As of January 2014, 74% of online adults were social media users. When social media began in the late 1970s with Bulletin Board System, a program designed to allow users to download files, games, and post messages to other users through telephone lines via a modem, not many were prepared for the effect it would have on the world 30 years later. As social media progressed through AOL (1990s), MySpace (2000s), and now onto Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter, social media has continued to become a larger part of more and more people’s lives. A role that is now so large that many argue social media has become more of a curse than a blessing, and has poisoned communication, in person and over the Internet. But, social media helps protection services and law enforcement, assists people trying to stay up to date with the news, and allows people to stay connected with current and past friends.…
“Americans aged 18-64 who use social networks say they spend an average of 3.2 hours per day doing so, according to new research released by Ipsos Open Thinking Exchange (OTX).” 3.2 hours is more than one may think. Social media does nothing but help people become “social”. Sure, any person can catch up on the latest drama, find out who just announced their pregnant, or wish their great great great grandma happy birthday, but in reality social media is a waste of time to everyone in the world. And the addiction is hard to overcome once a person has started. Almost 1,200 hours on a social networking website is a lot of time someone could be using more wisely yet no one seems to try to change this hair-raising…

Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, YouTube, MySpace are all social networking sites that the majority of today’s society have heard of and more than likely use on a daily basis. These sites can be useful tools for a plethora of information and do have added quality in the workplace. However, if employers and employees do not use these sites properly or more importantly understand the dangers of social networking there can be alarming consequences that could include loss of occupation, serious liability claims, or never acquire employment at all. Constant vigilance and reminders that social networking is not private must be in the forethought of all employees and employers with consideration to the workplace.…
However, teens are the main source of addiction and this can take up to 8 hours a day. They are spending too much time on social media because they are chatting with their friends and searching for unnecessary people which prevents them from studying. Hence, lowering their grades. Teens like to socialize with social media, instead of playing sports and getting exercise, which means that they are getting lazier and unhealthy. My personal opinion is to stop it before it escalates to become a huge pack of very lazy people. There is a great concern about these chats on the social media leading to negative self-esteem, leading depression and subsequently, even suicides amongst teens. Hence, the negative influence of social media amongst teens can be fatal and needs to be stopped.…
Did you know that 23 percent of Facebook users check their account 5 or more times daily? Facebook is just one of the many social networks used by people all over the globe. It has become a way to connect with people unlike ever before. Social Media has become such a big part of Society that it is expected of us to use at least one. But how beneficial is social media really? Statistics show that an ordinary person spends an average of 7 hours and 45 minutes on social networks during a period of one month Those hours could have been spent doing something productive such as exercising or reading a book. Time is precious and it should not be wasted on unnecessary activities. Although Social Media sites such as twitter and Facebook may be helpful, but they re far more harmful, because of the arising issue of cyber bullying across the web especially on social media and all the reoccurring cases of mistaken identity that have disrupted let alone ruin the lives of many people.…
Just when I was about to pick up my pen to finally start on my assignment, the Facebook chat buzzer went off yet again. It was Ivan, a friend I just met at the beach this afternoon playing beach volleyball. We chatted for about twenty minutes before he started asking me a series of personal questions and finally my sexual orientation. I was naïve then and didn’t know what sexual orientation meant, looking back I realized that Ivan was gay wanted to know if I was gay as well. My experience with Ivan made me realized that the Internet makes people less inhibited and more willing to say/do whatever they want. Without the platform of online chatting, Ivan, a shy guy would never have garnered the courage to ask me such personal questions. In recent times, the proliferation of social websites like Facebook has brought social networking to a new level, people have the ability to portray themselves in whichever way they wanted by having a Facebook profile. This trait can be seen in Katie Ellis’s article ‘Be who you want to be: The philosophy of Facebook and the construction of identity’, Katie writes, “I carve out an online identity based on how, and as whom, I want to be perceived in both the online and offline world.” The uprising of social networking websites has also resulted in a rise of cyber-bullying cases and it is fast becoming one of the most common crimes around. Technology without a doubt has enabled mankind to communicate with much greater ease; however, we must never let our guard down when we are online.…

Social Networking is a growing media that most of the population either uses or is at least aware of. In January 2010 incites had conducted an online survey with 2,884 consumers from over 14 countries, between the ages of 18-55. More than 90% had at least known of Social Networking and 72% have had at least one social networking site in their life (Raymond Tay). This means that if you were to stand in a room full of people and ask who has a Social Network page, most likely more than half the room would raise their hands. Some may believe that this is a harmless thing, because the media only focuses on the positives of Social Networking, although there are many negatives that can also change your mind on what Social Networking truly is.…
Firstly, one of the effects of addiction social network is it may lead students to wasting their free time. The reason of this situation happen is students may surf more social network for playing online games compare to use their free time for study. ‘Farmville’ and ‘I am Player’ are the example online games that are in trending in Facebook. The CBS News National correspondent, Hattie Kauffman reported that people who use the Internet excessively, defined as using for more than 30 or 40 hours a week the Internet to participate in SNSs, check emails and play online computer games are considered Internet addicts (CBS News, 2008).Other cause is that they considered stalking other people’s profile account for hours on end (Walker, n.d.). Stalking on other people’s profile account can make students while away to do a revision their lesson.
