Dance Review
The performance, “Dance Matters” was absolutely amazing. Walking into the theater I wasn’t quite sure of what to expect and was really excited to see the show. I got even more excited seeing that this performance was directed by my professor. There were four parts in the performance. Also, each of them had its own story and full of meaning. I was surprised and learned from the performance. I appreciated to have a chance seeing this amazing show.
There was one part of the performance that attracted me a lot. When the curtain was rose, I saw dancers sitting on the chairs with their hands covering their faces expect the girl who was expressing herself. The voice was strong and full of passion which grabbed my full of attention. Through her strong beautiful voice, I felt her. She had so many stories to tell.
Moreover, the strong feeling was turned into the movements. All dancers started moving their bodies with energies. All of their extensions and turns and leaps were perfect and they were all in sync. I noticed one thing that we learned in class, they constantly kept their bodies flowing and moving. Every movement connected to another one. Everyone danced to their full potential, there was no lagging from the dancers.
I was very impressed and enjoy watching this performance. It was perfect that all the dancers were full of energies and every movement was perfectly presented. Generally, it was an amazing performance. Somehow, “Fragmented” was my favorite part in this

The intense dance between the two leads was so heartbreaking yet beautiful. The piece told the story of a man and a women who cared deeply, supporting each other yet now being good enough. The man and the women had dragging movements, carrying and dropping each other showing that they couldn’t survive. At the end, there was a spotlight on the women as she collapsed to the floor with the man standing over her and others gathering around. The male lead sprinkled rose petals over her body, making the story so powerful.…

I was very impressed with the acrobatics and choreography which showed great dedication on the company’s part. With my experience in Avenue Q, I know how much time and work it takes to even learn and perfect a simple dance, so I would really like to appreciate and recognize the dedication and hard work of the actors and choreography of the company. I think those elements must have been a big part of the director’s vision and that the director must…

Ballet “Cry” simply showed to us real life of all African women. Every single American people know what kind of life they went through. Therefore it touched their heard. Alvin Ailey’s “Cry” presented wonderfully combined movements, technique and emotion. Ms. Donna Wood uses tragic face, a mask of sorrow. It is a face born to cry, but when she smiles it is with an innocent radiance, joyfulness that simple and lovely. She never tries consciously to please an audience. He was not only concentrating in movements and physical performance, but also using flowing white gown with a long white scarf for the dancer. A long sleeve white blouse is slim, to show the dancers body. Especially her movement and technique. It made dance more interesting to audience. This beautiful piece of modern dance consists of three sections. Ms. Donna Wood performed solo dance for 16 minutes from section to section. Her ways through the dance are different in movement quality that she gives to each passage. In this tribute to black women, the free sprit or the African women comes through in the energy of her dancing.…

During “Waltz of the Flowers,” a part of The Nutcracker selection, the mood of rebirth and growth sept into the audience. The piece started very calmly with the dancers doing jumps about the stage. As the piece progressed, the jumps and leaps got grander and the movements became larger and more impressive, as the flowers “grew”. There were many long extended movements that slowly became faster and more impressive as the music grew louder. The dancers throughout the whole piece were smiling to show the growth of themselves, portraying a flower. For “Russian Dance”, another excerpt from The Nutcracker, the music started loud and intense, and the movements that the dancer did mirrored the music. The dancer, as the song continued, did many twirls and jumps which gave off the impression of a glorious win. Each of the movements were fast and sharp, with many high jumps added in. The dancer was once again smiling which showed the victorious dance to celebrate his victory.…

As the performance commences, an immense yellow sun captures the audience, whilst the rest of the stage remains unlit, revealing the silhouettes of the still dancers, together in the formation of a V shape. As the performance gradually unravels, the dancers rapidly shoot up directly into space, standing with straight arms reaching above their heads, whilst dust is thrown and released into the air. The bodies begin to move in a dramatic however sudden and sharp manner across the stage. They have separated into two groups dancing in opposition and are somewhat symmetrical to each other. Assembled again, the dancers perform direct and strong hand and arm gestures to assist them across the stage, whilst the continuity of what sounds like a ‘pulsating heartbeat’ flows in the background. The movement becomes in more intensity, angular and linear suggesting that this is a dramatic, contemporary/lyrical styled piece. We can potentially recognise a few of Laban’s effort actions throughout the performance, as there are several slashing, gliding and thrusting body…

This show was very different from what I am used to seeing. The music was so very different and so southing, it really showed this cultures storytelling and their history. The way they were dressed was very true to that culture and what they wear during their shows. Her movements are very intentional yet very peaceful, it is so different from what I’m used to and how in our theater we move so differently from this. The way the woman plays a heron and truly embraces the part of a graceful bird, it is so different in a beautiful way that thy can embrace such a different character.…

The first piece Slavic Dance was up beat and exciting and it brought the audience into the show. I heard the piece and thought to myself ok the show has now begun. I think it is a good idea no matter what kind of performance it is, the start should be exciting and welcoming. The second piece, Three Preludes, was very clam and relaxing to the ears. At some points the song did get louder but sill had a nice legato feel throughout. La puerta del vino, was the third piece and was even quieter than the last, it sounded like a mystery piece. When a song is quiet and soft it make the audience listen harder because you do not want to miss it. The fourth piece was another duet and was up beat and woke everyone up from the short "nap" of quiet and softness form the last two-piece. The next piece Lisle Joyous L. 106 was similar to the last piece but wasn't as quick moving. Souvenirs was the second to last piece and was not only great but was fun to watch because the way it is written the performance are constantly getting their hands mixed up. The last piece was almost the same as the opening song but just a different section from it. I really like it because it was fast, fun, and very articulate. It had a lot a repeats or similar phrases so after a while you felt as if you know the song and could hum along with it. Not only is it good to open on a quick,…

The sound of excitement was what I heard when I walked in. The sound of proud parents praising their children in the play, the sounds of students dreading their drama ISAs, the sounds of rushed footsteps, the sounds of the crowd settling down, the Sound of Music in its beginning. Last Wednesday, January 27th, 2016 I made my way to the City Playhouse to see my first CHAT school play, and I was looking forward to see what was in store for the audience that night! From the opening of the curtains to the final bows and thank yous of the cast, I was hooked on the convincing costumes, incredible acting, and extravagant sets. This made the audience more interested in the play since there was such a variety of costumes, and it created a whole other…

Moreover, I also enjoyed the dance which was amazing and energetic. People whatever their nationalities were all can feel the passion. With the drum beat, we could not help our selves to move our bodies. The bright, swirling dresses add to the spectacle, and elicit cries of encouragement from the spectators. Then performers and audiences chorused, the lyric was founded in the programs guide, it was easy to sing and catch.…

Another feature of the show that really made the show splendid, was the expressions on the dancers faces. Every performer knows that one of the biggest things that can either make or break a show is the expressions they make while performing on stage. The expressions on the performers’ faces while dancing really added to the mood of the scene. In the part of the show where the dancers were pretending to be horses, with the fast beat music, all the dancers had excited looks on their faces, which added to the scene rather than if they just had a straight face or perhaps a sad face. Like I said earlier, the expressions on the performers’ faces make an extremely big difference and these performers had great expressions which put the show over the top.…
