they use direct conversion every couple of months to ensure that the old data of customers that is not needed is removed. E.g. data of customers who have paid overdue books are no longer need but those who have not paid are still needed in the system and are copied to the new system. Even though this method of conversion is not very commonly used it is very effective in renewing the library’s system. This system works by setting a specific date in which a certain system which is the old system will stop then the new system will replace the old system after the information and data is completely copied and filtered. There is also a negative point to this method of conversion. If the new system is non operational and not running, the old system which is down cannot be used as a backup system, therefore the computer system in the library will be down until a newer system is used to replace the new non operational system.…

There is rarely an instance of business that you can encounter that does not involve the processing of data on information systems these days. Businesses and organizations use information systems in a majority of their functions, and as a result, are creating mass amounts of data. Because data is so crucial to business operations, it is being gathered, stored, and utilized in exponential amounts compared to the previous decade. These data stores can be extremely valuable, but can also be equally as expensive, creating both problems and opportunities for those data owners.…

format. Conversion of databases to XML file format, the databases like Ms-Access, Oracle and MS-SQL, MySQL connects in the network or the oracle in the personal computer can be connected for the generation of XML code. Let us consider, user runs a firm with three companies with different database’s respectively. User planned to mingle the entire database’s of the firm in to a single database. The user wants to migrate the entire database in to a single database. Migration of a database to another database is a huge process and a complex one. In such case our project can be used as we are converting the entire database into a XML file and then it is to a single database. By doing so, the conversion is been made easier and the native database also will remain unchanged. Only the authorized person is allowed to access the databases. The user is been prompted for username and password and then the user can be allowed to select the type of database. After selection, the user is been prompted for database name and then corresponding tables present in that database is been displayed from which the user can select the table which the user wants to convert. Before conversion, the user can view the table from that the user can check whether the correct table is been selected. The table is been converted and a message will be displayed to the user about the conversion. The converted file will be in the XML format and it is been previewed to the user in the database format after conversion. Here, the user can check whether all the fields in the table are converted. While converting the data’s in the tables, the tables present in the database remains unchanged and the fields from the tables retrieved are subjected for XML conversion.…
