What makes a great leader?

Definition of leadership

“The action of leading a group of people or an organization, or the ability to do this” (oxford dictionary) (or) the position or function of a leader, a person who guides or directs a group” (Dictionary.com)

What I think makes a great leader:

A great leader is someone who is determined, passionate towards their role as a leader. They are someone that others can look up to as a role model, inspiring others to take part or get involved in sports.

Communication is important as you have to try to explain things to people as you are met with a blank expression. Being able to clearly and succinctly describe what you have done is extremely important, if you can’t relate your vision to you team than you won’t all be working towards the same goal.

Confidence is important as the team not only see you as a leader but a role model. Assure everyone that setbacks are natural and the important thing is to focus on the larger goal. As the leader by staying calm and confident you will help keep the team feeling the same, the key objective is to keep everyone working and moving ahead.

The ability to inspire your team is great for focusing on the future goals however it’s even important at this moment forward. Recognize the work that everyone has committed and put all the effect into the team. Your job is to keep their spirits up and make sure that their work is appreciated.

An example of a great leader is: Muhammad Ali

Muhammad Ali is an example of a great leader because he is inspiring role model to the younger generation. He is considered one of the world’s greatest boxer and a three time world heavyweight champion; he holds a record of 56 wins to 5 losses.

He is extremely successful with his technique; he never believed that he could lose a fight; He was trained under various coaches as an amateur boxer and had an amazing record of 100 wins to 5 losses this then lead on to him winning gold in the summer

Preparing to lead a team When preparing to lead a team there is a lot to consider, ranging from your team members to policy and procedures. All teams are made of individuals, they are all unique in terms of their knowledge, skills and attitudes and the way they behave in different situations. As a leader, your role is to engage the collective energy of the group, but at the same time giving individuals in that team the focus and attention they need. Providing required resources and a safe environment at all times. Leading involves management and leadership, getting things done through or by other people. This is often where managers make their first mistake. ‘It’s quicker to do it myself’ is sometimes said or ‘The only way to make sure something is done correctly is to do it myself’. This is not what management is about. To be a good manager you have to set your team goals and objectives. Monitoring their progress but do not micro manage them. This will let your team learn through experience and grow confidence and a sense of responsibility. Supporting them where applicable by providing them advice, training and resources. This will help you train them up to be future mangers and free up time so you can focus on tasks that might require your personal attention.…

Am I a Leader? Leaders are charismatic, inspirational, and trustworthy. They have a vision. They are good communicators, good listeners, good problem solvers, etc., etc. Look up the word “leader” or “leadership” and you will find a list of traits or attributes that make someone a leader. I don’t argue that good leaders possess some of these characteristics and skills. But, that is not what actually makes someone a leader. You are a leader if someone else chooses to follow you. An effective leader needs to be a positive leader. A leader with a positive attitude is effective because they make a good atmosphere for others around them. I know that in dance, there is always that one person in your group that pumps everyone up. They always have a positive attitude, making others around them feel more positive and uplifted. They always tend to look on the bright side. Looking on the bright side is a very good thing that leaders with positive attitudes do. One time I was onstage doing a solo, and forgot everything and made up the whole dance. When I stepped off, I was very upset and negative towards myself, and my dancing. My mom told me how it still looked great, like I knew what I was doing. In the end, I got second place in my category. My mom showed that even though I blanked on stage, I still placed. She was looking on the bright side. Another reason that a positive leader is an effective leader, is because they have the ability to influence others thoughts and opinions. Everybody wants to be like them, meaning they influence others. My cousin is a great role model and leader to me, and I know that when I was younger I wanted to be like her so bad that everything she thought... I would think. Everything she said... I would say. A leader with a positive attitude makes a positive influence on others, leaving the people around them feeling inspired.…

Secondly, how is a leader going to lead without the confidence of always being the important decision maker and without the confidence that he will be backed up by his followers? Helen Keller once said, “Optimism is the faith that leads to achievement. Nothing can be done without hope and confidence.” If the followers of a leader realise that their leader lacks confidence, their trust in the leader will be significantly affected negatively. This is so as people would rather work with a leader who displays confidence, rather than a leader who is doubtful and…
