The best part of our success is when we won Disney’s My School Rock dance competition for two consecutive year. We also won many competition after Digi Live. The first performance of the show was entitled “One Dance” and performed by both Junior and Senior Company, which was something I have not seen before. In sync with the bollywood music --which changed from classical to romantic and hip hop songs-- the lighting was set to transition from orange to magenta and finally pink. Something that impressed me is how they used a part of their costume as…

First major Choreography “Jardi Tancat” which is Catalonian for “enclosed garden” by Nacho Duato performed in 1983 is based on Catalan folk tales. The work explores the hardship and sorrow of the Catalonian people as they struggle working in the barren, water stricken Catalonian land. Throughout Jardi Tancat you can see the presentation of contemporary dance, with a background of classical techniques; this is evident through the training accompanied. Throughout the performance you can see the influence of social, historical and cultural climate. Also the choreographer’s background, philosophical underpinnings, experience and intentions have an impact on the way the Nacho Duato’s piece came together.…

Back in summer of 2014 all of our friends were so excited for the new year. We were going to be in 8th grade, at the top of the food chain at our Junior High. Not only were we excited about all the different things we were going to be able to do as 8th grader, like take chinese or year round spanish if you're into that. But what we were focusing on the eye of the prize, the 8th grade dance. The best part about this dance was that it wasn’t any ordinary dance, everyone had to be dressed up in nice clothes or otherwise they would be asked to leave. This…

Ever since I was a little girl I dreamt about being on the Indianettes dance team. Dancing has been a part of my life from the age of four up until now. When I was younger I was not the best dancer but I loved it, and my mom already paid for my classes so i was kind of stuck doing it anyways. My eighth grade year I was preparing to tryout for the Indianettes, I was stretching, working on my technique, and working on my jumps and turns. It turns out that the old coach Sheri Bradley quit and the Indianettes had a new fairly inexperienced coach named MariAnn Barfus. I wasn't very confident about making the team. Long story short, I ended up making it along with Jaidyn Harris, Hannah Hyde, Daphnie Colpron, Carson Davis, Becca Osterhout, Mechelle…

Joining the lion dance team was a major turning point in my life. Through lion dancing, I was able to express myself without anyone knowing who I was. The lion head is a way for me to hide my identity, but my vehemence in dancing is from the motivation my family members’ criticism gave me, which made me want to do better. Because of the love and support I received from the lion dance team, I am more open-minded about the world. It allowed me to overcome my shyness and instilled me with the confidence and happiness I have…

As I went out onto the stage, the bright lights hurt my eyes. My hands were sweating and the music for our lyrical started to play. For this dance I felt free. I knew all the moves and they just flowed out of me as I continued to dance. I did not even think about the people in the crowd as I looked to the back of the auditorium. With every breath another second went by, and before I knew it I made my last move and left the stage. I thought “first dance down only two more to go,” as I quickly got ready for the next dance.…

    Dance, Girl, Dance

Dance, Girl, Dance is a film from the Classical Hollywood period that presents a complicated reading when viewed through a feminist lens. The 1940 film was directed by Dorothy Arzner, one of the most notable female directors and the only prominent woman in Hollywood at that time. Arzner presents her audience with an array of female characters, the main characters being Judy O’brien and Bubbles/Tiger Lily White. Judy is a dedicated dancer, honing her talents as a ballerina. Bubbles, on the other hand, uses her looks and sexuality to land jobs as a burlesque dancer. Dance, Girl, Dance reveals these characters’ experience in a dance troupe with several other girls. When the troupe disbands, Bubbles comes to offer Judy a humiliating job as her stooge. As tensions rise, the two eventually come to blows, quite literally, when both fall for the same man, Jimmy Harris. Through their relationship with each other and with men, a dynamic is defined that gives insight into the power of the male gaze and sexual politics, not only in the film but also in society at large in the context of 1930s America. This can be seen in the analysis of a particular scene near the beginning of the film. Judy and one of her roommates, Sally, are preparing for bed after their performance at the nightclub in the opening scene. Bubbles, their third roommate, arrives at home after a disappointing outing with Jimmy. This scene specifically highlights the contrast between the personalities of Judy and Bubbles, and speaks to the many ways female characters are coded based on their sexuality and appearance.…

Sure, we were being judged based on equipment and dance technique at competitions, but any judge could feel the sincerity of a guard that performed to their fullest ability. On the mat, my only goal was to connect and share exactly how I felt with the audience. My only goal was to give them a performance they would remember. And I wasn’t alone. My whole team was behind me, performing their hardest along side me, whispering things as we passed like “You got this,” “This is our best one yet,” and “Keep going.” All of my most treasured memories were made on that mat with the same group of girls, whether it was in a stunning performance or a grueling rehearsal. We knew everything about each other, how to make each other laugh, what each of our strengths were, how to tell what sort of mood we were in before we said a word, how to cheer each other up. I knew that the girls behind me weren’t just my team, but my family, my fallback, my network that would support me no matter what our score was at the end of the day.…

Ever since I was young I remember dance always being one of those things that was always there when I needed it. Everyday I looked forward to going to class and working hard, doing my best to get better everyday. I officially started dancing when I was three, however, it wasn’t until I got to the age of around 10 or 11. This was about a year after I moved to Kansas City and when I just started going to the Kansas City Ballet. The whole experience changed my point of view completely over not just dance but ballet to. I would definitely not be where I am today if it wasn’t for moving to KCB.…

    Character Building

You are who you are by what you’ve done and who you associate yourself with. Dance is how I express myself but also who I am. Through dancing I have learned many things about myself and learned many things from other people that helped build my character. Jete or Chaine are things I have learned in dance, but they can also represent other things I have gotten out of dance like determination and motivation. To me, dance has been the thing that has built my character the most. It is the most influential because I love it. When you dance, you mess up. You watch, you learn, but most importantly you learn to let your personality shine through. When people are made better dancers, they become better people vicariously. Your peers and role models set good examples that you want to follow so eventually one day you can fulfill their roles they had in your life. It’s imperative to me to build others up to pay forward what others have done for you and for the satisfaction of witnessing others prosper. The Pay It Forward concept works in wondrous ways. One person has the power to influence the whole world by chain reactions. Being around the most influential people in your life such as family or friends and leading by example motivates them to do the same. Building character isn’t just about getting people to follow what you do. It is also about helping people to become who they are and to make better decisions. If you help someone correct their wrong doings and guide them to make the right choices the next time around, you have given them initiative in their life. It’s not good enough just to go along with others, it’s just as important to make the decision on your own. And during your life you learn the basics and build up from them. You learn routine of life, the choreography, and formation. Once you have figured out what you have to do, it’s time to have others follow you so you can lead them in the direction of the dance…

The National Committee on Dance of the National Commission for Culture and the Arts under the leadership of Shirley Halili-Cruz has organized the Sayaw Pinoy: The NCCA National Dance Competition as part of its efforts to promote dance in its various forms – folkdance, ballet, modern/ contemporary, hip hop and ballroom. It aims to stress the importance of the competition as a means of motivation for artistic excellence but not an end to itself. It also hopes to teach emotional fitness through teamwork as the group experience will bring about dependability, responsibility, commitment, sportsmanship, discipline, creativity and awareness of the value of the art of dance. Consequently, acquiring the value of working together toward common goals will extend to daily undertakings beyond the competition.…
