Dangerous Toys for Our Children
As a mother, there is no greater concern than the safety of our children. Yet with the recent reports of lead in toys for kids, mothers and fathers alike now have a new worry. One of the world’s largest entrusted and respected toy companies has been criticized for producing toys with hazardous levels of lead paint. Some of the toys produced by Mattel also contain small magnets that pose as a choking hazard to children. The CEO of Mattel Inc. maintained that his company has scrupulous standards, policies, and procedures in place and apologized as the company was forced to recall millions of toys for the second time in two weeks. The recall affected about 9.5 million toys in the United States, and 11 million in foreign countries. It is the largest recall in recent months involving Chinese manufactured products which has come under scrutiny worldwide for containing potentially dangerous high levels of lead paint (CNN, 2007). It has been proven that high doses of lead can cause brain damage, mental retardation, behavior problems, anemia, and a wide variety of other serious damage to the body parts, and in extreme cases, even death. Mattel, the parent company of Fisher-Price, recalled 1.5 million toys marketed by Fisher-Price's preschool division on August 2. These toys were manufactured between May 2003 and November 2006. None of these toys produced after November 1, 2006 is affected. "We are concerned," Mattel Chief Executive Officer Bob Eckert told CNN.
